IHmocratU Stale Convention.
The Democratic State Convsntion
(or the nomination of candidates for
the olllces of Governor and Judge of
the Supremo Court, will meet at 10
o'clock, a. m., on Wednesday, July 14,
1 809. in the Hull of tho House of Rep-
renentative at Harrisuurg. fty order
vt the democratic State Committeo.
W51. A. WALLACE, Chairman.
David Caldwell, Socrotary.
Our .VomimrrM.
Tho proceedings elsewhere in to
day's pnper, indicate that the Demo
crats of this county, on the 19th inst.,
iicld an election far tho purpose of
nominating a county ticket, and that
3IeFrs. Lawslie, Flcgul, Ilindmnn and
Uil'cr nil good men and uncompro
mining Democrats were elected.
Mr. John Lawolie, the nominee lor
Assembly, is a resident of Osceola
borough, and one ol tho most prosper
ous and energetic business men in the
county. Should the district Conven
tion sco fit to confer tho nomination
' on him, he will, of conrse, be elected,
and will prove himself to be the infe
rior ofnone,andthesu perior of many
who have held scats in the Legislature
from this district.
In common with the Democracy of
this county, we bold that in no sense
can, nor does, Clearfield claim the
Kcpreeentntive at this time, except in
the presenting of a firrit-class candidate.
If, however, the conferees from Elk
and Forest can properly servo their
constituents and the Democracy ol the
district by nominating Mr. Lawshe,
Clearfield will not be unmindful of
such a mark of respect.
Mr. Lever Flcgal, our nominee for
county Treasurer, isa ciiiien ol Brady
township the "Berks' of this county.
He is engaged at farming, we believe,
was one of the Justices of the Peace
jf that township, from 1SG0 to 18G5,
and is woll and favorab'y known to
many of tho citisens of the county as
nn active business man and a zealous
Pemocrnt. Ol his election there is no
doubt, and we are satisfied that the
taxpayers of the county will not regret
having reposed their confidence in
him j besides, the Democracy will
have in hi no a worthy representative.
Mr. Pnmool 11. Ilindman, the nom
inee for County Commissioner, is a
citizen of Beccaria township, and is
an industrious, (as an old acquaintance
of his expresses it, "never idle,") first
clans mechanic, (mill wright) and an
enthusiastic Democrat of the old
tlioul style. In him the party will
have an able champion, endowed with
liberal view and practical economy.
His election is of course a foregone
conclusion.
Mr. John D. Miller, the other nom
inee, now resides in Boll township,
but for a number of years was a 3iti
acn of Ferguson township, where be
discharged the duties of Justice of the
Peace while a resident. He is compe
tent and honest, and will therefore
stake a good Auditor.
The defeated candidates are all up
right, competent men, too, but the
futes have not been on their side this
time, while the majority of those who
M-rnt to the polls strongly preferred
thoso iibove indicated, and they aro
too wise not too hoed the voice of the
pontile on this subject, and, like scores
of good Democrats who bave been
.lefeatod heretofore, will no doubt
submit like men.
A M,w Move. Our foxy I'rcsidcn
General Grant, still continues in the
Cabinet making business. On Friday
last he turned Boris out of the Navy
Department, and appointed one Geo.
M. Robeson, of Camden, New Jersey.
Whether he is a relative of Grant's,
or one ol his heavy centributors, we
know not, but to the political world
liohcson is a stranger, never having
held any office except filling a vacancy
in the Attorney Generalship ol Sew
Jersey. There are rumois of other
changes, but, ns Grant "talks nothing
H the time," no one knows what is;
going to happen.

