"SjOIOUS MISCELLANY.
Tlie devil elm U more eonl- throngh

other clmnnol.
Wisdom is un ocean that lias no
shoro. Its pronpret is not tnrminutod
by an horizon; its eentro in every
where, and its circumlcrcncc nowhoro.
It hns beon well suggested that
peoplo's excuses for neglecting duty,
are not generally their reasons for
such neglect. The excuso is, very
commonly, tho method of concealing
the true reason.
When a gentleman once remarked
in company how very liberally thoso
pernons talk of what their neighbors
should give away, who are leant apt
to give anything themselves, "All,
Sidnev Smith replied' "whon A sees B
struggling in distress, it is not in hu
man nature not to ask C to do some
thing for him."
The Happy Combination. There
la nolhinir purer than truth, nothing
sweeter than charity, nothing warmer
than love, nothing brighter than vir
tuc, nothing more steadfast than faith
These united in one mind form tho
purest, sweetest, richest, brightest,
holiest, and most enduring happiness.
A study of Paul's advice to the Phil
ippian Christian (Phil. iv. 8) will serve
to beget and strengthen theso graces
in the soul.
In your retirement make frequent
colloquies or short discoursings with
God and thy own soul. Every return
ol the heart to these intercourses is a
going to him, an appearing in bis pres
ence, and a representing his presence
to thy spirit and to thy necessity.
This was long since culled by a spirit
ual person "h building to God a chap
el in our heart." It reconciled Mar
tha's employment with Mary's devo
tion, charity and religion, tbe necessi
ties of our calling, and the employ
ment of devotion. For thus in the
niidst of the works ot your trade you
may retire into your chapel the
heart and converse with God by
frequent addresses and returns...
Recognition in Heaven. An old
minister, while one day pursuing his
studios, his wife being in the room,
was suddenly interrupted by her ask
ing him a question which has not
always been satisfactorily answered :
"Do you think we shall know each
other in Heaven V Without hesita
tion, he replied, "To be sure we shall ;
do you think we shall bo greater fools
there than we are here r Alter a lew
moments' pause, he again proceeded :
"But 1 may be a thousand years by
your side in Heaven without having
seen you ; for tho first thing which
will attract my notice when I arrive
there, will bo my dear Savior ; and I
cannot tell when I shall be for a mo
ment induced to look at any other
object."
Dr. Hugh Blair, the celebrated rhet
orician, and his colleague, Dr. Hub
ert Walker, were respectively the
moBt eloquent exponents of the theo
ries of works and grace of the essen
tial doctrines of Christianity. One
Sunday, Dr. Bluir, warming in his
presentation of his favorite theme,
thus apostrophized virtue."
"0 Virtue, if thou wert embodied,
all men would lovo thee I
Dr. Walker, in the afternoon, in
the courso of his sormon, rejoined as
follows :
"Virtue has been embodied. Did
all men love her? No; she was do-
Bpiscd and rejected of men, who, after
detaining, insulting and scourging her,
led her to Culvary, where they cruci
fied her between two thieves.
Instead of clutching to props, which
cannot elevate you, or if they do bear
you up lor a moment, must soon bo
withdrawn again, the gospel bids you
grow against the Tree of Life; and
just as yon grow into Christ, you will
grow up into holiness. And if you
have not yet found an object to your
heart's contont if you feel that there
is still something wrong with you
that j'ou are neither leading the
life which you would liko to lead, nor
enjoying the comfort which you think
might be some how got, be advised.
Take the Lord Jesus for your friend.
He is one in whom you will find no
flaw He is ono of whom, if you real
ly get acquainted with bim, yon will
never weary; and ono who, if once
you really go to bim, will ncvor
weary of you.
Tho Biblo is mainly of value to us
as it reveals to us a redeemer. That
preaching is the best that best exhib
its and recommends Christ Jesus.
Prayer is cflicacious in its highest do
gree when it is a means of reaching
Christ. Tho cup that is used at tbe
Congress Spring is only valuable as
an instrument for bringing tho water
to the thirsty lips, no matlor wheth
er it bo a rustic gourd or a silver
tankard : but the cup alone and emp
ty is a hollow mockery. So is preacli
' ing or prayer an empty cup unless it
brings Jesus to the needy soul. It is
not the cup tliHt saves but the water
it contains. Tho superstitious ritual
ist worships tho cup ; the fanatic who
despises all gospel ordinances flings it
away ; but the man who would be
saved must uso tho channel of mercy
whether it be tho Hiblo tho sermon
or the prayer for the inflowing of
Christ Jesus into his soul.
That terrible saying of Annie of
Austria to Pichilieu holds true for
mercy as well as (of judgment: "My
lord cardinal. God docs not pay at the
end of every week, but nt last he
pays" God may put his (aitliful ones
upon a long and faithful apprentice
ship, during which they learn much
and receive litllo food only, and
"thnt in a measure" often tho bread
and water of afiliction. Yot at lost
ho psys, pays them into their hearts,
pays theiu into their bonds also. We
may remember long seasons of faint
yot honest endeavor; the prayers of
a soul yet without stiength; the sac
rifices of an Imperfectly subdued will,
bound even with tho cords to the al
tar; we may remember soch times or
we may forgot them, but their result
is with us. Some of the good seed
sown in tears is now shedding n heav
enly fragrance with our lives, and
