tt will be seen that locals aro scarce
this week but fow marrisecs and
deaths rcportod no body hurt as fur
as we have learned all quiet along
we Buequehniina.
The butchering season is now upon
ns.and wo hear daily the death shriek
of the dying porkers. There arc said
to to souio good hogs to be killed in
our borough this season, but not so
many as formerly.
' FibeI A fire occurred at l'hilips
turg on Saturday Inst, which totally
destroyed the stable belonging to the
"Grant House," owned and kept by
Mr. Myers, who was in tho stablo
short time previous to tho fire, and
saw several children playing in the
. Lay mow. Unless they were playing
with matches and accidentally ignited
the hay, the cause is unknown. Mr.
Myers lost several tonB of hay, and a
quantity of grain, but the horses were
' saved. Thero was no insuranco on
the property.
Clear Yoke Sidewalks. Wo no
ticed the snow on the sidewalks in
front of quite a number of buildings
in our borough yesterday, twenty-four
hours after it had fullcn, to be tram
ped in paths. Tho sooner the snow
is cleared away after fulling, the
easier it is done. And as winter is
just setting in, we may expect frequent
snows, and if not removed from the
sidewalks, it will be tramped down and
form" tntb' ice, and thereby retard the
progress, if not endanger tho lives and
limbs of onr citizens. Wo deem it
unnecessary to say anything more on
this subject, as it is a duty incumbent
upon each and every property holder.
"A word to the wiso is sufficient."

Wo havo nn udditionnl complaint to
file against tho "ring" on tho hill.
From tho look of things at this dis
tance from tho field of conflict it ap
pears sb though tho School Depart
ment had got inside of tho ring, too.
Heretofore tho Stato tax realized
from personal properly in this county
was held by tho County Treasurer
for the purposo of liaing tho District
bchool Dinfts, which wore usually
issued, or a largo portion of thorn,
during July and August. This J-oar,
howovcr, Treasurer Mackey, in July,
ordered our County Ti cusiirer, through
tho County Commissioners, pcrcmp.
torily to pay ovor the whulo umount
of tho tax thus roalizod, or incur a
penalty of ten per cent. Tho countv
ofllcors of course complied with the
requirements of their superiors and
sent them tho money.
JNow comes tho charge relating to
tho School Department: No School
Warrants woro issued from tho De
partment until after our money was
paid to Treasurer Mackcy. Then,
however, they came out thick and
fust, when there was no mone in the
hands of the County Treasurer as
heretofore to lift them. Hence the
School Treasurers aro compelled to go
to the banks and submit to a Bhavn or
go to Uarrisburg to get their money.
Now, why was not money enough
left in tho hands of tho County Treas
urer to lift the School Drafts f and
why were not the Drafts ieeued before,
the 25th of September t
Tho result of this blind financial
operation on the part of tho Stato
officials is that tho School Treasurers
aro constantly annoying tho County
Ircnturer for funds over which bo
has no control.
Had matters been allowed to remain
as they existed heforo tho advent of
Mackcy, all could havo been accom
modated and remained quiet as here
tofore. But as it is it looks as though
an imposition had been practiced upon
our people by the Mackey ring.
A country subscriber informs the
Lycoming (county) Standard, that a
ben in that section has been setting
for seven weeks on a half dozen pota
toes, which havo sprouted beautifully,
so that the stocks appear above her
head nicely leaved. If tho hens havo
no better knowlcdgo of the differenco
between eggs and potatoes, it is some
what surprising that hens and roosters
thrive down thero.
A Fuee Ride. When tho Southern
bound passenger train of the Orange
road was a few miles this side of Beal
ton Stution, on Sunday, running nt
full speed, an ox jumpod suddenly on
the track a short distance ahead of
the engir.e, and in less than fifty yards
from a bridge one hundred and fifty
feet long. Tho engineer whistled
"down brcak-i," but tho iron horse
plunged on, and his oxship, not get
tine out of the way, found himself
suddenly honored with a free ride on
tho "cow catcher," and was carried
across tho bridge and somo distnnco
beyond it before it could bo stopjed.
When it was finally checked, tho en
ginoer, brakesmen, nnd others on the
train, hurried to tho front to remove
what they imagined lo bo a dead "cat
tle," but before they got to him, the
ox extricated himseli from tho "cow
catcher," jumped from tho track into
an adjoining field, kicked up his heels,
and started off at a full run, appa
rently unhurt, and showing no evi
dence of dislike at the courtesy of a
"froo ride." irarrenfori(Va.).Scnfinff.
New Economy. A Washington cor
respondent says :
"Seven hundred dollars in Treasury
notes were loat lust week in tho rooms
of the Printing Bureau of the Treasury j
Department, and tho female clerks
employed thero were searched closely,
hut tho money not forthcoming they
huvo been mulcted in seven dollars
each to make up the loss. The ladies
complain that tho money might have
been lost in any other part of their
building, and they ouirht not to bo
made to bear the wholo loss both of
money and character."
This looks just like somo of Butlcr'i
work. Ho is death on women.
