    RELIGIOUS MISCELLANY,
I'R Sattkdat NniiiT.
Chafed and worn wilh mm Idly eara,
Hwetlly, Lord, my h.-art prepare
HH thit luweid tempest ovate i 1 ''
Jettie, come and whopcr peace t
Ilti.h the whirlwind of my will,
Willi thyself my fiinl llii:
Knd in calm this lui"' fffk,
Let the Sabbath gentiy break !
Bevcr, Lord, three eartldv tics.
Vein mv soul lo th- would tin;
iHsentangle me from lime,
Lift in tl purer dime i
kwt ire caul eey my ld,
I,et me now ilmw nigh to (Jod ;
vtenlly, luring Jesus, speak,
fcnd m ealui ibis bu.y week!
Pn the curtain of repute
Wbile my weary eyelids close;
Htenl Diy iirit wbile 1 rest,
(live Hie dreiiiuiiiirii pure and blest I
Raise me with a chwrlul heart ;
Holy (jhust, tliv.lf impiirt !
Then the SuliLalb diiy a ill be
Heaven brought down lo earth and me.
So long as you hoc one star in tho
sky, tho sun is not risen; bo lone; ns
one leak admits tho witter, tho ship is
not safe ; so long ns ono sin reigns in
a man's heart ami is practiced in his
lil'o, Jesus is neither his Savior nor
his King.
, Repentance. False repontencohas
prief of mind and humiliation only
'tor great and glaring oilocencc?, until
it supposes pardon i'or these offences
obtained. Truo repentance is a con
tinued war against Bin, a permanent
inward shamo i'or its defilement till
death sounds a retreat. Venn.
If there bo any of you that have
had such a sense of tho awfulncHS of
religion, let nie uslc you, Did you ever
think of the uwi'iiIiichh of not having
it? If you have felt that to live u
Christian life was such u tremendous
thing, did you ever relied that not to
do it was a thousand times more tre
mendous? "Come." I verily think there is not
a sweeter word in the Bible than the
word "come." I am sure that w hen
it fell from the lips ol Jesus, when the
Spirit and the liible uttered it, when
it was echoed by tho tongues of apos
tles and saints, and, in all these curies,
was addressed to the weary and heavy
laden to those who were uthirst with
spiritual needs it was bo full of grace
and truth that it could not be exceed
ed iu preciousniss by any word from
human speech. And this word ''come'1
is the key-note of ihc gospel. "Come,"
with whatever thirst you faint; "come
and drink ; come and take the water
of life freely."
Moral Force. The iron of iron,
the fno of iiie, tho ctlicr and source
of all elements, is moral force. Wo
delight to trace these powers. Meth
od, patienco, self-trust, perseverance,
love, desiro of knowledgo, rower ol
persistence, of enduring defeat, of
gaining victor- ty defeat, these are
forces which never lose their charm.
Even in war which is organized
brute I'oree moral power is eminont.
Good ammunition und good muskets
wo must have : but these do not cam
tho battle. You may have a moun
tain ol iron, every pebble a slug it is
all in vain without the brave hands
to use, the cool head to command, tho
good cause which fires every brain in
tho service.
All moral truth comes to us with an
imperative demand for the submission
of the will. It asks not morcly to be
recognized, to he respected, or even
to bo accepted by the mind, but to be
made tho law ol tho life. 1 he char
actor of God, the person and the saving
worn ol Lhrist, tiio treasures ol wis
dom and grace in the gospol, are not
to be treated as a mere spectaclo to
be gazed at with interest or applause.
curisi is moro inan an ooject ol per
ception, or a themo for admiration
lie cluims to bo obeyed and trusted
in. Tho submission of tho mind to
his teachings, and of tho will to his
commands, mid tho response of affec
tionate cotitideneo to his promises, are
all included in tho fulfillment of the
one word, Believe. Until the springs
of motive aro reached, so that what
we call our faith is really the prevail
ing impulso of the life, we are yet in
our sins.
The Cross Before tite Crown.
The wny to tho crown is by the crows
We must taste the gall if we are to
taste the glory. It justified by faith,
we must suffer tribulations. When
God saves a soul, ho tries it. Some
believers are much surprised when
they are called to suffer. They thought
they would do some great thing fur
oou ; cm ail lie permits t!iem to do is
to suffer for his sake, do round to
every one in glory : rmli has a differ
ent story to tell, yet every one a talc
of suffering. But mark, all were
brought out of them. t was a dark
cloud, but it passed away. The water
was deep, but they reached the other
side. 'ot ono there blames God for
the wny he led them thither. "Salva
tion J" is their only cry. Child of
iron, murmur riot at your lot. You
miiHt have a palm ns well ns a white
robe. Lcnrn to glory in tribulations
also.
.Rrxinina is Bi sixers. The North
British JicvirlP says: "The pressing
need of our faith is not simply fujii
ful evangelists to proclaim its doctrines
but legions of men consecrating their
worldly vocations, witnessing to that
truth on which so much skepticism
prevailn, that Christianity, so received
as to become tin integral part of man,
is omnipotent to keep him from evil,
not by taking him out of the world,
but by making him victorious over it.
Ho is a most worthy disciple of Christ
who, like l'allispy, or Buxton, orBud
gett, or Bcrthcs, exhibits religion as
tho right uso of a man's ow n self as
the one thing which gives dignity and
nubility to what is in itself sordid'and
turtiiU as the mainspring of earnest
mid successful strivings after loftier
ends and a purer life as the power,
ontsido of and within man, which,
lilting lip conduct in tho individual,
raises, tho community nnd not as a
state of mind mystical, and in active
life uimtiainable, high up among
things intangible, separated from con
tact with work a day lit, appropriate
to Sabbath days and special hours, to
leisure, old age and death-beds. Ev
ery man who is "ililligent in business
ncrvinir the Lord." is a Bermon brim
ful of tho energies of life und truth, a
witness to tho comprehensiveness and
adaptability of Christ's religion, a
preacher of righteousness in scenes
where none can preach so effectively
or so well.