The Democratic Mute t'onventinn
meets at llarrisbnrg on the 14th day
or J uly, for lbs purpose of nominating
a candidate for governor and for
Supreme Judge. We sometime ago
took the liberty W declare our per
sonal preference for (en Cass, for the
former office, and believe tlist a largo
majority of the Democrats of this
county would so vole It an opportuni
ty wore offered them. Hut enough
on this point at this time. Our pur
nose is to call the attention of Demo
crats to the Supremo Judge question,
which seems to be drifting quietly
along without centering public opinion
upon any one in particular, each Dem
ocratio judicial district, where an ex
pression has been bad, selecting tho
occupant upon the Uencli.
Tho Democracy of this county, in
January last, passed resolutions in
structing delegates Irom this district
to vote for Hon. George R. Barrett.
Since that time a portion of the
"Tenth Legion" bus also endorsed
biro. Tho Democracy of YVaynu
eounty, at their regular Democratic
meeting, soon aflor, passed tho fol
lowing resolution :
"Tbal we most oordiallT ndora th roeolntion
of Hie Clearfield county Democrat, recommending
th linn. lloorg. II. Barrett, our popular end irarnod
1'rc.ttl.nt Judge, for tho Supremo Bench of tliu
Btl. and hereby lu.lrucl our Ht-natonal and Kep-
rreeutalive Jji-lrgetra to vole fur bi nomination at
the Mat Plate Convention."
This resolution cannot be misunder
stood. Similar resolutions were passed
by the Democrats of Carbiu, Monroe,
and Pike counties. No other candi
date named has had a warmer ex
pression in his favor than Judge
Barrett. Ilo therefore goes into the
Convention, if be so desires, well en
dorsed by Democratic counties where
be is personally known and where
talents are appreciated. Should the
assembled wisdom of the Stale, in
Convention, declare for li i in, they will
make a wise choice; but if they decree
otherwise, tbey will find no warmer
nor moic zealous advocate for the
ticket than Judge Barrett.
a

IiKkominatf.d. The negro advo
cates in this Slate met at Harrisburg
last week, and nominated one John
W. Geary, a white man, for Governor,
and II. W. Williams, also whito, for
Supreme Judge. Mr. William was
defeated two years ago by Judge
Sharswood. He is now upon the
Bench, having been appointed to that
position by Genry, upon the resigna
tion of that political sneak, Judge
Strong. Geary is the easiest man
defeated that the black and white
Republicans could have put in the
field. The resolutions adopted by the
Convention favor negro sufTrare.
Honest, for once, to the white; bii1
not to the "nigger."
"Loii" newspapers and politicians
say that Gen. Grant will not be a can
didate for a second term. We think
he will do very well if he escnpes
death from the hands of his friends
during bis first term. A second term
would be certain death. The Buds,
under whatovcr name they went, have
always killed their Presidents, except
ing the case of John Quiucy Adams.
Assembly Conference. Tho Con
ferees of this Legislative district will
meet at Tionesta, Forest county, on
Thursday, tho l!)lh day of August
nozt, for tho purpose of nominating a
candidate for Assembly. The Con
ferees from '.his county are Dr. R. V.
Wilson, John G. While and Daniel
Goodlandcr.
The New York Dcnnrrnt puts the
nomination of Geary in the following
stroneliirht: "The Jacobin disunion-
lists of Pennsylvania have nominated
. Geary for Governor of that Stale.
Geary is acknowledged to be the most
unpopular misccgenationist in the
State, and it was only because his un
scrupulous scheming had given him a
hold upon the Badicals which they
could not shake, that he was nomina
ted. Kver since Grant was elected to
tho Presidency a strong influence has
leen working to get a government
ptwition of siime kind for Geary, that
he might be lifted from the shoulders
of the Keystone Congne, but without
svail, and he is left for the people to
dispose of this fall, when they will
teach him something about the nigral),

is briefly this: Iluring the rcijxn of

under a military guard, confined in

of indignities, and finally released
without a word of explanation. When
the war ceased, suit was brought
against Mr. Washburne and his "pal"
by their victims. At first they boldly
pleaded justification, but finally. Cud

and were liable to lie mulcted in heavy
damages, aubspqunntly withdrew the
plea which they had first put in, and
to conciliate the man whom they had
