Tub Piumauy Election Question.
We last week gave our vtewa upon tho contem
plated change of our system of making nomina
tions lu this county. Thla has involved us in a
number of orltlcfoins anl question, which wc
shall answer In tho bert manner poftiblo. To
thoso who, like ourself, favor tho present or
"Crawford Ryem," We need not reply at this
time, but will prooeod to answer tho ful!uvin; ob
jections made aninat the system now in force:
lt "I would liko to sen a change, so as to gire
the sinnll districts a fair rcpn dentation. There it
a growing fee! lug of diumtufnclion in those dis
tricts oniuit the present system."
This may be true, but what is tho remedy
Hum 11 districts, under a Petnorratie system of
government, can never bo as potent as large or
populous oIm s, Tho Pilrgale or any other Sys
tem could never cure these complaints. Demo
crats never ak a small man to carry as big a load
as a large able bodied one, nor should it be aked
if tho object Is equity and justice.
?d. " I have met a number of Di'tnocrats who
are anxious to koow m Iml vhaitgo is can temp Jatcd."
So far as we understand it, wo believe the Coun
ty Committee design to submit the prcaent and
tMeguto System to a vote at the approaching
Primary E!cotlun. The i'hairtnnn of the Com
mittee having been absent for toiue timo wc huve
not been able to learn deflnitrly In what way the
question will be put, but presume that tickvts nil)
bo printed, labelled on the outeide " Primary
Klection " and on the inside u Cruwfuid Fystem,"
on some, while en others " Di legate Hysttm,' or
something of this kind.
3d. "I think the present system is becoming a
little rotten and ourrupt."
This may be true, but the system Is not at fault.
The general corruption of the age has produced
thia result, and to our mind a change of tYitcui
will not euro the evils indicated. . I
4th. " The elcctioo is seldom held iu accordance
with I he rules. In many canes minors and He
publienns arc allowed to vote, and to luuie extent
control the result."
This is no doubt too true, and wo arc sorry to
know that oar rules are often violated, but would
the rules uuder the Delegate Pystcm be observed
any better? Why, if half is true that Ir said
about the violations of tho election laws in our
largo cities, while men are under oath, we nvgbt
with equal propriety ask to hare the election laws
repealed in order to prevent $otne men from com
mitting fraud and perjury ; but wo must Inkc the
good with tho evil and do the best wo can.
6th. "The present system la too aristocratic.
It is almost iinpoifihle for a man of modirale
means to obtain a nomination for office. 1'nli-s
ho spends a thousand dollars he cannot get it.
W hy, it costs a man as much under our present
system to get a nomination rs Orant charges for
au appnintmuit, lhnvc uuncf uiudt rate uieuns
necfl r.V.'
Tucro ii more I;-'" poetry in Uiu ubjte-
th.n. But we -ankrsitaj.:1 tnj it would cost
more money under tho uJn'e ttm' XvW
wo do not with to eonrey the idea tlntt eiibcr
the systems are of a corrupting nature, but 1
affirm that the past ten years have corrupted eve
ry avenue In church, state ard social life. And
how can it bo otherwise, whrn from ll.c !t sideut
of this great na'ijn down t the lowest official
position, even to tho selling of boys as ca lets,
every position in the State is obtained by money ?
And while the ruling psirty of this country con
tinues to foster and breed corruption by the whole
sale, it Is useless to seek tor a remedy through a
change of our Primary Election rub s. Tho dis
ease is located at Washington, and until our rulers
show a me respect for law and rules it will be u.e
Icsa for municipalities to begin to reform. If the
parent is vicious, tho oT.'prlnj ii very likely to
fall a piey Iu similar bat-its.
