Finished. The ipire on the M. E.
Church in this placo haB boon com
pleted. It ia a fine structure and
doe credit to the congregation, and
is an ornament to the town.
Tall Church steeples should indicate
a high stulo of religious and moral
culture. On this point, howovcr, we
will allow our noighbora rather than
ourselves to express an opinion.
The Clcarfiold Acadomy School has
just closed nnothor year under tho
instruction of Prof. Harrison. That
Mr. II. has rendered antisfuction is
fully established by the fact that ho
always has a full house. There will a
vacation from now until the fifth of
September, when it will bo re opened
for another term. For terms, &c,
see advertisement elsewhere in this
isBuoof the Republican.
Tub Elements Disturbed. The
borough authorities are really ulivc.
We notico by posters that tho Town
Council has called a meeting of the
citizens on Saturday at 2 oclock, p. m.
for the purposo of taking some action
in relation to the Public Ground.
Now, let all attend, and hnvo their
say upon this subject.
A borough Ordinance will also be
found in our advertising columns of
great importance to tho citizens.
Tm Glorious 4th. The fourth of
July, with its torpedoes and Human
candles, its joys and sorrows, was
reached and panned last week. As
usual, tho day closed the career of
many while others lay mangled on
their couch. Quito a number of acci
dents happened throughout tliecounty,
ono only however proved fatal, that of
a man named Evamt, in Huston town
ship, while firing oft anvils ono explo
ded killing him instantly, and seriously
wounding two others. This should
provo a warning to the Anvil brigade
"Can't Com In." Wo huvo lately
received several anonymous commu
nications, laudatory of tho ISra Band.
Wo do not object to what tho writers
say, but those nameless communica
tions cannot oppeur in our columns.
Vio will publish no communication
on any subject without tho author's
signaturo accompanying tho article.
Any person can freely writo us in
reference to any subject, and sign bis
namo, as that will always be withheld
unless ordered otherwise, or tho wri
ter tells it himself. How often must
printers tell their correspondents that
they muslsign their communications?
Niw Bell. Wo learn that the
Presbyterian Congregation has pur
chased, and will shortly put in position
a splendid bell for their new Church
building, which by tlio way, is ono of
tho finest country structures in. the
"Union. Wa hope thai a few more
Church bolls will break up the pro
miscuous manner of going to Church
in this town. Tho hubil of a largo
portion of the congregation entering
tlio Church after the minister has
commenced his sermon, is enough to
make a Saint swear, and if bolls will
break up this habit, we ad vino our
Lutheran and Baptist friends to so
curo them soon.
Food for litri.trnoN.-Ono of thoso
astonishing freaks of naturo which
'occasionally occur "in tlio courao of
human events," transpired at Cur
wensvillo on Thursday. Sometime
in November last a 7 year old daugh
ter of Rev. S. J. Hayes, swallowed a
nocdlo ono and a half inches long
&bo soon after complained of pain in
her bowels and side, which finally set
tled in her hip. Dr. Alexander was
called in, and soon succeeded in ex
tracting tho needlo from tho child's
hip, with but littlo pain or injury,
and to tho great joy of the parents.
This should bo another warning, and
break up the miserable habit of allow
ing children to play with pins and
needles.
Sacked Soxos. Our citir.cns will
no doubt bo delighted to learn that
the world renowned singer, l'hillp
Phillips, will givo an entertainment
of Sacred Song, In the Court House,
on Friday evening next. Mr. Phillips
is as highly esteemed as a Sacred
Songster as Olu Pull is a violinist,
or Forest as tragedian, and it will
richly repay all to go and bear him.
Trice of tickets 60 and 25 cents, for
sale all over town. Wo learn that
Mr. Phillips will donate tho nett pro
cecds of the entertainment lo the
M. E. Sunday School in this place.
This should certainly stir up our
Methodist friends io a double effort,
and thereby carry off a handsome
rr'ie.

IiE Ai'PoiNTED. It gives us pleasure
to learn that Gen. Grant, bus re ap
pointed Cupt. Guulin, Postmaster.
With all duo respect for the mnny
good men who havo discharged the
duties of that offleo in this place, in
our estimation, Mr. Guulin stands at
the liend of tho list. IIo it prompt,
courteous, systomntic and exlicmcly
accommodating. Uur business nut-
urally brings us in contact with the
mails and Postmaster; and many aro
tho perplexities wo encounter through
the ignorance, carelessness and stu
lidity of Postmasters; yet wo havo
never traced ono singlo instance of
neglect to this office, since tho "gov-
criimcnt"( Andrew Johnson)nppoiiitt'd
him. Although not of our politics,
as an oiiicur, and in ono of the most
provoking positions in our political
economy, ho has few equuls, and no
superiors. And tho only thing that
puzzles us is, why he ever allied him
self with a party controlled by funnti-
cism, while entertaining liberal views
himself.
Look at Home. A Lumbermen's
meeting was held at Lock Port last
"pringi with ft view of breaking up
the habit of landing and tho buying
and selling of rufts nt that placo for
wantof secure landing, Ac. This sub
ject can bo rendered domestic, and we
havo been surprised that tho up river
people, havo not held a similar meet
ing and outer the samo complaints
against Clearfield. Although wo have
a landing for two miles, thero has not
been snap enough in our Merchants
and Hotel keepers, (who muko nearly
all their money out of raftmen) lo
plant a single post on the rivor beech
for them to tio to. Wo shall buve
moro to Bay on this subject in the
fuluro if thero is no practical inovo
mcnl mudo soon.
