    GEORGE B. GOODLANDKll,
SDITOS ISO MoruinTOU,
CLEAU FIELD, PA.
Wednesday morning, jav. in, uti.
Oen. Frank V. Hlair, Democratic
candidule for Vice Fresidont in 18CS,
was on Tuesday lost elected Unitod
.Stain Senator by the Missouri Legis
lature. "Gen. Harry." The midden death
of Covode leave a clear field for Gen.
Wliito in. the soutborn lection of tbo
Slate as a Radical caiididato for Gov

m
Gone. Watt, the Radical Senator
who stole the scat from Dimo'nd, Dem
ocrat, and Covodo, who Bto'e the seat
of Gen.- Foster, in Congress, have
suddenly .been cnlled to settle their
final acconnt. A few more deaths of
similar characters will break np the
contestency business. Cessna and
Schenek' had belter lookout.
Inconsistent. Senator Yates of
Illinois, introduced s petition io the
Senate the other day for tho recogni
tion of the Almighty in the Constitu
tion. It might not bo a bad idea for
Richard to do a little rccogniting that
way in his own proper person.
"Drunken Dick," as he is culled at
borne, is always ready to reform every
thing and everybody but himself.
Disappointed. Bishop Ames has
failed in having himself appointed as
one of Grant's Commissioners to sloul
San Domingo. Although the Bishop
labored to get on the Committeo, tho
job is so mean that even tho negro,
Fred Douglass, refused to accept the
appointment. Bishop Simpson, and
at(least four scoro of other tchile and
Hack Republicans, have refused to ao
cept, yet Ames wants to go.
Skcbet Investigation. The rob
bery and plundering which has been
tpoing on for a number of years in tho
Methodist Book Co: cern, at Xew York,
is at length being investigated by a
proper Committee; but we are sorry
to learn that tho investigation is being
carried on in secret aesnion an in
quisition instead of an Investigation.
If those clergy in charge of the Con

the little unpleasantness on band now.
Dead. Congressman John Covodo
died suddenly at the United States
Hotel, in Uarrlsburg, on the 11th.
He was halo and hearty in tho even
ing, and by 4 a. m., was dead. He
was also Chairman of the Republican
State Central Commiltoe.
Ephraim Banks, o well known poli
tician, and six years Auditor General
of this Stnte, died the same dny, at
bis home in Lcwistown.
J. C. Campbell, a Democratic mem
ber of the Legislature from Philadel
phia, died at his home in that city the
same day.
Hon. Alex. King, President Judge
of the Seventeenth Judicial District of
Pennsylvania, diod nt his residence in

lion. John Hickman, cx-Congresn-man,
and for many years a prominent
politician, died at bis borne in West

Taut. The Philadelphia rest says :
"If yon want to get an office from
tho Legislators or Senators at Harris
burg, put yourself under training as a J
prize fl filter, kick up a tremendous
row, kill oK a man or two, make your
self notorious as a bully, and demon
strate to tho world that )nu aro al
ways r?nily and anxious to disturb the
ponce of the community."
That is a bard hit at tho Radicals
of tho House, who made the notorious
desporado Wm. J. Ovens Sergeant at
Armi of that body. I'ndicnl as the
Pott is, it revolts at the idea ol'placing
murderer in a position over some
gentlemen.
Mackuy Ei.icTin. The election

