RELIGIOUS MISCEIIANY.
In mVinj:oiirrrnngompnU tolive,
we should never forget tltnt wo Iihvo
also to die.
In wrought praror, that lialh
jviril, corrieth nil before It, ; nothing
can bind or hold it from prcvniling.
Beware or PklaT. To-morrow
roay never oomo to us. We do not
life in to-morrow. We mnnot find it
in any of our title-deed. Tho man
who owns whole Mocks of real eHtate,
and great ships on the eea, doet not
own a minute of to-morrow. To-morrow
I It is a mysterious poceibility,
not yet born. It lies under tho seal
of midnight behind the veil of con
foliations. In a world whoso friendships are
o fickle and transient, how sweet
to know that there is proffered us
friendship which is true, unchange
able and etornnl ; true, for ho who
makes this declaration ot friendship
i the Truth and the Amen; unchange
able, for Jesus Christ is the same yes
terday, to-day and forever ; eternal,
for he, like the love wherewith he
loves us, is everlasting.
A man in a blonse once said : "I
have no more influence than a farth
ing rushlight." "Well," was the re
ply, "a tarthing rushlight can do a
pood deal ; it can sot a haj'stack on
fire ; it can burn down a house yea
more, it will enable a poor creature to
read a chapter in God's book. Go
your wa), friend ; let yonr farthing
rushlight so shine before men, so that
others, seeing yonr good, may glorify
your Father which is in heaven."
t Art thougrowingin spirituality and
holiness amidstan increase of tempor
al prosperity T Fear not. That pros-
Jerity cannot harm thee while the
ove of Christ is supreme in thy soul.
Art thou cold and lifeless in heavenly
things, but alert and eager In earthly
things f Then tremble. God will
take from thee that worldly good
which holds back thy heart from him,
or leave it to work out thy perdition.
Take away from the sum of our
knowlodgo tho truth revealed to us
by Jesus Christ, and how little re
mains 1 Immortality, eternal lift, the
forgiveness of sins, the ultimate over
throw of sin and Satan, and the estab
lishment of an universal and eternal
kingdom of righteousness and peace
all that has made us what we are, and
given us a good hopo of joys to come
have been made known to us as the
confidants of our Saviour friend.
The careless and inactive disciple
of Christ cannot live a day, cannot
move or even look in any direction
without encountering some duty that
will try his character and show what
he is. Every call of benevolence, ev
ery snmmonsto prayer, everydemand
for effort, every church boll, every
invitation to social devotion, every
lost soul which God puts in his way,
is A r-nnilln in thohnnd of tlin Snart hpr
of hearts, flashing on the darkness of
liis religious life, and disclosing its
barrenness.
. There is a joy in devoted piety, com
pared with which all earthly delights
are dross and emptiness. lie who
lives in a state of habitual nearness to
Christ has a pence which no worldlv
fountain can supply peace with God,
peace with himsolr, peace in trouble
peace in death peace which, flowing
from heaven, la to him the pledgoand
foretaste or eternal bliss. ihe smile
'of tho Saviour rests ever upon him,
shedding a sweet radiance through
his soul, in toil and conflict, and crow
ing clearer and fuller till he reaches
the heatifio vision and gar.es on the
unveiled face ot his Liord.
The cloud is over me to-day, hnt
tho sun will soon shino forth I shall
yet praise him. The battle is very
fierce.aud the toes are very numerous,
but the victory will soon be won
I shall yet praiso him. This wilder
ness is a barren and wcaty reeion,
yet Caannn is yonder, and but a littlo
while and I shnll roach it I shall vet
praiso him. Yes, and now, during the
night of weeping, I will hopo in tho
Lord and praiso him now, while the
dark cloud Is hanging over me, I will
praise him ; now, while tho wild storm
is beating upon me, I will praise him;
Yes, now, whilo we are journeying
along J through this dreary wilder
ness, wo will praiso him.
Let us bless God for one of the
most mysterious passages in tho Sa
viour's lifo. I know nothing so mys
tcrions ns that bitter cry on tho cross :
'My God 1 My God ! why hast thou
forsaken mef" That Jesus, tbo Di
vino Saviour, should ntter a cry ex
pressive of being forsaken by God, his
father! Oh, there is a mystery about
ft which wo rannot fathom, but there
is a depth of comfort in it. Let us
bathe in that depth of comfort. Are
there some here who know what it is
to feel this gloom and heaviness, this
fearful depression and sense of deser
tion f Jesus foil it; and if ho felt it,
and was God's well beloved Ron, you
may be God's sons and daughters
his most dear and precious children.
Though for a season you may be in
heaviness, still call him "my God."
You may feel sometimes as if he had
fbrsaken yon, but as the Saviour did,
so do you call upon him as your God.
i Dr. Arnold snys : "Many an unwise
parent laborshnrdand lives sparingly
all his lifo, for the purpose of loaving
enough to give his children a start in
the world, as it is culled. Setting a
young man afloat with tho money left
him by hisrclutives,isliko tying blad-
'0rs under tho arms of one who can
not swim ; ten clinnces to one he will
. lose his bluddcrsaiid goto the bottom.
Teach him to swim and ho will never
need the dluddera. Give your child a
sound education, and you have done
enough for him. See to it that his
morals are pure, his mind cultivated,
and his whole nature made subservi
ent to the laws which govern men,
and you have given him whnt will be
or more valuo than the wealth of the
' Indies. To be thrown upon one's re
sources, is to be cast into the vory
lap of fortune, for our faculties then
undergo a development, and display
an energy of which they were previ
ously uufcupceptihle.
