Grant is not the ono to head a minori
ty in an attempt at revolution, lie

with fine sensibilities ; and many of
his ads which liavo outraged public
opinion from their disregard of tho
f;onernlly accepted rules of decorum,
lave proceeded not so much from a
wanton defiance of popular sontiment,
as from an inenpacity to understand
that tlioro is tin impropriety in his
using tho opportunities of his high
ofUuo to advance in every possible
manner bis individual intercuts and
thoso of persons whom, from ties of
consanguinity or tho dictates ot per
sonal Iricndsliip, he feels disposed to
provide for at the public cxpeso.
"So far as Congress will asnist him,
Grant will use every advantngo in his'
power to maintain his present posi
tion ; but there is no danger that ho
will ever raise the standard of rebel
lion against tho lawfully expressed
will of tho luition. Keen if ho should
attempt so preposterous an act, it
would amount to nothing. In such a
caso tho majority of the ofllcers and
men of tho army would show little
hesitation in hunging Gen. Grant on

Governor of that State, as it is evident
from tho impeachment and deposition
of the Into Gov. Butler that tho pooplo
thoro don't know what is for their own
good. It is very evident that a State
which removes its chief magistrate for
receiving presents in roturn for oflieial
favors is not worthy to bo trusted
with tho selection of its own officials,
and tho President is quite consihtout
in practically reducing it to a territo
rial condition by appointing its Gov
ernor himself. Hut it seems strange
that Grant should have overlooked
tho claims of liutler to nnothr term.
Probably tho President is not aware
of tho fact that although this adroit
financier has forfeited his office, he has
not been declared incapable of holding
any ofliciul position in tho future, us
is usually tho caso under such circum
stances. It would bo sad to bclicvo
tho President guilty of ingratitude to
so distinguished a follower."
