OF ST. BERNARD.
a. PODO E.
It was neither tho Alps nor tho his
toric Pass that induced our party to
go Irom Martigny direct to Aoata.
Upon the whole route, celebrated by
the inarches of Hannibal, C'liarlu
ningno and Kapolcan, wo knew thero
was nothing to comparo with tho
Siorra Nevada, Arizona, or Yosomito.
Bat we were curious to seo tho monks
and the dogs, the former representing
bravo predocossors of nine hundred
years lineage, for tho hospice of St.
Bernard was found in the tenth cen
tury; and the latter, tho courage, en
durance and tho skill that looks out of
the eyes of a pure, canine breed as tho
soul of man docs from li is. Imprac
ticable, therefore, n wo were told
tho nseont was, we set forward five
of ns each with his alpenstock, a
inalo to carry our light luggage, and
domestics, their number was forty.
I hey lived w ell. No austerities were
practiced. Feasts and lasts alike in
terfered with their arduous duties.nnd
were therefore never kept. Winter
and summer, every day, they wont
with their dogs through tho 1'uss.
This was their ponanco. They need
ed their utmost strength and there
fore never denied themselves tho most
refreshing food. Their out of-door
garments wcro of fur. Calamities
were frequent. In 180.1, the prior,
w ith throo associates, three dogs, ami
seven travelers, wero swept away by
an avalantho. Tho number of visi
tors annually received overages !!,-
000. Tlicy luivo laro resources. JCo
money is demanded mini guests.
Food and fuel aro brought, during the
summer season, from tho valleys be
low. They can lode two hundred
guests without inconvenience.
While wo wcro conversing over tho
singlo guide. Crossing a deep ! firo, one of our company wus sudden-
abyss, whoro tho Drnnce forces its
way to the valley below ; avoiding
tho woods of St. I'icrro, whero JCnpo
lean encountered his greatest obsta
cles during tiiat extraordinary expe
dition of A. I). 1SU0, nnd rising bv a
new road to whero pines and lurches
uro stunted from tho altitude at
which they grow, wc reached tho rian
de Pro:, through which avalanches
sweep nine months of every year. The
plain is surrounded by heights. Blocks
of stone are scattered in confusion. De
bris of sand, rocky soil, roots and
trunks of dwarf oaks, and hollows ol
slumping snow, almost prevent pro
gross. Beginning from hence lo scale
tho mountains, vegetation gradually
disappears. Precipices of naked
granilo nre boforo you. Glaciers
Ftream into valleys far below. Fields
of ico, baro black rocks, deep pi oei
pices, wastes without a blado of grass
or tuft of moss, and a desert stcrilo as
Sahara nnd fur more horrid, aro on
cvory kido.
It was a journey of ten hours. The
sun bad set. We had left far behind
tho begging cretin, those goitered
womou and children that disgust one
with tho human race, tho inhospita
lie cavern whero wo slopped to dine,
ly taken ill. Wo feared ho was dy
ing. Tho medical monk was summon
ed. IIo assured us that it was only
tho effect of the raritied atmosphere,
an alt it k by no means uncommon,
and, rubbing him gently, administer
ing sugar water, and putting him in
a warm bed, show ing its, meanwhile,
a great bell in tho passage to bo tolled
incase ho beiumo worse, bade us ' tt lesson ol Christian toleration. In
goodnight. Ho was right. Tho pa- j their religious ceremonies we could
tient slept well, and In the morning not heartily join. Put, in .tlio ripiril
was hearty lis ever. For myself, anxi- w hich pervaded all they did, we could
ciiinliineil with Ibo runty of tho al
mophoro, prevent disintegration.
As death found the hapless victims,
they remain. The floor is lhi-k w ith
skulls nnd Ihmcs and human dust,
slowly resolving, without oHViiMve
corruption, into tho elements. Alike
ihoso who died in their hud, mid
tlin-o whom, when tho storm fill
thick nnd f,it, tho htirt ienno of snow
wound up in one white shroud; they
remain hero uwaiting tho Insurrec
tion morning.
Of tho Ht llernard tlogs, lhero wcro
nine of different nges ut (he hosjiir?.
