Mr. Williams is a modern illustra tiona dramatist, a jurist, and divine. He knows bo is a ready and rapid writer, as his clnboritto reply asserts. No amount of learning, no piety, no powers of praying, (however loud,) can sustain a wrong; lionce hia ignoble failures to disprove my assertions. What Wore they 1 Tho question ul issuo is this : Is it according to U. S. law to pray or read a Riblo in common schools or institutes? 1 asserted, tho illith of last November, that this practice was unconstitutional, and a violation of a plain command of their own version of the liihlo. His learned and ioVV reply appuared only December 17th. I will now prove tlio correctness of my position, ond then review his statements. Frco-will is God's Miigna Charla ffireat Charter) to man. If abused, He will punish. The Constitutions (U. S. and I'a.,) give every man a light to worship God as bo" pleases; hence, if ho violutos no law of the land, ho is accountable to God alono. Education, if possible, should bo based on religion on the true religion. mere is no probability that men will aoon agree on what is true faith ; tienee the wise lorosight ol the illus trious men who framed tho Constitu tions master-pieces of human legisla tion. Jill legislation, to bo law, must be in accordance with these excellent sources of equality. Tho laws regard ing common schools and institutes are so framed. The County Superintend ent must "sec that orthography, read ing, writing, Jintrlinu grammar, coos- raphy and arithmetic" lie taught in me common scnoois, "as well as such other brunches as the Board of Direct ors, or Controllers, may require." (3) directors, or feupcnnlendents, are "confined," (pretty harsh, that,) "in Iheir examinations of candidates for teachers, to Iheir fitnes as to moral character, learning and ability." ) -or can any person teach "other brandies than those pet forth in such certificate of said teacher." (4) The County Superintendent "is authorized and required to call and invito the teachers ol the common schools, Ac, "and organize themselves into a Teach ers' Institute, devoted to the I'mprorr- mri( of teachers in the science and art of teaching," Ac. A teacher who "absents himself from tho institute of bis county, without a good reason, may have bis want of professional spirit and zeal indicated by a lower mark: on lus ceriincate in the practice ol teacinng, man no otiterwise would baro received." ) I can find nothing raid about any kind ol worship, pray er, or Rible-reading in the schools or institute. It should be well-remem bered, in this connection, that the County Superintendent make oath to perform all his omcial duties hon estly, impartially, diligently, and ac cording to law. ! ) "1 o the luw and to tbo testimony 1 have summoned you ;" they decide in my favor, that the public" school, or inslitutis, is nei tkal xhul.nd, where neither Catholic nor I'rotcstant has any right, from God or man, to wor ship, pray, or read any version of the liihlo. As a military colonel bat well said, "our public schools houid be free as air to the rich and poor, Christian and Mehomedan. (F) No pretentions to pictvor learuinir can set aside this jusi and peaceable neutrality. "Pre dilections ot parents, to lie carried out legally and justly, must bo done on thcirowa pretmfm. Where parents and pastors are tho real anil entire owner, thry can worship as they think proper; but nowhere elu. All parties have an equal ihare in the common school, or institute; of course, then, no man no matter how zealous or pious hi conseitnee is can usurp what belong equally to others. Tho Constitutions and School laws do not say tho myurity may dictate to or dogmatize, over tho minority All the blustering, "loud praying," must be done, if legally, On your oicn ground alonr in Your dwellings and meeting-houses. If this is not the plain and obvious meaning of U. S. law, freedom of worship would be impossible Many persons discard Catholicism, and "the thousand and one" phases of Protestantism ; no law, divine or human, ran coerce them, as long as they respect tho rights of others. Tho version of tho liihlo are as conflicting a tbo creed. A few ex ample will illustrate my meaning : 1. In the number of books; what one says is scripture, another says is "doubtful" 2. Discord oven about tb Lord's Prayer. The Protestant says the the Catholic lubtraelt ; tho hitler says tho former ii,i to tbo text ; and both versions pronounce a dreadful curse on the falsifier of the divine record. 