present snbmsrgod eondition, jet, when fronted
by its bits, things beeome more so. The idea that
onr borough authorities tolerate a nuisance of this
kind If indeed surprising at this age of refinement
sod progress. We deem e.bint sufficient to the
present intelligent borough suthorities.
NfW Postoffice. During the past
week Mr. Oaulin aud Air. Win. Heed hare pur

httwecm Second and Third streets, where we under
Hand they intend to ercat two brick store rooms,
three swrics high, in which a room will be pre

needed. This is the right kind of enlerpriir, and
we hope our yoong fi iendi will meet with "success''
io their undertaking.
Should be Changed. Much com
plaint la made, and justlr, too, by Supervisors,
Township Auditors and Overseers of the Poor in
this county, to the effect that their wags bare
nerar been raised above tho old one dollar per
day. If a man nevaratks for anything be seldom
gets much. Bo If those officers never petition the
Legislature to raise their wages, it is hardly prub
able that they will raise them.
Biuce writing the foregoing, wc learn that pe
titions are being circulated in Mg'i, Decatur and
DmJi'ord, aiking the Legislature to raise the
wigcs of those officers to two dollars pur day.
Tail is a step la the right direction and If the
petitions are for war led to Senator WslUee the
prayer of the petitioners will be heard.
Educational. It seems Hint Prof.

for the improvement of the school in another di
recti on, and has succeeded in securing the servi
ce! of an additional teacher, of mora than ordinary
attainments, both as to education and eiperienca.

A Little Mixkd Many of the
tax payers manifest eoneideraHe excitement over
the hut that the Couoty Commissioners, in equal
izing the isnessment, have been compelled to
raise tbo property In a large portion of the town
ships. Tir.1 a farm or l o-ite aud lot, which wis
valued last yrar at $'00, now is raised to JlOCf,
This alarms there, suppoiing that the mills are
the same as lnt year. In this they are mistaken.
The Iiuurd, instead of imposing 15 mils as last
yrar, now only ae.i 7 mills. We will illustrate
the modo indicated thus : Ln&t year Air. Smith's
farm was ase.nd at $ j00 ; his County and
IJjunty tax was f7.it. This year his farm is as
sessed at $1,000, and his tax Is (7 fifty cents
less than last year. Nw, will any well disposed
citisen just point out where the alarm comes In ?
Besides, is not Mr. Smith's property placed at a
respectable value, and the virtue of the assesrors
oath aud the credit of both owner and assessor

Fatal Accident. Whilo Messrs.
E. B. Baker and John StetTy were engaged in
rolling logs from a pile at Cherry Tree, on Tues
day last, one of the logs came down and struck
the latter gentleman, breaking his left leg io three
places between the ankle aud knee, and holding
him fast in poiition. Almost immediately anoth
er log became detached from (he pile and it too
came down upon Air StetTy, striking and shatter
ing bis other kg in a schocking manner, and this
completing tho work of death, or rather injuring
him so torrible that he died the same night. The
deceased, who bore an excellent reputation, was
ot above 25 years of ago, and had been married
but a short time. II ii companion, Air. Baker, for
whom be was working, made his escape by jump
ing into the river. Cambria Frttman.

New Firm. An ndverliscmoiit in

his brother Uobert, and the business title will
hereafter be Rrod Brothers. They are now re
ceiving a large stock of new aud fasbiooalle g ods
in their line.
Bather Prf.matcre. A portion of
tbo Court, iucluding some sgriotil'ural attorneys
from over the mountain, and o'hers, arrived in
town on Alonday for the purpose of holding Court.
But, as tho Act of Assembly had Gxed next week
as the time, the parties a ljourued to meet at that
period.
To the Trade. I desire to cull the
attention of the trade to my stork of lake fh,
having, for the past thirteen roars, male this
branch of business a ipecielty. Aly stock, at this
time, is the largest ever held In this city. I am
prujiartd to lurniih dealers, promptly, by the
dray or car load, and have made arrangements fr
shipping by the oar load, at special rales, from
Detroit, Handusky, Huron, Veriuiihon or Cleve
land, and a'so from Pittsburgh to any points in
Pennivlrnuia or Ohio, ae shippers may wish. 1
would alio call the attention oi dealer to my ex
