orable practice among the boys. The
poet says:
"Ttiea linking hit spurs with ft terrible oath,
He dashed down the line 'mid ft itoru af busaae."
What line? The line formed by
Wright of course., boforo this groat
rider arrived. Tho poem would lead
us to beliove that the presence of
Sheridan was alone the cause of Early's
defeat. This may answer for the ad
mirers of "Phil." but will not do as a
truthful ultuianoe of history.
At this late day it is not necessary
to recount the ufluir at Cudur Creek,
in which Sheridan becamo so fumous.
Jt will suffice to say that the Confed
erates under Kurly dashed upon the
loft wing of the Federal army and
drove them in wild confuniori from the
field, leaving their camp and camp
equipages in tho bands of the rebels,
With the rest of his forco Early cross
ed tho creek in his enemy's front,
pushed on to the field attacking in
front and flank the wholo army of
Sheridan gave way. Thus Early bad
an easy victory In his grasp, the Fed
eral lines were driven, their artillery
nil captured or had rushed to the rear
in hopeless disorder, the infuntry was
stampeded, tho cavalry was galloping
from the field.
This was tho spectacle that groctcd
the eyes of tho Confederates nt Cedar
Creek, on the morning of the 10th of
October, 1801. Unfortunately for
them tho camp was rich in luxuries
and Bpoils of every description, which
they paused to scir.o upon instend of
pursuing tho retreating oncmy; tho
men went to drinking riotiong and
ransacking whatever tho flying Fed
erals had left.
This conduct on the part of the
Confederates was unsoldiory, but
when we pauso and reflect that tlioir
army needed clothing, shoos, blan
kots, quartermaster's stores, and in
short every thing to cat, drink, and
wear, we can easily overlook this, for
it is very bard to shiver at night
for want of a blanket, to leave blood
marks on tho turnpike with naked
fcot, to be cold, starving in rags nnd
not granp at clothes, blankets and
food, hut this brought the punishment
The delay caused by this disorder gave
tho Federals time to reform their lines
and take positions; this they speedily
did under General Wright, command
ing tho Sixth Corps, for Sheridan was
at Winchester. Before Early could go
forward the Federal forces were not
only ready ro resist his further ad
vance, but were prepared to attack
in their turn. This they did quickly,
- and this the poem writer would have
us behovo was tho result of the pres
ence of Sheridan who came at full
gallop from Winchester, On a steed
"shod with fire," and with "hurrahs"
oaths and tho elan of bis boaring
brought tho troops up to the mark,
but this is not the truth if we go
behind tho bulletins sent to Washing
ton and thonce to the newspaper re
ports. Mr. Swinton, a northern war histo
rian and an ardent admirer of Sheri
dan, says: "The dramatic incidents
attending the arrival of Sheridan bavo
perhaps caused General Wright to
receive less credit than he really
desorves. The disaster teas over by the
time Sheridan arrived, a compact line
of battle formed, and General Wrijht
teas an thepoint of opening the offensive."

We have stated the truth of history
and protest against the well earned
fsmo of Wright being filched from
him by the erratic rhythm of this
enthusiastic rhymer, and capocially
protost against such untruthful stories
being engrafted into school books and
taught to the youths of tho country.

manufactured, but save us from lies
taught in the common schools.
