arlitieiitl Btiinuluritu, ns liushish, or
dupcrindueed by mirttly moral cause,
dooms to have been the necessary
mental condition or all assassins, aud
indeed is their chief characteristic.
This brings us to the derived sense
of tbo word. Assunsin is defined to
be a secret murderer but although
the word is frequently used indiscrim
inately to denoio all kinds of secret
murder, yet nu aswssin by pre-omi-neuco,
is something more than a mur
derer. Indeed, it is not to much the
act, nor the manner of it, whether
secret or open, for most assassins are
bold to recklessness, but the motive
-which determines the nature of the
at t. Tlio motive of the assassin rare
ly, if ever, a purely personal, selfish or
private one; but the word hasassumed
a political meaning, and tho historical
UMaesin acts in obedience to some
higher law, of which bo persuaded
himself by liU own peculiar and falla
cious reasoning that he is the chosen
executor. Some motive of public,
political, national, patriotic or reli
gious necessity prompts him.
Tho reasoning that brings the will
to such a remedy lor any evil or op

fallacious, and betokens a diseased

Feiullants, but expelled from it as a
fanatic, afterwards returned to bis

gloomy funaticism engendered in him

faith, and ore of the most enlightened
tnoiinrc-ba who eversst upon a throne,
whom, however, bo bad been taught

A genial, w arm hearted, whole soub d
niun was stricken down, in the very
acme, of his fuino, by an enthusiast
and reckless sentimentalist, whoso
avowed object was to rid the world of
a tyrant , but whoso real ambition was

very ones to perish at their bunds.
Thu only fiict that can be otfered in

Bankruptcies.
Tho human mind in pursuit after
truth, can only arrive at it by perse
verance and investigation, and hence
it is the first duly of rationul minds
never to neglect any source or avenue
from whence the light of truth may
como. Nor is it concerning truth in
iho abstract uloue that this postulate
holds good, for in every department of
hiiinau life where wisdom, prudeneo,
punctuality, and skill aro required,
there is especially required tho most
untiring investigation and wakelul
discernment. In the mercantile life,
where skill, produce and wisdom are
csonlially necessary, how very appli
cable is ibis doctrine. In limes like
the present, when so many business
men have gone under forced bv ab
solute insolvency lo leave the stage of
uctive business a scries ol investiga
tions into the causes of every bank
ruptcy, would indeed form a valuable
part ol mercantile knowlege, and much
of tho blumo that is thrown upon the
laws regulating bankruptcy courts, or
the fancied want ol humanity in hard
creditors, would bo found resolvable
into unskillfulness, ignorance, im
punctuality and imprudence. Trading
with insuflifienl capital, borrowing at
too high a rnto of interest in propor
tion lo the amount of profits, too ex
pensive an establishment, either in
fixtures or clerks, dissipation and
hivi.-h expenditure of self or family :
these are sonio of tho fruitful sources
of bankruptcy. Wo havo known
instances wbero ruin was canted by
rontinuul leaks among dishonest em
ployees, nnd these will sometimes
elude the vigilance of Iho most watch
ful business man. In many instances
the aid of detectors bus to he enlisted
in older to detection. Wo know of a
large house in this city in which two
of Iho detective force of Mr. Pinker
ton, of Chicago, hud been employed as
clerks, for tho express purpose of
detecting a louk of long standing.
When we go into a billiard room, and
toke a snrvey of tho crowd engaged
ut the different tables and notice the
chief and lieutenants of police, pu (Ting
their cigars and punching the ivories
about along with lavish clerks and
impudent merchants, we think to
ourselves: "Thoughtless, imprudent
men !" yon uro paying dear for the
whistle; you little dream that a mem
orandum book acount is being correct
ly kept of nil your spending !"
Bankrupt laws are enactod with a
large view to the protection of trade,
and lo gtinrd honest and honorable
creditors from the frauds of dishonest
traders. They are largely based up
on the principlo that when a trader
admits or declares that he it unable
to meet his engagements, or allows
himself to be uod, or his paper pro
testedhe should be deemed an
insolvent. There are many hard
ships both to the debtor and creditor
connected with the bankrupt code,
but the lesson taugnt by the courts
and by exporieiice is lli.it prevention
is better than can.Juurnul of Com
merce. A boy wna recently excused from
school to attend a funeral, but a
traunt officer found him, soon after,
witnessing a game of bnse bull nnd
asked him why be did not go to the
funeral. With the utmost coolnea
the youngster replied : ''1 wont down
to the houso to attend it, but tho man
wouldn't die 1"
