April has srarrried the winter land.

It It the lust fir gold, not gold itself,
That Is the root from which all evil rprinpj
. The soul's idolatry to wealth that brings
A multitude of curaea in its train;
When man gives hts best energies to gain
Shuts from his bvurt all better, nobler things,
And day by dav closer to Mammon clings,
Till honest' thrift d-generntes to pelf,
'Tis then tbe blessing, gold, becomes a snare
The root of evil, from whose fibres grow
Tbe tree ol misery, whose branches bear
The bitter fruits of wretchedness aod woe,
, Btrire. with all diligence to fill thy purse . .
But honestly, Irtt it should prove thy curse.
. - Egyptian Willeru .-,
Taking an early morning walk, I
ertmo upon a company of "Wailer,"
(rtbuut twenty women,) whose busi
hchh in to wuil tLo dead. They were
walking slowly, wearing black eilk
mantles- over their beads, their facet
muffled, tbeir two eyes only visible.
At that curly hour ibero were few
Jitmit in the street, and I heard their
liowling long before they came in sight.
To obtain an idea of it, get together
twenty of your female acquaintances
thc-ne who liaco tthnrp, nhrill voices
clothe them in Muck, muffle their faces,
Inak them pitch their voices on
biifb key, tell them to imitate the
liovvl of hyenas, the yawl of tom-cats,
the growling of young puppies, the
barking of wolves, the blare of calves,
and any other bowls or feminine
growlnj let one start it and the rest
loin in chorus, howling till out of
breath. Wbilo gaining strength for a
utw trial, let them laugh and chat to
gether, and then gire way to another
nneontroliiblo outburst of erief !
This is no modern custom, but old
as the pyramids. When Jacob died,
Jor-cph and his brethren and the Egyp
tians wept tor bun seventy days, and
when tliey went up to lluhroD to lay
bim in the cave at Machpelah, they
mourned at Atad "a very great and
eore Inmentatton" just such howling
as that described. It is contrary to
European ideas of grief,' but tbe
Oriental ia dramatic, and so he mourns
Willi lond howling.
The hired wailers recite the virtues
of the deceased, praising with extrav
agant eulogy. They praise much or
little, howl loud or soft, according to
tie amount oi lalihcah. But we
muHt retrain from calling the practice
uhsurd, lest wc tread on the toes of
those who in Christian lands some
tim- a mako a dumb show of grief by a
long procession ot empty carnages,
liut enough for to-day. Carlcton.
Anecdote of General Giunt. A
day or so ago I heard an anecdote of
Uvnoral (.rrrint, which I publish for the
benefit of the forty or fifty men who
are at present writing his biography,
and who want all the now materials
they can obtain. WJcri Mansfield
Luvell, afterwards a General iu the
Confederate army, was Street Cotn
miswiuner in this city, he says an i 11
ttiessed, battered looking man came
into lis office one day, and accosted
him by name. Lovcll did not recog
nize him, when the stranger remarked :
"WLy, I used to be at West Foint
with you. )"n't you remember Sam
Grant the lioys used to call me Uncle
Sam there?''
"Certainly I do, now that yon have
mentioned your name, liut what are
you doing here V i
"Well, I hardly know myself. I
know, however, that I'm dead broke
I want to borrow J 10 to get out of
this d a town, where they have the
worst whiskey and the most of it I've
aeen anywhere."
Lorell lent him the money; "and
the next thing I saw of .Sam Grant,
(I quote his own words,) was at the
head of tbe Yankee army."
