ill be found a bill now before tbe Legislators,
which, although it docs not expreee it, is an at
tempt to stop the floating oflogs in Chest Creek
end the river above Curwenst ille. It ia a bold
attempt by Legislative enactment to break up, or
ioterfere with a legitimate branch of trade in
which many of our eitirens are interested. If it
is right to lost logs in Clearfield Creek and tha
river from the mouth of Anderion'a Creek down,
ft it also right to do so In tbe other streams and
above tbe Crrsk. It Is simply an entrage te at
tempt te prohibit by legislation any lawful calling
or commercial pursuits well established end car
ried ea in and over the puhlin highways of this
Commonwealth. Our free trade notions compel
s te ak our legislators to defeat the bill in ques
tion, Ne man or set ef men have a right te ira
eee apecial peine and penalties upon their neigh
bors for engaging In lawful trade. This bill, if
passed, would only lead to litigation and never
atop the floating of a log, because it is toe vague
and Inexpressive. It defines nothing hut its sen
loakeishnesa, and for this alone should be kicked
ut of the legislature.
TTe Mlht Dkclink. We liavo tho
past week teeeived fur publication a number of
communications and memorials, numerously sign
ed, proposing or celling oat Mr. John Lawshe, ef
Osceola, for Assembly. The communication from
Osceola has sixty -one names atuu-hl, one from
WooJward with fifty-eight names and another from
Deeatnr with twenty-one aamea. All setting forth i
Abe good qualities, peculiar fitness, and unirapeaeh- j
able democracy of Mr. Lawshe, whom they re
eommrnl as a suitable candidate for Assembly,
all of which we coneeda, but having in eur mind's
eye the Interest of the party rather than that of
any individual, we must decline publishing these
memorials for various reasons, chief among tbem,
because we bare no precedent for anything of the
kind, and if we allow candidate to be brought
before the public in this manner mil will claim tbe
same privilege, and we would finally lose the
oontrul of our paper, without an equivalent to tbe
party or ourselves.
The setting np of hundreds of proper names
an be done in a city office, where ewn eases are
pteoty, bat one-horse coo a try printing olleeeean
not ereu borrow the necessary material. Besides,
compositor, devil and all would swear for a week
about setting up matter of this kind.
Bound morals, tbe interest of tbe party, and our
defy towards eur readers, all pro tent against pub
lishing any and ell communications ol this kind
Tne claims of candidates, or of particular sertions,
aeeeteae te rA primary election, must be brought
before tbe puilie in sum ether wey than through
the Rifimhhtan, while we control e columns.
Tms tbe intereat of the party demands, although
It ie against ours when considered financially enty.

moved from Chester county to Clearfield when the
writer of this article was a rcry little boy. We
remember the circumstance quite distinctly, as
Mr. P pack man always put up at the private resi
dence of our father, and we beard him then say,
that in making the journey on foot between tbe
two places over the Allegheny mountains he
bad walked eiVy " eaeb day. lie was a good
man, the honored head ef a very largo and highly
respectable family, who are left to revere his mem
ory, end he has, like a sheaf, fully ripe for the
harvest, been gathered home to the garden of the
Lord, where faith ia lost In sight and hope in full

We Rather Enjoy It. Although
opposed to mobs and street brawls, we occasion
ally like to sea one gotten up en a small scale, fur
the purpose of giving Constable MuClellan a lit

eral occasions lately demonstrated to our mind tbe
fact that he Is the right man in the right plaee,

Another Fire Our citizens were

April Weather. The pat few

weather as bards could rhyuie on or painters de

brilliancy and power belonging rather to June than
tbe prewot nionlb. bringing the resources or nature
more visibly before we, causing the ouda to swell,
the herbage to grow and the songsters to make
notes of fledneae and welcome. Itot withstanding
all this, aomelhitig else has been done to make tbe
hearts of all overflow with gladness. Messrs.
