Little Things. Groat virtues are
rare ; the occasions for them are very
rare, and whon they do occur, we are
prepared for them ; we are excited by
the grandeur of the sacrifice ; we are
supported either by the splendor of
tho deed in the eyes of the world, or
by the aulf-oomplauenoy that we expo
rience from tho performance of an un
common action. Little things are un
forsoon; they return evory moment ;
they come in contact with our prido,
our indolence, our haughtiness, our
readiness to take ofleuce ; they con
tradict our inclinations perpetually.
It is, however, oiily by fidelity in lit
tle things that a true and constant
love to God can be distinguished from
a passing lervor ot fpint.
Charitable Judgment. The fol
lowlntf words from a sormon of Laor
in deserve to be committed to memo
ry as a guide to a juBt and charitable
Judgment or tlie character of others
In order to judge properly of a
. crime and a criminal, we must exam
ine the power of the temptations to
which be was exposed j the opportu
nities given him to avoid it; the force
of bis natural constitution : the mo
tives which animated him ; the resist
ance lie made ; the virtues he prac
ticed; the talents God cave him; the
cuutnuuD no nan ; wnat Knowledge
he bad acquired; what remorse he
felt. It must be examined whether be
was soduced by ignorance; whether
he was allured by example; whether
he yielded through weakness j wheth
er dissipation or obstinacy, malice or
contempt oi uod ana his law confirm
ed him in sin.
A Sermon to a Treacher. Never
hall I forget the remark of a learned
legal mend, who was at one time
somewhat skeptical in bis views.
Said he to ine : "Did I believe as you
do, that the masses of onr race are
rcrishing in sin, I could have no rest.
1 wonld fly to tell tbom of salvation.
I would labor dav and niirht. I
would speuk v.-ilh all the energy and
pathos I conld summon. I would
warn and entreat my fellow-men to
turn unto Christ, and receive salva
tion at bis bands. I am astonished
at the manner in which the majority
vi you ministers leu your message.
Why, you donot act as if you believed
your own words. You have not the
earnestness in preaching that we
lawyers have in pleading. If we
were as tame as you aro, we would
not gain a single suit."
A decade of years has passed away
since that remark was made. I bless
God it was addressed to me. It put
fire in my bones which I hope will
burn as long as I live. God preached
a stirring sermon to me that day by
the mouth of that infidel lawyer.
Error, Faith and;Experiincc It
cannot be necessary for us in the
present day to stand and say that a
man is not saved by the form of what
be believes. It is more important
for us to assert that ncith&is a man
saved by what ho disbolicves. When
you have unmade the intellectual
foundation of a hundred creeds, you
have made no church for yourself.
When your newer or nicer logic has
overturned the fallacies of no matter
Tjhat council or cannon, you havo yet
not given man a guide for faith or an
example lor nie. If you try to do
this, you will find that the ground of
