The snow squall that passed over
our county the beginning of last week
fell t the depth of three feet at
Williamsport, Milton, and other north
eastern towns in this State.
We call the attention of our readers
to the advertisement of Mr. C. Krat
ier, who has assumed full control of
the store and goods owned by the late
J. P. KroUer, nearly opposite the
jail. Pop in and take a look at the
new arrangements.
-
Bcrned. The residence of Col.
J) wight, well known to many of our
readers, at Binghampton, If. Y., and
formerly occupied by lion. Daniel S.
Dickinson, was destroyed by fire on
the morning of the 7th. The loss is
estimated -at $70,000. The Colonel
was in Virginia at the timo.
Ifiss SwAH'a School. It will be
observed by an advertisement eW
where, that the spring term of Miss
Swan's school commences on Monday,
the 21et. We are gratified to learn
. that her efforts are fully appreciated
by the public, and that her school is
-constantly increasing in popularity,
owing to her energy and qualifications
as a first class teacher.
Musical Concert. Their adver
tisement elsewhere in this issue, indi
oales that the Clearfield Cornet Bund
is still moving forward, and propose
giving a concert on the evening of
"Washington' birth day (22d Feb.)
The County Commissioners having
consented, the exhibition will be giv
en In the Court Boom, where there
will be ample room for all, and where
each can be rendered comfortable
Prof. Bowbotham, under whose auspi
ces the concert will be bold, is one of
the best musicians in the United
Stales, and has been insinuating Lis
talents into the gentlemen who com
pose the Band, who are all citizens of
our town and of sober and industrious
habits, and doserve the liberal patron;
age of this community. Tbo mem
bers have spent much time and money
in socuring instruments and striving
ia make up a first class Band, the
music of which we oil enjoy and
appreciate whenever the Band appears
5n the streets. Let all do their best
nd give the Band a benefit, and it
becomes one of the fixed elements
needed in all civilized communities.

Clearfiild's Kesources.-Ii is being
abundantly demonstrated that lumber
is not the only supply npon which the
population of this county must rely.
Although this staple has brought mil
lions of dollars to the pockets of our
citizens, it is a mere bagatelle when
compared to the coal supply with
which our hills are filled. Beside it is
lso fully established that tbo best qual
ity and in large quantities of glass sand,
and fire brick clay is found in our
midst. Messrs. Barretts: McCnllongh
of this place have just had some of
the former tested by first class glnss
manufacturers in Pittsburg, and tbo
and yields fully 90 per cent., and
y. ot ana mm glassware as
we ever beheld. They are the owners
of large mine or quarry on Mont
gomery creek, about four miles west
of this place. The aand ia worth 110
per ton in Pittsburg, and will there
fore yield three times the profit that
is now realised on coal. Wo nnder
tand that together with some PitU
linrg gentlemen they propose to erect
glass works at the qnarry at an early
dy.
Messrs. Albert's, four miles east of
this, are operating boavily in fire
brick clay which tbey are shipping
eastward, where il Las been tested,
and proves to be the best in the Slute.
2"hey also design creeling works the
roming season. There is no better loca
tion in the State for Steam Tanneries.
With timber, coal, glass sand, fire
brick and bark of the very best
quality and in immense quantities,
what ia there to prevent us all from
getting rich, when but littlo capital
and energy is required.
Incendiarism. The dwelling of
J. B. Newton, Etq., editor of the
Cameron Herald, at Emporium, was
burned on the 11th. The building
was not quite finished, and cost about
17,000. The fire was evidontly the
work of an incondiary. Mr. Newton
had an Insurance of 11,500, so that Lis
real loss will be in the neighborhood
t-f 1.1,000.

Terriblb Disaster. Wednesday
laut Patrick Sloan and John Dolan,
miners, entered an ore bank at Matil
da Furnace, near Mt. Union, for tho
purpose of removing sonio tools from
a chest, and while in tlio act of doing
so a spark from one of the lamps full
into and upon about forty pounds of
powder which immediately exploded,
setting fire to their clothing and burn
ing thorn very severely. I bey ran
out of the mine and into tho river, (a
distance of about eighty yards) and
thus extinguished tho flumes that
were burning their clothing, but their
injuries wero so great that death was
considered inevitable. Dolan died on
Saturday morning and bis remains
were brought to Huntingdon and bur
ied from the Cutholio church, Sloan
died on Monday night and his remains
were also brought to this pluco and in
tcrred with Catholic services. Hunt

Jacob's Well. It seems that the
old Israelite, is not the only individual
who possessed a well. We find the
following account of Mr. J. M. Eep
ler's oil well, at Petroleum Centre, in
the Petroleum Centre Daily Accord.
Mr. Kepler has surely beon fortunate
"The new well on the McCray farm,
mention of which wo have heretofore
mode.yct continues to produce twenty
barrels per dsy. This well is the
property of Mr. J. M. Kepler, who
resides at Philipsburir, Centre county,
Pa. Mr. K. owns about fifteen acres
of undeveloped oil land on Ibis farm
which will eventually prove valuablo
territory. This property adjoins the
Dalzell furm.upon which lievt'lopmenls
are bcini; quite extensively made
Messrs. Sharp & Worden are about to
put down a well on tho Dalzell farm;
Mr. James Devlin also has a well
nearly completed on the Dalzell farm
Other parties are about to commence
operations on this and the McCray
furm. There is no doubt that much
good territory exists in that vicinity
and the coinin? summer will witness
active operations thereabouts."

from Mr Daniel English the particu

thul occurred yesterday, the 1st inst
about one mile south of Bolviow. Mr,
Leunder Tetrick went out cat ly in the
morning for the purpose of hauling
timber, and was seen by Mr. English
about ten o'clock while in the wood
near Lis residonce, in the act of load

o'clock in the evoning Mr. English
was returning from Ringgold, and
when opposite the place where ho ha
seen Mr. Tctriik in the morning, Lis
attention was attracted by the wail
ings of a female in tho woods ; scvora'
other persons coming op at the same
time, tbey went to her assistance
wbon most horrible sight met thei

hour before Mr. Englinh camo up
his wifo in searching found him
corpse with the log resting on his body
The anguish ol tho wifo and mother
upon such a discovery can more easily
bo imagined than described, lie was
the father of four children, who, almost
frightened to death, wero found crying
in different parts of tho woods, where
they had strayed in tho confusion.
LI is body was taken up and removed
to his homo, where tho friends and
neighbors met to consolu tho ulmont