Tilton was dismissed from the edi
torial control of tho Iniicpenilint be
causo he tried to squaro its utterance
with its name. He was soon informed
that independent political views might
do very well lor private rehearsal, out
would not add anything to his salai
when mndo public. The following
a portion of tho article for which be
was discharged, which is as true lis
preaching:
"The body politic is corrupt from
one end to the other. Public officers
arc practicauy uuutib,ia ia M pw
lie auction. Political parties are sup
ported by on open and shameless tax-
levy on the saluries of officials. Influ
ence, patronage, and a friend at court
these are the pillars on which our
pontics now rust. J no glory which
attracted to the public service in the
daya of Hamilton and Jefferson has
departed. A public omco is now con
sidered chiefly in the light of furnish
ing its occupant with an opportunity
to cam his living or to mnke Ins for
tuno, rather than us a placo in which
he is to serve his country and benefit
mankind. The nation asks for a
thorough, cogent, terrible reform in
the civil administration of the Govern
ment. There must be no half way
amendment. Nothing short of a Iladi
tal chango will answerthe national ex
pectation, or will save tho Uepublican
party."
Half the Radical editors will lose
their positions if they do not quit tel
ling tlietruth about "the government"
and their parly leaders. Truth is as
fatal to Radicalism as strychnino is to
a dog.
Col. ItiniARD HiAi.r. This dis
tinguished imposter, whoa few months
ago, was employed to teach the chris
tian pcoplo of Indiana morals and
temperance, and who during hi visit
to our pliice was feasted and fluttered
by some of our best families has turned
up in tho Quarter Sessions Court of
Allegheny County as the wicked and
malicious deserter of his wifo and
child 1 The latter being an infant
only a few months old. On the testi
mony of his wife, a poor heartbroken
woman, who appeared in Court with
tho pledge of affection in her arms,
the uufuilhful Iieulf was convicted and
now awaits sentence When this lit
tle "onplcnssntness" is over wo sup
pose he will resumo his writing lor
lie ( hrutian Juxdieal, and possibly
may favor us with another temperance
lecture. The Colonel, we lear is a
graceless scamp and ought to be se
verely punished. Indiana Democrat.
The Colonel, and the paper for
which he writes, are as nearly alike
as two ace. Tho words "Colonol''
and ''Christian" aro ignominiously
associated.
Grast Wiiiskt Ilixti. All the
jrnnt folks smell of whisky. A few
days since wo published a letter from
Orvillc S. Grant, long known in Chi
raco for his relations in il.n u-l,llr-
ring, to his brother, Ulysses Grant,
actions, wrote : "1 hem aro all facts
Hint I most positively know, can
"swear to them, and can prove every
"word of them by mon under oath.
Now this confident gentleman re
tracts his letter, and says thst he
was "misinformed and prejudiced,"
and that, having "unintentionally
"prejudiced the Presidonl against hon
orable men and good officers," he has
sinco made amends by rccommerding
thnl they be retained in office. Mr. Or
rille Grant's whisky ring is now to his
mind, then it was not. That is all.

Smith, the Radical Governor has ttiven
up tho contest. We now have a Dem
ocratic Governor. Our city election
on the Cth resulted in an cntiro over
throw of carpet-bat; officials. Evcrv
member of the city government is
now ncmocratic. 1 he Kauicals used
every effort to bring negroes from ad
joining counties, as usual to voto. A
recent law passed by the Radical Leg
islaturo mndo it a criminal offence to
challenge a vote ; but if it could be
proved that a man had voted illegally,
ho was liable to criminal prosecution
The great difliculiy was to find these
negroes after the election was over.
But the plan adopted by tho Demo
crats to detect them In the late elec
tion, was this : We have eight wards
A detective forco was stationed at
each ward, with fish-hooks from So.
1 to 8. When a negro who was sus
pected presented himself, they would
fasten the hook in his coat tail, cor
responding in number to the ward.

which was a good evidence that ho
had voted ; they would arrest him at
once and send him to jail. After thev
had got about forty in jail, tho negroes
becamo alarmed and gave up thoir
plan Of repeating; and the Democrats
carmcd the city.
MiiANcnoi.T Accident. We an
nounce, with a sad heart, the death of
Amos rjtone, Ksq., one of tho most
prominent and useful citizens in the
con nty, at rsirview station, on Thnrs
dny evening of last week, nndcr cir
cumstanccs which render the event
peculiarly mournful. Mr. Stone ro
sided near the Station, whero ho con
ducted an extensive forwardinit and
commission business, besides serving
as i ostmaster ana overseeing the
management of his real estate. His
house stands on ono sido of the Lake
Shore it. It. track, and his store and
warehouse on the other, lie wss
driving a two-horse team attached to
a sleigh, and on reaching ll e crossing,
stopped while a freight trnin went by,
not noticing that a passenger train
was coming from the other direction
As soon as tho road was open, he
started the team, and had nearly
clcarej tho track, when the locomo
live of the passenger train struck the
rear of his sleigh, about a foot from
the tail piece. Mr. Stone wss thrown
about fifty fret, and, falling upon a
rock, his skull was crushed, and he
was instantly killed. He leaves a
most estimable family, consisting of a
wife and six children. Erie Cbscrcer.
Triplet Truths. Tho ablo and
eloquent Governor of New York
John T. Hoffman concludod bis An
nual Mcsrage with tho following sen
tence, composed of a triplet of truth, :
To dcjicnd, for the peace and order
of localities, on the federal army is
not self-govornmenl ; to substitute the
regular soldier with his musket as a
peaco ofiionr, in place ol the. constable
with his writ, is not to preserve the
peace but to establish tho condition ot
war; to snrrcndcrelectior.s to tho con
trol of the I'raiident, supported by
armed forces, is to surrender liberty
and to abandon a republic.
A Chicago woman asks fur divorce

lino, ho knows of forty or fidy other
men who have kissed her enough to
