The New Road. It will bo observed
by an advertisement in thU liiue that the eonteit
for a new road, to avoid Lick Run hill, hai at lait
been settled, and the fluperrlsors now Invite pro
posals for building the tame. We are Informed
that the bill In question can be sealed at leu than
Ave degreei, which will certainly be a great Im
provement over the old route, which some say la
tifteeo at tome potutt.
Good Men. The Democrats of
Clinton oouuty have Mooted A. J. Quigley, Esq.,
for Senatorial, and O. O. Defoe, Esq., for Repre
sentative delegate, to the State convention, but
gave no instructions. We believe this county layi
no claim to the Senatorial delegate, and presume
that Mr. Quigley will prove very aotiepUble to the
Democracy of Clearfield, should he be the choice
of the district conference.
Sudden Death. Wo learn thai
George Moyer, long a resident of Uraham town
ship, died some ten days ago while sitting in his
sleigh, coming up the Allegheny mountain, this
side of Vnionvile. Two men who were with him
got out of the sleigh to walk up the mountain,
giving him the reins to drive, but soon found that
something was wrong, and before any aid could
be obtained he was dead.
Another Gone. On Thursday last
James Mot'trlland, one of the oldest eitticus of
this oouuty, died at Bellefonte, on Mi 77th birth
day. He had been living with his son-in-law,
Mr. Abraham Humphrey, just across the river
from this place, fur some time, and about ft week
previous to hii death bad gone to visit his sop.
Win. McClelland, at Bellefonte, where be died.
His remains were brought to this place ftud in
terred oo Fund ay last, followed by ft largo con
course. Judge McEnally. Tho enthtisias-
tic endorsement of this gentleman by the Radical
County Committee for Supreme Judge, Is a well
deserved compliment. He is about the ouly hon
est member of the party among the leaders In this
county, and Is entitled to this mark of respeo.
But when the same men endorse Grant, it fs evi
dent that some one la to be ruined or made a fool
of, and we ad rive our neighbor to look out for the
ambiguous conduct of the late Radical paw-wow
in tho Arbitration room.

Another Candidate. A now Rnd-
leal journal, styled the PilUinrg Time; bas made
its appearance. The paternity of the paper is
, attributed to our late townsmen, II. Bucher Bwope,
Esq., who has been employed by "the government"
to superintend the wbfoky, counterfeit and tobao
oo business in the We tern District. A copy of
the paper Is before us, and mechanically presents
ft splendid appearance, ftud must cost ft large sum
of money to keep it afloat. The name of the pub
lisher ftod proprietor is not given, while that of
J. Vannote appears as editor. It will take more
than van -nit 9 1 unless it Is a large one, to pay the
expenses of the coooern, ar we ftre very much
mistaken.
A Proper Law. A bill has passed
the lower house of the Legislature requiring all
costs to bo paid upon taking an appeal from a
Judgment entered by a Justice of the Peace. This
Is certainly ft wholesome law and gives the Jus
tices, Constables and witnesses the costs to which
they are entitled, Instead of to somebody else.
Thousands of dollars have been lost under the old
system. The following is the bill in question :
fiecTin 1. Be it enacted, oc That before any
Appeal shall hereafter be taken from the judgment
of ft justice of the peace, the party appellant, his
ageut or attorney, shall make oath or affirmation
before the justice that it is not for the purpose of
delay such appeal is entered, but because he firm
ly believes Injustice has been done, and that the
iustiee shall enter said oath or affirmation upon
lis docket: Provided, That whenever the appel
lant makes an affidavit that he is uno4le to psy
tbe costs, be shall be allowed to appeal without
paying eosts : And providfd further, That the pro
visions of this bill shall not apply to the city of
Philadelphia,

W respectfully call the attention of Assessors
to this table, bcoans each of them has a enpy of
the duplicate la bis possession, embracing tbe
tame fonts, .0 far as tbe seated lands are concern
ed. If tbey will take the trouble to past orer
them and disoorer any mistakes In our table, we
will be obliged to them If they will call our atten
tion to the fact.
The first column In the table shows the number
of acres of land oa the seated list in each borough
and township ; the second, the namber of acres on
the unseated list, and the third oolumo gives the
wbolo number of acres returned by tbe Assessors,
while the fourth eulumn fives the aggregate value
in each township.
After excluding tbe boroughs it will be observed
that the AV&nAun ralue per acre for tb whole
eounty Is 99. Bloom and Urahain townships are
the lowest, ($7), and Brady ($11.30) and Lawrenoe
($11.70) the highest.
Tbe 609,403 acre being as.esi.ed at $2,207,840
makes the average about $0. This being estab
lished, tho next thing to dwell upon Is, l this
tb real value of improved land in the oounty t
If not, what If tbe true value 7 And another very
material point to settle is, should tome of the
townshipf which fall below tb. average be higher,
and tomo of tbot e above be lower F lfyea,wbieh7
Attention. Wo ori authorized to
state that th County Commissioners will .be In
session th week before Court, so u to enable
those in and adjacent to the eounty seat, who have
any business to lay before tbe board, to do so at
once, and not wait until eonrt week, when those
from g distance should be waited upon. It Is too
much the praotico of thus indicated to prett their
business when the office is filled by citixens re
siding twenty or thirty milet distant. A week
liefor Court if therefore dedicated tothedotnestie
business portion of the plao.
