Fires. Jcrncy Slioro Ijnd a $40,000

scale, destroying among other buildings llaupl'a

for one every night. Clearfield, through good
luck, escapes the fire fiend wonderfully, whilo our
neighbors are being scorched every few weeks,

Lamp Explosion. A few oroningn
ago a coal oil lamp exploded at the public house
of Mr. Louis Pchradc, located on East Third Bt.,
Willinmsport, near the furnace, setting fire to the
tablecloth. It was fortunately extinguished be
fore any further damn go was done. The explosion
was caused by the oil in the lamp having burned
too low, causing gns to generate. Housekeepers
should bo careful to keep their lamps well supplied
with oil.

Fiue. On Sunday night a disastrous
fire occurred in WillimnsporL The fire broke out
in Eagle's stable, in the alley in the rear of Cap
tain Else's hotel, In that city, and, a high wind
prevailing, forty-six buildings were destroyed be
fore the flames eould be extinguished. Among
the structures burned are Doeblcr's hall. Ferris'
brick row, the residence of ex-dovernor Packer,
William Vandcrbilt's One dwelling and the Meth
odic church. The latter building was Just com
pleted th bell having been put In its place last
Saturday. The loss will roach l2;,n00, with an
inviranco of about $7i,000. The fire is supposed
to have be?n the work of an incendiary.
Awful. Wo notice by tho AHoona
Sun that a coal oil lamp and gross ignorance done
the usual work. A Mrs. Baker, residing near that
city, "forgot" to fill her lamp before dark, and at
tempted to do so after bor husband had retired to
bed. Hearing some noise, be ran down stairs, and
found his wifo enveloped inflames. In trying to
save her, ho also became enveloped in flames, and,
together with his wife's sister, who it appears was
in the room when the lamp exploded but ran Into
the hack yard, perished before help came to hand,
although the house was saved from destruction by
the aoighhors. Whrn will people learn ft little
common sen so In reference to this lamp and oil
business?
