Since that timo mncb unnecessary talk and excitement has prevailed in our town over tho sub ject, and with less practical sense than is usually exhibited by our den- irons. The qnootion of locating the depot was always with the railroad company; and tho reason they loca ted it as staled, was that it was the best and cheapest location for them. The ground aecured from Mr. Col burn and Mr. Shaw is 100 by 1000. feet, besides ground enough on the East side of the road to build an engine houne and a -turn table. To have located it at or nbovo Cherry street, on Mr. Cuttle's plat, was too unrea sonable. Tho company refused lo take ground disconnected, and with out this the quantity could not have been secured here. And ai'ttin, if located here, one of two things be came necessary : 1 ho road would have passed np Third street with a deep cut, or tho depot grounds filled from five to eight feot, and tho dirt carted half a mile. This was an oxponsfi that the company would not incur; nor did the citizens wish to pa- hand omely for digging a fivo-foot ditch for thrco or four squares alon tho street. Tho following objections presented themselves in attempting to locate it on tho Lcavy estate : 1st. It was be yond tho bounds ot tho written con tract, and if so located would have invalidated cvtry dollar ol tho snb cription to tho road; and, 2d, tho company would take no gronnd with out the titlo was at onco vested in tlirm which, according to the Will of Mr. Lcavy, could not be done for a numlior of yenrs.
