for selling liquor on Sunday and to

Good Templar on the grand jury, who
led off in several "hefty" speeches
against indicting him, for these small
offences, and finally, after "setting up"

especially these new lights.
Ready fob Travel. The new State
road from the Sinncniahoning road to
the turnpiko west of Horn's thni.ty,
we are pleased to stats, is now ready
fortruel. This new location avoids
Moose hill, and the ei'inmit is gained
north of tho old shanty before one is
aware cf it, while tho distance U less
than one half mile greater. Those
who have ascended aud descended
this enormous hill cn the old road eo
frequently will bo surprised, when
tl;uy puss over the new location, to
see bow easily the hill has been gain
ed. Both the managers anJ the con
tractor ore entitled to praise for the
prompt manner in which they have
completed tb:h work, and our Lnion
township friends, and t'aose west of
that section, who have for years
dreaded Moose hill, will not be slow
in awarding them proper praise. This
will le au excellont "winter road,"
not liable to drift, and located on the
north side of the mountain. The new
road strikes the old nearly one mile
west of tho shanty, and is just nine
miles from Clearfield. This makes the
distance from Clearfield to Arnold's
mill, in Union township, 12J miles,
uud to Luthersburg 16 miles. A
two horse team will move" eastward,
over the new portion of this road,
2,000 feet of lumber with ease.
Local Improvements. We are
pleased to know that our town is
beginning to develop itself commen
surate with its capital and the energy
of its business men. After having
laiu dormant for noarly a quarter of
a century, the villagers have at last
been awakenod. Our population has
increased largely during the past
six months, and would have nearly
doubled had thero beco bouses and
buildings to shelter tho population.
Much has been done to accomplish
this object, but much more remains
to be done. Two fine churches, which
will cost the citizens at least 875,000
when finished, are fast approaching
completion. This amount of capital,
in our view, should have been invested
in a good hotel and a steam saw null,
which would have added largely to
the prosperity of the town, while
religion could still have flourished in
the ld churches. We should have
started the machine in this manner,
vir: Build the railroad, large hotel,
;!! r4 tiloninif mill.
fifty dwelling houses, one or two good
school bouses, and then as many
churches as convenient; after which
the streets should be graded and
paved .
; While we are compelled to condemn
J the major portion of the programmo
adopted by our capitulixtH, we must
not forget to state that .Messrs.
' Hoops, Wearer & Co. have made a
j fluuk movement, and are adopting a
portion of our programme. They
have purchased tho steam planing
mill formerly owned by Mr. Spack
