Hiw Wasmaovon, Sept 11th) 1871, Ml. Eniroi After a hug .ilenea t once more stumble Into the corresponding si rale. The nasoi for my Ilenea was because, then was aothlng to write about, and I had other objects In view which occupied all my span moments, But while I pe- rusa year ooiuinns I see that ether place, an darning with the eorreipondlng lira, and It gives me a strong Inclination to try and aay something in behalf of Ihi.-part of the county. As we lead out very strong when It oomes to polling votes for some good l)cinocratla oandidate, who Is eoeking an orooe through the honor of the party, we should ot stand hidden In the dark, while our sister vil lages ara sounding their trumpets through the col umns of your paper) but we should he heard from a more able writer. There Is not much to writo about at present, but I might mention some of the entertainments givei In this place. We were entertained for three successive evenings by Prof. O, W. Bale, who lectured, or tried to lecture, on the aoienoa of Phrenology. He also treated extensively the soience of Magnetism. On the last evoniug I witnessed something Cokscerol with magnetism which I think was a sura remedy for tbe blues. As no one felt disposed to be hurled into Broadway, New York, or to the top nf the Hooky Mountains, in a moment, bo oandidate pre sented himself to ha operated npon. But In one dienoa to his request some of the young gents tried the operation on the Prof., which nsulted la a grand sell for the boys and a hearty laugh for the audience. A puhlio school examination was held in the town hall on the Tib instant, which was well attended by spectators, and tba County Super intendent was also present. The day .aeomed to be one of interest to all. The candidates defined and answered very promptly all questions given them, and to tha satisfaction of him who was present to Judge wherein they failed or oome short of fulfilling his law. The business men hen hare all got logging "on the brain." Messrs. S. M. 4 W. M. have pur. chased a large timber tract at the mouth of Chest creek and are operating very heavily at present. I Judgo from tbe present Indications that for the Doc. the ooming season must look favorable, a. bi. attention is all in that direction. The eampmcot- lqg held on the river, in Bell township, about six miles from this place, notwithstanding the rain and the bad weather during il. progress, wss well attended, and I learn was a sucoe... The aooum modaliour were good and tha people were made oonifortablo. Two stages were run daily from this place by that little gentleman called 0. W. D., who la keeping a livery stable in this place and is always prepared to accommodate whoever may wish to take a pleasure ride, with a very floe horse and buggy. Our Kcwburg friends had a picnic on Saturday lust. I was not prcseut, but lenrn they had a very pleasant time. They had differ ent means of enjoyment, so that nobody was con fined to one tbing alone. A platform was ereoted in a grove near town, when those who loved to engage in a hop "on the light fantastic toe1 wen accommodated. They ara also to be favored soon with an Indian show. Whether our friends will appreciate a show as feelingly as they do a ball, I am anable to say. Well, I have said enough for this time, so I will hid yon adlen. GOSSIP, LETTER NO. 2. Roughs oa a Asmeege Letter from the Sect ef War. New Wasiinvox, Sept. 12th, 1871, Ma. Editoi: Then is a society In this part of tha county, which, for eoovenlenoc, call tbe "plc nicers." They an a peaoe-loving, inoffensive and unassuming people, who wish to pass qnietly along time's rugged pathway, enjoying life as best they oan, and allowing othen to do tha asms with out let or hindrance. On Saturday last, for the purpose of whiiing away an idle hour and forget ting, if possible, all financial and othor troubles, these people repaired to a shady nook on the bank, of Wilson's Run, wben the youngten had raised a ptatform, refreshment stands, Ac. Early in tha day spruce young men and bright eyed maidens wen whirling in the "mssy dance," discarding all thought of can or feelings of malice thinking of nothing hut tha enjoyment of the moment when the startling announcement was uiaue tnai a oend of Konghs were ooming down on them. Gen. Mike saw tha situation In a moment, and began immediately to gel his forces in position. In a very short time he had his men in line of battle, well disposed, his right nstingon the plat form and his left on the run, a good natnral posi tion, not easily flanked. The enemy In the mean time wen preparing to attack. Tbey had formed their line, the right roiling on Fort Granger and their left on the Lumber City road, a few yards west of the bridge across Wilsoo's ran. Sooi the nnmistakable aaands of war ware heard, apparant ly emanating from the the rear of Felt well's potato patch, and a volley of oaths and obscene language reached the ear. of the ladiea and gents at the pisiform. Immediately after, Hasken's (Rough) Battery poured a galling fin into tbe Pionicers, directed principally against Shook'a Battery, whieh stood firm withoutreturnlngthcfire. Clark's and Hasken's Batteries, (hoik of the Roughs) by Soros mistake It is supposed, became engaged with each other, and amid lha confusion consequent upon this Utile escapade, Keating's New Washing ton Battery, by a well directed fire, silenced Has. ksn'a Battery and caused him to retreat in disor der. Clark, seeing the rente of Hasken, turned toil and fled, thinking doubtless with the poet, that ''Ho who fights and runs away May livl to fight another day." A Utile later, and CoL Ramey, with bis Infantry, charged on the Roughs' left center, but after giving and receiving soms bard knocks was compelled to retreat with slight loss. Thus matters stood for some time, when CoL MuMasters brigads made a fearful onslaught oa the Rough's oenter, when Col. Michael's brigade was posted, routing him completely and forcing hflai back across the stream. In this action Bildad was badly wounded and put In his "little bod." Tbe Pionicers were now master, af the situation. Dancing was resumed and all went "merry as a marriage bell," until midnight, when tho party dispersed, it being oomposed of conscientious and law abiding citiiena. The ladiea Ood bless thsm stood firm through this trying ordeal, and wen as valiant as their Trogaa slstsrs of oldsn time. Yonre, bravely, ICONOMY. Special t.
