Some thirty-six telegrams which
Mr. Newton had sent from this cily

of. Ilutler, who coolly proceeded to
fpieslion them as to their import.
Mr. Newton, who was, of course, ex

had been influencing tho votes of
Senators for acijuittul, testified that
ho knew no Senators except those
who were very radical, and lie kncTr
nothing about money being paid to

he responded in the affirmative. There
had been subscribed in New York, he
said, 8100,000 for the President in
case of conviction, and 850,000 to de

acquittal. I his money was in the
hands of a highly respectable citizen
in New York, Mr. William G. Apple

evidot-.uo, which amounted to nothing
that Butler seemed to expect that it
would amount to.

But from the country generally the
demand for houses and places of busi

its nppry of people from some section

ways a great deal of money is thrown
into our market for real estate pur
