'Tlioro aro three dexinnteil laccs
where that business is tarried on ex
tensively : One iliico known us lien
nott's Tier, ten miles from ilill'urd;
another known as Big Stone, iiino
miles from .Mill'ord; and the others
known as Cedur and .Slaughter beach,
about seven miles from this jiluco.
Uonnett's Pier this year seems to bo
more frequented than the other two.
At this ilai'O there aro some hovoii or
eight large seme, measuring lrom l.iO
to 2;0 yards long, and from 12 to 15
deep, and each end ol the seino lias
about 5U0 yards of ropo attached to
it. Tho seino and rojie nro put into
a largo boat. Some three or four
men enter it, leaving amiflicicnt mini
ber of men on shore to manage one
end of tho ropo Tho ropo is let out
from tho boat as she leaves the shore,
to tho length of sumo 40U or 5U0 yards
Tho seine is then let out in a kind of
hulf-moon shape. Tho rope at the
other end is put out as the bout ro
tarns to shore Then four men ut tho
end of tho ropo haul tho seino in as
fust as possible. They walk along the
beuch as the seino drops along with
the tide, so as to keep squaro with it
It generally takes from two to five
hours 10 niuko a haul, owing to the
large quantity of fish landed. Some
times it takes longer to clear the seine
of fish than it does to muke the haul.
The hauls average from 5 10 500 bush
els. Some years ago we saw a seine
landed that was Bupposed by all to
have hud 1,000 bushels in it. The fish
range from 10 to 30 cents per bushel
on tho licach, and we have been in
formed that they have sold for three
cents pur bushel. These fish are gen
erally more abundant in tho months
of Ajiril May and June, and ubout the
last of October they disappear. The
fishermen are a hard working set of
men. Jt is often the case that they
fish all day in their wet clothes, and
scarcely stop to eat, when buyers are
plenty. Kach one strives to out do
the other, both in hauling and selling
after they land the fish. Sometimes
the competition is so great that tho
fish are sold for a mero song, l'crsons
come from a distance of 25 or SO miles
to buy fish on these shores, and some
carry away from 10 to 40 bushels. Wo
have seen on the beach atone time at
least 100 wagons waiting for the fish
to bo landed, and when tho seines land
they flock around them, fearful lest
they should not get thoirsupply. They
are earncu Home, and the most ot them
salted down lor winter use. Fresh
trout aro now selling in our market at
Wly cents per bushel."
