this period of my life J remember with

1 bud left my friends' liouso one
evening junt before dunk, with the in
tention of Kkatinjf a short distance up
the noble Kennebec, w hich glided di
rectly hef.'re the door The evening
wan tine and clour Tho new moon
peered from her lofty seal, und cant
her rays on the frosty pines that skirt
ed tho bore, until they seemed the
realisation of a fairy scene. All na
ture lay in a quiet which she some
times ciioses to annumo ; while water,
earth and air seemed to have sunkeu
into reposo.
1 bad gone up the river nearly two
miles, wben coming to a little stream
wbicb emjitiud into the larger, 1 turn
ed in to explore its course. Kir mid
hemlock ol a century e growth met
overheud, and formed au evergreen
archway, radiant with frost-woik.
All was dark within, but 1 was young
and fearloHN, und as 1 peered into the
unbroken forest that reared itself to
the borders of the stream, I lunched
in very jnyousness. 31 y wild hbrruh
rang through the woods, and I stood
listening to tbe echo that reverberutod
again and again, uulil it was hushed.
Occasionally night bird would flap
its wings Iron) some tall oak.
The mighty lords of the forest stood
as if not but time could bow them. 1
thought bow oft the Indian hunter
conceuled himself behind these very
trees how olt the arrow had pierced
the deer by this very Btreaiu, and
how olt its wild halloo had rung for
his victory. I watched the owls as
l hey fluttered by, until I almost fun
( ied myself one of them, and held my
lircalb to listen to their distant boot
ing. When suddenly a sound aroHo,
it seemed from the very ice Leueutli
my feel. It was loud and tremendous
at first, until it ended in one long yell.
I was appalled. .Never before had
fucb a nome met my ears. I thought
it more thuu mortal so fierce, and
amid such unbroken solitude, that it
seemed a fiend from hell had blon
an internal trumpet. Presently 1
neaid the twigs on the shore snup as
it from the tread of some animal, and
the blood rushed buck to my lorehead
with a bound that made my skin burn,
und I lelt relieved that 1 had to con
tend with things of earthly and not
i pirituul world,asItiifllaiicied. .My
energies returned, und I looked around
me tor some means of defense. Tho
moon shone through the opening by
which I had entered tho lore&t, and
considering this the best means of
escape, I darted towards it like an
arrow. "I was hardly a hundred yards
distuut, and the swallow could scarce
ly excel my dexporalo flight; yet as I
uir.ied my eyes to the shore, I could
see two dark objects dashing through
Hi underbrush at a pace Dearly
double that of my owu. By their
great speed, and the short yells which
they occasionally guvo, I knew at
once that they were tho much dreaded
grey wolf.
1 bad never met these animals, but
irurn the description given of them, 1
had but little pleasure in muking
their acquaintance. Their untamable
tiereeness and the untiring strength
which seems to be a part of thoir na
ture, render them objects of dread to
the benighted traveler.
"With their lung fallop, which run tir

they pursue their prey, and nought
hut death can separate them. The
hushes that skirted the shore flew past
with the velocity of light us 1 dashed
on in my flight. The outlet w as neatly
gained ; one second more and I w ould
iio comparatively sale, when my pnr
nicrs appeared on tho lank dirvoelv
i.bove me, which rose to the height ol
i otne ten feet There wa., no time for
i iiought ; 1 bent iny bend and dashed
n ildly forward. The wolves sprang,
lul miscalculating my speed, sprang
behind, whilo their intended prey gli
tied out into the. river.
Nature turned me towards heme.
The light flukes of snow spun from
tho iron of my skates, and 1 was now
some ditiatice from my pursuers,
when their fierce how 1 told mo that I
was again the fugitive. I did not look
back 1 did not feel sorry nor glud ;
one thought of tho bright, glad faces
awaiting mv return; of their tours if
they should never agnin seo mo, and
then every energy of mind and body
was exerted lor my escape. I wus
perfectly at home on the ice. Many
were the days 1 spent on my skates,
never thinking that ut one time they
would be my only moans of sufety.
Kvery hall minute an alternate yofp
from my pursuers mude me but too
eer'sin that they wore close ut my
heels. Nearer and neater thev came;
J heard their feel pattering on the ice,
nearer t.ill, until I limciod I could
ear their deep breathing. Every
nerve and muscle, in my frame was
stretched lo its utmost tension.
The trees olong the shore seemed
t dance in tho iiueortiiin li-ht, and
my bruin turned with my own breath-lc-s
speed ; yet 'ley termed to hiss