They aro too w ell known to need des
criplion, nil of white, rough hair,
w ith tawney spots, largo limbed, deep
mouthed and broad-chested, their bod
ies thick set, heads largo and blunt,
and mouths blac k as night. Their sa
gacity has probably not been over.-ta-ted.
With coriliuls slung urouiid
their necks, four, in their turn, ac
company tho monks in their daily
sullies, Bummer unJ winter, in storm
and sunshine. Bred for a singlo pur
pose, they know their errand hardly
less their masters, w hile their instinct
often serves in belter turn than hu
man reason. Wo wero shown one,
Hector, olil, gray and linntllctl, witn
large filiiikespcriun dew -laps and body
hugo well nigh us a Highland bull,
who had saved seventeen lives. I
found my way to his heart hy scratch
ing his hugo head. His playfulness
had gono ; poor fellow, ho had learned
tho seriousness of life ; but ho had the
simplicity nnd dignity of greut size
and seemed possessed of tho gravity
of acknowledged services. Although
one could not sny of Hector as the
Scotch gamekeeper did of a solemn
terrier, H)!i, sir, life is full of solemn
sniriousness to him, ho just never
can get enough of fighting," vet
there was about him tho heavy, men
acing, sombre cotir.tenancc, the deep,
inevitablo cyo and sombre look, as of
thunder asleep, but ready, that would
sland no nonsense. Tho breed, of
uncertain origin, is carefully kept up
not only at tho hospice, but at tho
ehah ts and in tho villages below.
Two nights and a day spent with
onr Augustininn brothers ripened our
neoMiaiiilttnco into friendship. Their
good breeding, gentlo attentions, un
demonstrative kindness and watchful
forethought, their cheerful content
nicnt, uncomplaining self sacrifice anil

Pick ! Care and weariness were over,
and at 8 o'clock wo stood on the por
tal of tho Monastery of St. Bornard.
I happened to be first at tho stone
Meps and found a monk on tho top
waiting to rcooivo us. Never had
I been more mistaken in my anticipa
tions. I thought to see a tall, hale,
rough, storn old man ; but hero was
pleasant, ruddy, smiling, gonllo
manly host, about thirl years old,
w ho gave mo his hand and welcome
with tho grace of a preux chevalier. I
told him wo wero fivo, and asked if
all could bo accommodated. "All,"
he replied, "and, wero it necessary,
ton times as many moro. But you
ro wet. Stockings, shirts, and dry
nutor grmonts, are ready for you all."
I thanked him, and replied that we
had changes of garments on our mule..
He then offered his help to take ofT our
rlothcs, or for anything else ho could
do, and conducted us at once lo our
rooms, giving two with three beds,
in each. The apartments were long
net-Is in their ehfl's. It was a finoday
in the height of midsummer, nnd yet
iciclea were banging from tho eaves
and Ibin crystals of frost shooting
over tho waterpools. Snow was in
sight on every side. Hoar mountains,
scarred by avalanches, formed a hugo
amphithculro around the dull honpict.
Wo were almost within tho gates of
perpetual winter, upon rocks baro of
ull soil, and yet wo found thirteen va
rieties of moss, each with its minute
but distinctive flower of cxoiiisito
beauty.
Of course, we wero prepared to
judgo our hosts generously. They !
gave us no scant wtlcomo; it would
bo churlish lo speak of them with
niggard praiso. Aside from all that,
however, they appeared to us to bo
good men, lending godly lives. They
wero free from asceticism. Tho trials
of their lot they boro cheerfully. No
devotees were ever moro faithful to
their shrino thnn theso Auaiislininn
monks aro lo their duties. They
wero correct in opinion, so far ns we
could judgo, and liberal in sentiment.
Ono of tho brethren remarked thnt
tho Holy Catholic, Apostolic Church
consisted simply of thoso, and those
not forget tho Words of tho Apostle :
''Lovo never fuilclh ; but, whether
thero bo prophecies, they shall fail ;
whether thero bo tongues, they shall
cease; whether thero bo knowledge,
it shall vanish away." But lovo is
of Ciod, and cannot fail.
