BucTit'ia and Tri'k. In an arti
cle in Frazer'n Magazine litis beauti
ful but brief extinct occurs: "Educa
tion docs not fommenco with the al
phabet. It begins with o mother's
look with a futhcr's smilo of appro
bation or sign ol" reproof with n sis
ter's gentle pressure of the hand, or a
brother's noblo act of forbearance
with bird's nests admired and not
tiuched with crec?in nuts and nL
most impossible emmets with hum
ming bees and great beo-hives with
pleasant wulks and shady lanos, and
with thouelits directed ill sweet and
kindly tones and words to mature to
acts of benevolence, to deeds of vir
tue, and to the source of all good to
God.
Os Tin Safe Sidk. A lady in New
York, wanting to engage a coachman
put an advertisement in the paper tel
ling those who would like the place
to cull at her bouse. At the proper
time she found halt' ti dozen men wait
ing to see her. How was she to de
cide which of them would make the
beat coachman ? She had a plan of
her own. Turning to them, one by
one she asked : "llow near to the
edgo of a steep precipicecan you drive
my carriage with safety? One of
them said he would venture within a
foot ; another within eight inches ;
another four inches ; but the lust one
answered bolter: "In truth, tnndam,
I'd keen as far otT as ever I could."
This was the man that she wanfed to
find, and phe engaged him at onco.
Jly young friend, how near can you
safely como to doin wrong ? Will it
not bo butter to keep as far offas yoa

Eight thinking is unquestionably
tho right road to right living. Com
prehensively viewed, men are as their
beliefs are. With many exceptions
and limitations, thegeneral truth is to
be excepted, Nevertheless, right
thinking is fundamental. It is as val
uable as truth ; and anything that in
validates the correctness of belief, di
rectly or indirectly, invalidates truth
itself, which is the foundation of hu
man afl'uirs and is tho very path along
which men are to walk. Not that I
think right living and right thinking
are poor things, but they show that
tho church has not yet got np tho
highest things in Christ's life. The
ideal of life is having tho thought
right, living right, "I love tho world
though it is my enemy," onto suffer
ing and death, tho iiower of right
tin, iking and right living disclosing
itself in a nobler lifo.
It is a great part of the communion
of saints, to join together in God's
praises. There is a communion of
sinners, wherein they combine togeth
er to dishonor God, and encourage
ono another in evil. Eve was no
sooner caught borsoll'lhan alio became
a kind of serpent to deceive and catch
her husband. A tempter had no soon
er inado a sinner but the sinner
becamo a tempter. As, therefore,
God's enemies hold communion to
dishonor hiin, so great reason there is
that bis servants should hold commu
nion to pmise him, nnd to animate
and hearten ono another unto duty,
us men that draw on an anchor,
and soldiers that set upon a ser
vice used to do with mutual encour
agements. The holy oil of tho sanc
tuary was made with many spices,
compounded by the art of the perfu
mer ; to noto unto us, that those du
ties aro sweetest which are made up
in a communion of saints, each one
contributing his influence and furth
erance unto them, us in winds and
rivers wlu:ro they meet in one they
aro strongest ; and in chains and jew
els, where many links ure joined in
one, they are richest.
Ttis Religion of the Hat. A co
temporaiy, the Episcopalian, has a
low o.iniin ol tho hall-hearted roligion
which is so popular with munyinuur
day, requiring little self-denial oree)
arution from tho world. These words
aro earnest and worthy of being
heeded ;
The religion of the day Is an easy
minded re igion, without conflict and
wrestling, without self denial und sac
viilcej a religion which knows noth
ing ol l!ic pangs of the new birth, as
its coiiimeiiiviiu'i.t,aiul nothing of the
lit'. ulniL'uio Willi flush and the
devil, day by clay, making us long for
resurrection, deliverance, lor the bind
ingof thoadversary and for the LorJ's
return. It is a second rate religion
a religion in which there is no lare
lies, no grandeur, no potency, no no
ble niindudneiw, no elevation, no cell'
dovolcdnchs, no nil constraining love
It is a hollow religion, with a l'uir ex
terior, but nn aching heart a heart
unsatisfied, a soul not at rest, a con
science not nt peace with God ; a reli
gion marked, it may be by activity
und excitement, but hetiaying all the
time consciousness of a wound hidden
and unhealed within, nnd hence umi
blo to animate t J lofty doings, or sup
ply the strength needed for such do
lugs. It is a jcible religion lucking
the sinews nnd bouos of hardier times
very different from tho indomitable
much enduring, storm braving reli
gion, not merely of upostolic duvs,
bat even of lue Kefoi'innlion. Il is
an uncertain religion j that is to sny,
il is not rooted to certainty, it is nol
tho outflowing ot a soul insured of
pardon, and rejoicing in the filial ro
tation.diip between il mid God. llonce
thore is no liberty of service, for the
question of personal acceptance is
still an unscttlo thing, thoro is a
workingtf pardon, but notrom par
don. All this is bondage, heaviness,
irksomeress. There is a speakingfor
God, but il is with a faltering tongue,
there It laboring for God, but it is with
tailoring hands; thero is a moving in
tho way of 11 is coin mundmcnls, but it
is with a heavy drag upon our limbs.
'Hence tho iiicllicient, uninfl lenliiil
character of our religion. It does not
tell on others, for it has not yet fully
told upon ouoelvcs. It fulls short of
its mark,' for the arm thatdrow the
bow it psrrlytsd.
