WANTED AT THE CROSS KOADS,
I yras in a hurry to reach home
No wonder, for it wits tho wildest
night 1 had over known in all my Jifo,
and tho conntry over winch I took
niy way as lad a country roads in
general. ConRoqnenlly I wne. walk
ing at a great rate, with tho collar oi
my rough coat over my earn,-and a
comforter tied over my soft hat and
tinder my chin, to keep it on and to
protect my cars, when suddenly a man
atood full in my path and caught me
by the arm
"Hullo!" said ho; "You're just in
time; you'ro wanted at the Cross
Itoads to-night !"
The voice was the voice ol a ruffian
I fancied myself attacked by a high
way man. I stood quite still, and
strove to show him by my manner
that I was able to protect myself.
"What the dcuco am I wanted at
the Cross Roads for?" said I. "Unless
I chooso, it will bo a very hard matter
to got me there.
But instead of producing a pistol
and demanding my money or my lile,
tho man answered in an altered tono:
"Beg pardon; I mado a mistake. 1
I thought it was my brother, and 1
wanted to frighten him. Bad night,
air."
"Very," said I.
"You don't know tho lime, sir J" he
asked
"It was seven whon I left the train

"Good night."
"Good night," said I.
If his object had been robbery, pro
bably he had docided from my rough
appoaranee that I was too poor a man
to bo worth the trouble. But, after
all, I thought, probably he spoke the
truth. A man may have such a voice
without being a highwayman, no
doubt. So I went homeward, and
eoon found myself under shelter, at d
taking of a warm and savory supper
Wy mother was thore and my bro-
ther Ben. Ben was a great strapping
fellow, who could beat any other boy
of his ago for miles around, if it came
to wrestling or boxing, and as good
humored a boy as ever lived: a boy
always to mother and I, though he
had exercised his right to vote already
in ono Presidential election. When
supper was ovor. and wo bad chatted
for an hour, we wont np stairs to
gether. Y c share one room together.
The moment Ben's head touched the
pillow ho always went to sleep. That
night I followed his example. But I
did not sleep long without a drenin
a dream in which I felt a rough grip
on my arm, and was aroused by tho
cry in my ears
"Wake op! You are wanted at the
Cross Ponds !"
It was so real, so palpable, that
when I startod broad awako, I actu
ally be.icved that some one was in the
room ; the man wlio inUindod robbery
ur Yimenco. nut when I had arisen
and lit my lamp, tho room wns empty,
except mysell ana lien, who lay snor-
ng on ins pillow.
i went to tho door; it was lockod.
I went to tho window; tho rush of
ram against the panes was all that I
beard. I cvon went across the pass
go to my mother s room. Sho was
awake; there had been no unusual
sound, sho was suro.
Only a dream born of my meeting
im- orange man on the road, I felt,
iu awakoned me. I went to bed and
leil asleep again. Again I wrt awak
on ry tno same words, this time
snrickcd in my car by an unearthly
voice :
"Wake up, wake up 1 yOB are
wanted at t!,0 Cross Jioads."

I also, in ten minutes, slept a sound
ly as belore, but the awakening soon
came again.
I opened my eyes to seo a gin
standing at the foot of my bed. A
girl in white robes, with golden hair
all about her shoulders, who wrung
her bands and cried : "Oh, wake up ;
you aro wanted at the Cross Bonds !"
This time I started out of bed,
bathed in a cold perspiration. I trem
bled liko a leaf. I had uo doubt that
I had received n supernatural warning.
"Ben," I cried, "Ben, for the third
tiino I hnve been told that I am want
ed at tho Cross Itoads, and I am now
going."
And I began to dress myself as
speedily as posihlc,listcning the while
to tho storm raging wilder and wilder
man at any period since ila com
mencement. Ben remonstrated with mo in vain.
At hist lio also began to huddle on his
clothes.
"If you have gone mad I must go
with you and take care of you," he
said. "But fancy another miin going
out in a storm like this to the Cross
Roads, because a night ruuro cuused
him to do so, und what would you
think of him !"
I suid nothing. All I could have
answered would have been : "I am
compelled to go; I must go. I dare
not refuse, whatever may be thought
ofiiio."
In ten minutes we woro splashing
through the mud and rain along the
road. It was perfectly dark; now
and then a bluxod red star in the dis
tance told us that a lamp was beam
ing through the rain in some cottage
window, but otherwise we could not
have been conscious of our proximity
to any habitation whatever. At last,
nearing t,be spot whore the road from
S crosses tho road to P -, we
were indeed in as solitary a place as
can be imagined.
The Iioubo, which ubutted on the
very angle of the roads, called in fa
miliar parlance the Cross Roads, was
tho only ono for some dis'ance in
cither direction, and certainly on sucb
a night we were not likely to meet
any travelers.
All was quiet as tho grave. We
stood quito still. In a moment Ben
broke out iu oue of his wildest laughs.
"Well," he said, 'how no ? Will
you go homo now and have another
nightmare ?
But hardly had ttie ino enaped
his lips when a shriek broke on the
uir, and a woman' voice plainly com
ing from tho interior of tho cottage,
cried :
"Help! help ! help!"
"Ben," said I, "we are wanted at
the Cross Roads," and then under
standing each other, without more
words we mado our way to the win
dow, through which a light shone A
muslin curtain draped tho panes, but
through it we saw an awul sight. An
old man lay on the floor, and over
him bent a ruffian, clutching his throat,
and holding a pistol to his ear, while
another man granped tho shrieking
girl by tho arm a girl in n floating
night-dress with such long golden
hair as belonged to the girl of my
vision. Mot a mometit was to be
wasted. Ben flung his weight against
tho slender lattieo and crushed it in,
and we hud grappled the ruffians be
foro they knew from whenco the at
tack came, or how many foes wore
upon them.
I do not intend to describo the Strug'
gle; indeed, I could not if I would.
But we woro strong men, and inspired
by the ciies of the helpless old man
and tho terrified girl, we soon had one
of the villains bo-ind and the other
lying prostrato pn the floor.
Then Ben started for assistance, and
before morning both woro in jail. Ben
admitted, as Wo shook each other by
tho hand, that "wo were wanted at
tho Cross Roads."
Tho old man wns not a minor, but
ho had aaved aomo few thousand dol-
ars for his old ngo, and living more
plainly than he ncod havo dono, had
givon rise to the rumor, and so brought
the burglars to the Cross lioads in the
hope of booty.
The girl,, a hcntififul creature of
