Tattling.
Tlie following selection from the

with such people. They are common
enemies to goodness. Hunt, burry

are the worst of pests save ono, and
that is the listener to the tale-bearer.
There could be no tattling if there was
no one to bear. It takes an esr and
n tongue to make a gossip. Greedy
listening ia as dishonorable as nimble
tattling. The ear is the, open market
where tho tongue sells'its ill gotten
wares. Some there are who will not
repeat again what they hear, but they
me willing to listen to it. They will
not deal in contraband goods, but will
buy enough of the smuggler lor house
use. Then respectable listeners arc
thepatronsof tattlers. It is the ready
market that keeps tale-bearing brisk.
It is a shamo to listed to ill of your
neighbor. Christian benevolence de
mands that you do not love ill news.
A clean l)oart and true honor rejoice
in kindly things. It should be a pain
and sorrtfw to know of anything that
degrades your neirhbor in your eyes,

how much more if he be your friend !
"The scriptures say, "Thou shall
not go up and down as a tale-bearer

as wounds that go down in to the inner
most parts of the belly." Tho He
brews thought that the affections had
their seat in tho bowels; and by this
phrase "go down into the innermost
parts of too bolly," they signified how
aharp and exasperating to tho doep
eits and best feeling of our nature are
the cruel offices of the common tattler.
