A Gband Klopcmekt. Our Punx
sutawtiey neighbors have enjoyed a
first class sensation for the past three
weeks, brought about Ly Rev. J. J.
Shorlhill, tho Baptist clergyman, leav
ing his wilb and eloping wilh another
man's, (a sister of his flot k, in pood
standing.) Ho had preached lo that
congregation for ten yenri, and bore
a high character as a citizen and an
able and zealous clergyman, no one
ever suspecting him of being possessed
of .even devils. Men who violate cv
cry sacred and fociul privilege, and
uproot tho foundations of society as
this man hsa done, should be hung

Annexation. Since the completion
of tho railroad to this place, tho peo
ple of ritilipsburg and flush township
begin to fully realize their unnatural
nllianco with Ccntro comity. The
Allegheny mountain barrier has and
will forever disconnect them from
that county, and naturally assigns
them to Clearfield. The citizens of
that borough and township are com
pelled to scale tho mountain (2S miles)
or go via Tyrone, (02 miles,) to reach
their County Seat, (Bellofunte,) spend
two days to mnko tho trip, and
incur un cxprnso of about six
dollars ; while they can nil reach
Clearfield in from 17 to 20 miles, by
spending only from three to four
hours time and about one dollar and
fifly cents in money, besides enjoying
tho society of their neighbors and
business associates. Wo understand
that a largo ninjority ot the citizens
of theso two districts favor annexa
tion to Clem field, becauso of tho ra
I tiro and cheap facilities offered them
in this direction to attend to their
legttl hntincss.
Wo shall interposo no objections,
becauso wc fully realize their condi
tion, and presume Centre eounty will
have no objections, as tho citizens of
that county lull- nppreciato the situa
tion of the inliibitants of these two
districts, and would no doubt favor
secrssiun, too, if similarly situated.

One day last week each Senator and
Representative at Washington found
a cake of highly perfumed and elabo
rately ornamented soap on his desk.
Chandler, tho dirty Senator from
Michigan, who had never seen soap
before, inquired whnt it was, and on
being informed of ils use, ho presented
his calto lo Kcnalor Sumner. Being
asked how he got rid of his outer
crust without tho aid of soap, ho re
plied that ho had himself scraped with
a corn cob once every year. He sny
he don't tuko on din as fast as Sumner,
who has himself souped and scraped
down wilh the backbone of a herring
every day.
