THESAN DOMINGO SWINDLE.
" Wo taUo ttio following from tlie
J'liilrulolplim Age, nml, containing
more truth tlmn poolry, wo nro com
pelled to pnMihh It:
General Grant is dovoting all hie
timo to lobbying in favor of the Sun
Domingo swindle. Remittors ore sent
for, to the Whito House, and manip
ulntod, and mcmbori of Congress
touched in their weak places by the
hand which turns tho nppointmcnt
mill. It is said the President hns
prepared a lift of Congressmen, whom
' Jie relics npon to carry his San Do
mingo resolution through suceess-
fully, end snys that ho is confident
of a two thirds voto to tnko it np and
carry it promptly. This calculation
tnay or may not bo correct. At nil
events, it shows thedctiiro of Gonoral
Grant in relation to his monster swin
dle of the gc, whilo his course, in
reforenco to Senator Sumner, exhibits
his bitterness towards tboso w ho arc
bold and honest enough to oppose
and denounce his pet projoct. But the
whole question is beginning to at
tract tiio sorioui attention of the pco
plo, and tho press, in all sections ol
the Union, are opening upon it from
difforent standpoints. Tho St. Louis
Democrat, a leading Radical journal, in
' its issue of December 22, snys of tho
eagerness of General Grant to push
through tho San Domingo annexation
project: "Does President Grant re
ally suppose that these extraordinary
efforts to push through a moasure so
unpopular, will add to his personal
strength f This schemo has now been
vcntilutcd. What wo have long
known was the real motivo in tho
San Domingo plot, is no longor con
cealed. It moans war. After Sun
Domingo comes Cuba, tho rest of the
. VTest Indies, and the conflict with
foreign powers, which this stride of
Aggression would inevitably produce.
And conflict with foreign powers, it
i calculated, will make tho ro elec
tion of Grant a certainty. Long ago,
this scheme was privately and confi
dentially talked of by' person who
fcok the ro-nomination of tho Presi
dent, and talked of as if it wcro his
own, His message enables everybody
to judge for himself." Tho New York
F-vcning rest intimates that "astute
politicians," aro leading Grant in this
San Domingo business and continues :
'if the President's dosiro is to culti
vate and maintain peaceful relations
with other nations, ho will do wisely
to rsst adrift tho bnd counsellors who
nro leading him in this San Domingo
business, and other matters, to essen
tially warlike measures. Let him
ask himself what we really want with
San Domingo, an outlying island or,
rather, half and island far distant
from onr shores? Its territory we
need not covet, while wo have mil
lions of acres of our own uninhabited
nnd undeveloped. A naval station
we do not need unless we arc going
to war; but wo cannot go to war
without boing the aggressors, fur we
nro too strong and powerful for any
European nation to attack." In con
nection with these views tho Brook
lyn Eagle asks : "Why in the world
is President Grant so anxious about
tho annexation of San Domingo f It
is intrinsically a petty matter, even
by his own showing. Asido from the
fact that the people aro opposed to it,
even defeat on that iesuo would not
hurt or dumago the Executive very
seriously, unless his adhcrcr.co to the
project is based upon worso reasons
than he has seen fit to adduce. Tho
Domingo busincss is known to bo a
job and a corrupt job. Tho pooplo
would prefer to belicvo the Chief
Magistrate's associates, not himself,
were interested in the matlur from
pecuniary motives. The President,
however, will not allow them any
Fiich charilublo and qualified conclu
sion, unless he mitigates his ardor in
tho premises which ho docs not ap
pear likoly to do at present." No
doubt General Grant is anxious for a
re-nomination, and now that ho has
promoted General Duller to tho lu
crative position of ring mnstcr in all
monster jobs, the luttcr will have no
objections to such an arrangemont. It
would put money in his purso." If a
war is necessary to accomplish that
end, General Butler will provoke one,
and General Grant will allow the plan
to ripon, nnd bring forth bloody fruit,
liut the present end and aim of the
San Domingo business is pliidcr. The
dnrk gnmsters ure playing for a beovy
stake. They cannot afford to loso a
ainglo trick. Tho New York ring
ltavo "cornered'' tho President, and
ho is working in their interests. This
accounts fur tho passion and feeling
displayed by General Grant when his
plans nro interfered with ; his tender
corns trodden upon by Senator Sum
ner and others. The swindle may be
pushed through tho two Houses. But
it will be at a lerriblo cost to General
Grant. It will stamp his administra
tion with the brand of ineducable in
famy, and blazon his name npon the
pages of impartial history, as a man,
who, for selfish purposes, mado mer
chandise of the honor and character ol
tho Chief Executive of tho American
people.
