ho is a drunkard. Tho lliblo recom
mend liberality but not prodigality.
It! tells men to "communicate." but
not to throw away. It urges tli 9 du
ty of distributing to tho necessities of
saints, but not ot contributing to the
indolence and bad habits of besotted
sinners.
IIVMNH AND CHILDREN. Wo BUS-
pect that it is the teachers that arc
tired of hearing the same hymns, not
, the children. Many of the common
Sunday school hymns are exquisitely
beautiful, and can never fail to have
beneficial ctl'ect. If they ure linked
with ono tunc, and with that alone,
they will becomo favorites for life ;
and even if they are not firstrate in
point of poetic merit, somehow they
got deep down into the heart, and re
main with us forever. Hymns pro
ducing such an effect cannot become
stale to Sunday school scholars, who
attond the school only for eight or
nine years at the utmoat, and gener
ally lor a much shorter period. At
the same time, we have no objections
to new hymns being made. The Sun
day school teacher will examine thone
and by and by some of them may be
come as great favorites as tho old.
Silver Tongt'E. When I was a
boy, I and a number of my playmates
had rambled through the iiulds and
woods till, quite forgetting tho fading
light, we found ourselves far lrora
home. Indeed we hod lost our way.
It did so happen that wo wore nearer
home than we thought ; but how to
get to it was the question, lly the
edge of the field wo saw a man com
ing along and we ran to ask him to
tell us. Whether he was in trouble
or not I do not know, but he gavo us
Bomo very surly answers. Just thon
there came alouj another man, a near
neighbor, with a merry emilo on his
face. "Jim," said he, "a man's tongue
is like that of a cat. It is either a
piece of velvet or a piece of Band pa
per just as ho likes to use it or makes
it; and I declare you always use your
tonguo liko Band paper. Try tho vel
vet, man, try tho velvet principle."
This was said to tho surly man, but I
have always remembered it.
Drinking is thesimplest of all phys
ical proccbHcs. Ono has but to open
his lips and swallow the couteuts of
j-onder brimming cud that is handed
from tho spriug. The infant drinks
in its nourishment as its first instinc
tivo act. Christ likens tho soul's re
ception of himself to tho simple ele
mentary process, lie says, ''Jf any
man thirsts let nun come unto mo and
drink." Tho gospel plan of salvction
is tho simplest and plainest nothotl
possible It somo great thing were
demanded of every one who would
bo saved somo prodigious exercise
ot tue intellect or bomb lurtro expert
diture ot timo, money or brain power
then multitudes might find a good
excuse for rejecting the gospel, llut
it is just like our blessed Suviour to
make his terms of acceptance so Bim
pie that a child can understand and
receivo them. "Go and wash," said
the prophet to tho Syrian leper; X&
amun went, washed and was cleansed
"Come to me and drink," says the
loving Kodeemcr; and, oh I why is it
that a siDgle Burner thirsting for life
can stay away.
Much of what is called religion has
no roots. Jt is set up and propped,
or. it may be inserted in tho soil, but
it is not planted. Jt is liko tho twigs
wuicn in our childhood we took, and
with gleeful delight put in our mimic
gardens, but wlncli never grew. A
trco is never truly planted if it be
dead. You can no more be said to
plant a dead trco than a stone pillar.
Tho pillar may bo as deeply and as
firmly fixed in tlio earth as tho tree,
but no ono would speak of it as plan
ted. It was in no sympathy with the
Boil. It is held up by mochanical
prcssuro and constraint. A treo is
novcr planted except it is living and
establishes vital aflinity with tho soil.
When its roots begin to send forth its
tender fibres, and they suck in their
appropriate nutriment from the moil
and transmit it through trunk and
branch and twig, then it is planted.
It has taken hold of tho earth, and
thercforo it lives ; but when the earth
takes hold of it. and tho treo does not
roturn the friendly grasp, it is dead.
And when it is uoad tho soil which
once fed its lifo rots it, just as tho at
mosphere, which is our vital air while
wo tiro living, will hasten the putre
fuution of our bodies as soon as our
Jast breath is drawn.
SMoTnttiF.n. In a recent sormon,
Jlov. Henry Ward Becchcr having as
aured his hearers that they should get
wordly goods and uso them for Christ
peaks of their danger if successful in
businoss: .Now many of you aro in
imminent peril. Hod is multiplying
tho sources of your pow er. Your re
sources ore becoming numerous as
Bands of tho sea. 1 am sorry; 1 am
glad ; but I am anxious that you
should riso up in the midst of these
things, and phow yourselves greater
than prosperity, and stronger and
better on account of it. 1 dread to
seo a man smothered under his wealth.
When a man, driving from the mead
ow, sits and singj cheorily upon his
vast load of fragrant hay, how every
ono looking npon him thinks of his
happiness und content. But, by-ami-by,
at an unlucky jog, down goes the
W heel, and over goes tho load, and the
man is at tho bottom, with all the hay
on him. And now ho cannot halloo
bo that you can hear him. And i(
Bomchody docs not extricate him be
will be smothered. Just in that way
rich mon nro in danger of being 6inolh
crod. Tho wholo wain of your pros
perity may capsize, and tnc superin
cumbent mass may hide you from tho
air nnd inn of a true lift-.