3. ''Rut if they eannot contain," Ac, (Prot. version, 1 Cor., c. vii '.I;) the Catholic version uvs, "if they do not contain themselves." "Cannot con tain" citiinoif be cli, tfte a falsehood. 4. "Wherefore, whosoever shall eat this bread onif drink," Ae. ; the Cath olic says, "or drink," (1 Cor., ii 27.) a contradiction. 1'hrro is also a dispute about the Decalogue. Some Protestant denom inations say Christ is not (,od. To a great theological chemist, like Kev. Mr. W., it is a mere trifle till is J'ro testantism nl' light, then. Catholics must discriminate between a divine and a human creed, 'J'hcy cannot, iike the person censured hy tiiblion, sign their sanction "with a sigh or a smile," nor can thev be like ' Puley's Christian, who couldn't say 'no" to nobody." This, then, is my proof. Rer. sir, my charge is sustained. Your own version ol the Rible commands yon to "cbey the higher power," Ac, ( Rom. xii : 17 :) tho Constitutions (U. S. and Pa ,) and the school laws, on the pres ent question, are the higher power to all; hence, since the Institute claim the right to compel Catholic, ifther attend, to listen to their pray etn.ther set aside, nut only American law, but even assumo preater power lhan the God man, for He forced no one to listen to llitn pray or worship. ..... ..,.,.y...i.lt..ia i, i I I Will nun cxrinioiej .mi aliiieiin n(a, ! Objections answered : 1. "Strange, to object ta prayer." No, sir, on neutral ground ; anything else would bo hypocrisy. Persons do pray "amiss" sometime. St. James says: "And many flatter God with their mouths and lio to him with their tongues," ( Ps. 8S fill.) Why would not "God's Itenedicliou" bo givon as soon for individuals' prayer, on their own premises, ns at tlio Institute f I asked this question in my last; you could give no reply. 2. "Catholics did not ask lo wor ship." Ofeourxo not; they will not force their creed, or their Rible, on any one. ii. "Why couldn't Catholics worship with Protestants?" iJecnuso Christ founded their church, and men mado yours. 4. "But the prayer was Protestant." Any kind would be illegal. 6. "Tbcro ia prayer in Congress." No purity; all are'f'roo to bear the prayer, or not, as they think fit. Teachers aro not on the same footing. Even then, the practico is Calvamstic, (introduced by tho Congrcgationalist, Samuel Adams, via Old and New England, Scotland, and Geneva.) (i") 0. "The school laws," p. 75. Was not a word of tho law. Strange yoa did not know the State Superinten dent's ad vice from an Act of Assembly ; and yet you promised to "enlighten" the "ignorant" R. C. P. "Our Pap says the Catholic man knows nothing about the school laws." Very amus ; ...j t.ii r..i 1 iiv..il: . "hi huu.iui ; ruining more is said on the subject." What wild as sertion ! If this is your luminous ex position of human law, what must be your authority in divinity? 7. "If Catholics and Protestants want to pray, none can stop them legally." Not true; all equal on neutral ground. What nonsense this "polly-piotv" is ! Could yon, sir, lis ten to the Mass, Invocation of Saints, Ac, at the Institute? or would yott npjvrove a Catholic saying his praycri or reading what you call "Apocrypha" (doubtlol ) in common schools or insti tutes ? If so, you would not be "a jewel of consistency." 8. "J ho Constitutions profess to bo founded on King James' Riblo." Yes, you My so. It might bo as near to the truth to assert that tbo Model has tho British Constitution ; and the best parts of it owe their origin to the Great Charter wrung from the tyrant John, in 1215, by Catholic Prelates and Barons. The version of tho crowned pedant was not even tbe first Protestant one, as you seem to think ; and the Catholic church had the origi nal for over fifteen hundred years, under her solo care and protection. fl. "Catholics have done nothing for this country." Tbo best Protestant writers that ever lived refute you, Rev. sir, such as Washington, tun croft, Ac. (it) Thus your own youch ersare turned,(swift witnesses"ngainst you. Catholics, for their numbers, have done as much for their country as their other lollow-oitizens. Y'our cause is a bad ono, Rev. sir ; hence even yonrlrif lore, knowledge of theology, and general learning, havo fuiled to maintain it. 1 am none afraid of American jurors. This is not my first brush vith the "school men ;" if I fail now, it will be the first time. 1 flatter no one, but I stato a fact: I have tcver yet "ignorant" advocate as I am appealed in vain to American love of fair play and impar tial justice.
