Oatubar 21. 1K71. f
Mu. it i tor i This county is on tho south side
of the State, bounded on ths north by tbo Jaraos
Uiver and on the south by the Appomattox, Its
entire) length, and Is severed Into three nearly
equal parts by Slate and Willis' River and tholr
tributaries, so that It It well watered. All north
of Willis' River is flue for wheat and grass, and
on the south side is more sandy and better adapt
ed to tobacco, orn, oats, Jko., and tbo white pine,
fruits of all kinds and the smaller vegetables.
The South Side Ball Road skirts its entire south
trn border, from nro to scvon miles off, and tho
James Biver and Kanawha Canal are on Us north
ern border. There is a charter fur a railroad from
Richmond, the oapital, to Lynchburg, and the
route was surveyed, passing through the heart of
the oounty, very near this plaoe. When that Is
constructed, It will add Immensely to the value of
tho lands and timber and all other productions
along its line.
We have a common school system, similar to
that of Pennsylvania, now In operation. Our
courts of Justice and churches are all In full oper
ation, (lood order and sobriety prevail In tho
whole oouuty, and an earnest and sincere welcome
is extended to every good and true man and wo
man who comes in our midst to sojourn and find a
home. Ws need population and all we oan got.
Quite a number of English, Scotch and Northern
gentlemen are purchasing lands and locating In
our midst.
Many tracts of land are for sale, and on easy
terms. Indeed, one coming hero can always bo
suited, either by purchase, lease or rent,si b may
prefer. I know of no field bettor for speculation,
even, than Investment in lands here. Any Judi
cious gentleman can buy land now at a prioo which
is about one-half Its actual value, but an influx of
population will carry the price up In a low, years.
Some persons from your town hare sottled here
and are doing well and have most pleasant sur
roundings, and ws would be pleased to have more
of them.
I have just attended a large gathoring of two
or three thousand people, in the next oounty, for
laying the oorncr stone for a handsome court
house, and not the slightest disorder occurred
amongst any of the people. Farinvillo Is a flour
ishing market town, on the railroad, twolve miles
from this place, and on Appomattox River.
Very respectfully,
