Mr. Kobert IJoimei r-eomii dt-rttiiied
not merely to enjoy tlifntiKliict ion of
owning tlio most notable stnlilo in tho
world, but, in bin dedininir yuan,
which tire yet r long way oil', will bo
able proudly to exclaim tliut, witbont
tlio taint of gambling, or the excite
ment of racing, ho bus brought that
noblo animal, tlio horse, to n higher
Btato of porfoction, nnd has producod
from him greater aebiovemontu than
the most confirmed devotee ol the rare
track had ever previously dreamed of.
A few days ufo, that most remark
nblo horse, "Dexter," of Mr. Conner's
Btublo, at- the Fhion Course on Long
Inland, in tho presence of credible wit
nesses, trotted a mile in the unprece
dented timo of two minutes and four
teen seconds, and on yesterday trotted
one-quarter of a mile in thirty seconds,
or at the rate of one mile in two min
utes, equal to the fastoHt railway time.
It ie well known that Mr. Bonner
is not a racing man, arid" although lie
owns several of tho fastest trotters
in the world, and buys every really
fast horse he hears of, he tover aliowB
any oi his animals to trot for money,
or in an t race. lie buys and keeps
them for bis own amusement and sat
isfaction.
In June last he sent "Dexter" over
to tho Fashion course, to the stables
of Mr. William 11. Doblo, with luotruc.
tions to Mr. Doble to ascertain what
the horse was capable of performing.
Mr. !obIo at onco put the animal in
easy training, designing to work him
down to a trim for speed some time
in the full. No special pains were
taken, as there was ample time to
accomplish the training gradually
thus avoiding any possiblo charge of
cruel treatment. Iwice each week
be was put on the track and jogged
around live or six times, only occa
sionally being "speeded," and then
merely for a short distance, w ith no
record of timo. On other days nil bis
work has been done on the roud, be
being driven daily, at a jog trot, from
six to eitrlit miles. II is feed has con
sisted of from ten to twelve quarts of
grain daily, and as much bay as be
would eat. Ilia trainer remarked to
our reporter that ho wan a good feeder
on grain, but did noi care for nincb
hay. This cxercioe and feed, with the
usual rubbing and care in covering,
bedding, etc., has constituted bis train
ing, the design being to work him
down a little more vigorously as tlio
season advanced and the weather be
came more suitable to earnest exercise.
On Monday morning of last week
"Dexter" was taken out for bis morn
ing exercise on the track. The previ
ous day and evening had been stormy,
and the track was in any thing but a
good con Jit kin. Indeed, it was quite
heavy, and in places so wet along tho
polo fig to compel driving on tho off,
or outside. The horse, under tbeso
disadvantages, after being jogged
around once or twice was put to his
speed, and made the heat iu 2:20, with
bis hood on. bevoral gentlemen being
present., expressed a desire to Beo him
pressed a little, and Mr. Doble finally
consented. The horse was taken off
to the stable, Bcrapcd, rubbed off, and
in twenty-five minutes was again
bitched to his sulky and brought on
tho track, with Budd Doble as driver.
A running horse was also provided,
with a rider, and stationed at the
three-quarter polo to make tho round
with the trotter.
Mr. Turnbull, the well-known turf
man of this cit, owner of tho cele
brated horse, "Vandorbilt," and Mr.
Conway, of Philadelphia, took tho
judge's stand to wa'.ch tho perform
ance, and koop the time, livery thing
being ready,"Dcxter" was slowly trot
tod around tho track once. The sec
ond time around be was gradually
worked op and prcssod, until, on ap
proaching tho ihrcc-quarter polo, ho
was fairly flying. At this point, tho
running horse joined in as an incite
ment to the trotter. With this impet
us, added to bis natural ambition and
the steady, careful driving of liudd,
the wonderful animal came down to
his work in a maimer that surprised
even those that knew him best and
bad reason to cxpocl great things from
him. Coming down the homo stretch
bis speed was like a locomotive with
a team crowded. The running horse
was urged to his utmost to keep up
with hi in. As he passed the judge's
stand, the timo of the first quarter was
noted ut thirty-three and a half sec
onds, which bad been performed with
out a particle of urging. Away he
flew again on the first quarter, a sim
ple word of encouragement from his
driver only urging him forward, while
the rider of the ol her horse was shout
ing and plying the whip vigorously to
keep tip with this most astonishing
pace. At una race tne quarter polo
was passed in thirty -three and a half
seconds. Tho next quarter, on the
(melt stretch, was made in thirty-three
seconds, this part ol the track being
iu better condition than the rest. At
this tremendous pace the animal show
ed not the slightest inclination to
break ; indeed, throuirhout he kept
bis feet as steadily as if he knew of tio
other gait than an ordinary trot.
From the half-mile pole to the slart
ing point at the three-qimrter pole he
ft'omplit-hed in thirty fonr seconds,
the track being very heavy, on the
curve driving him to tho far sido,
making a difference of moro than a
hundred feet in tho distance to be
traveled. He thus made the mile in
two minutes and fourteen seconds a
rale of speed altogether unapprouched
in tho annals of trotting.
A Iter passing the three-quarter poR
which completed his bent of one mile,
"Dexter" continued on to the judgo's
stand withonl any apparent abat ement
of speed, and was not brought down
until ho had nearly reached tS quar
ter polo. Ho was then taken to the
Stable, exhibiting not the slightest
symptoms of distress. He bns ever
' since appeared in his tisnul health,
and with spirits only heiu4itoned by
tho exciting and wonderful perform
ance. Hut' even this most nrprislng'
achievement is not the best i'f this
remarkable homo. Yolorday he
on lb" truck, taking his usual Mcr
cini beiiitf leisurely driven around,
and wcBsionally put to speed for
short spirt, when lie made a quarter
almost incredihlo t'nio of thirty sco
onds, or at tho rato of one mile 11 ftro
miNufi s.
Mr. Doblo snys "Dexter" is now in

trim. Hut ho says tho animal has
abilities thut have never been suspect
