' William M. McCtillongh, Esq., was
last week sworn in, a second time, as
District Attorney. Tho officers elect
ed last fall aro now all sworn and in
the active discharge of their duties.
Another Member added to the
Family. Our young friend A. W,
"Walters, was, last Court, admitted to
the Bar, and is now ready to practice
law in the several Courts of this coun

ArriAL. The owners and agents

general appeal will bo held at the

A Soobt Stat. Tho party convict
ed of perjury at our late terra of Court,
and conveyed to the Penitentiary last
week, with three other members of that
house, rctumod home nearly as soon
as tho Shoriff. The "shyster" and
army "bummer" at Hamburg, who
draws the salary of Governor, pardon
ed him because ho was a Black Repub
lican. And in doing so he has violated
very attribute belonging to an Exec
utive officer. His own instructions
nd proclamation issued on the 31st
of January last, he has trampled under
his feet, as well as the law relating to
tho horrible crime of perjury. We
will next week, publish the instructions
and proclamation above alluded to.
Tne Bill. Ve have often been
interrogated as to the actual cost
incurred by the county in the trial
and execution ol Lena Miller. Du
ring the Auditors' settlement we
passed over tho books, and find that
the sums paid out of tho county
Treasury were about as follows :
Doctors' bill 11,350 00
Lawyers' bill, 737 00
Coroner and Constables, . 290 00
Jury and their board, . . 340 00
Witnesses and their fees, . 690 00
Prisoner's buard & clothing, 328 00
Cost of execution, ia, . . 290 00
Total, $1,025 00
The above is as near tho amount
paid out as can now bo ascertained,
but is only about half tho real expense
incurred, as tho detention of other
business was very expensive to the
citizens of tho county.
A few Lights sinco some dogs got
among tho flock of sheep belonging
to Nelson Ely, of East Finley Town
ship, Washington County, and killed
ibirty-two of them. On the same
tfight the flock of Joshua CoflSeld, in
ibe same neighborhood, wns visited
! y another set of etininoaj, and twen-4y-nino
wero killed. Tho dogs that
a (.tacked Mr. Ely's were caught and
exterminated.
A Radical morning paper has a
very touching editorial on tho famine
a "Northern Africa but wo do not

editor is affocted at the starvation

Mr. Edwin M. Stanton continues to
hold seerot conferences At the War
Department with his Radical friends

them visit him every duy, and the

There is n certain portion of tho
War that will never go into tho regu
lar histories, nr l-f embodied in ro
mance or poetry, wliiih is a very re
al part ol it, and will, if preserved,
convey to succeeding ucnerations a
better idea of tho spirit of the conflict
thun many dry reports or careful nar
ratives of events, and this part may
be called tho gosxip, the fun, the pathos
of the War. This illustrate tho char
acter of tho leaders, the humor of the
soldiers, tho devotion of women, tho
bravery of men, tho pluck of our he
roes, the romance and hardships
of tho service. From tho beginning
of tho war, tho author has bon en
gaged in collecting all the anecdotes
COnnociea Wlin or niuBiruiivu ui u,
and has grouped and classified thorn
under appropriulo head, and in a very
attractive form.
The volume is profusely illustrated
with over 100 fine engravings, by the
first artists, and its contents include
reminisconces of camp, picket, spy,
scout, bivouac, siego and battle new,
with thrillinc feats of bravery, wit,
drollery, comical and ludicrous adven
tures, etc, etc.
Amusement as well as instruction
may bo found in every page, as graph
ic detail, brilliant wit, and authentic
history, aro skillfully interwoven in
this work ot literary art.
It is just such a volumo as will find
numerous purchasers, and just sucn a
one as persons seeking to act as book
agents should add to their list.
