It costs something to be a true
Christian. To bo a mere nominal
Christian, and go to church, is cheap
and easy work. But to hear Christ's
voice, and follow Christ, and believe
in Christ, and confoss Christ, requires
much self denial. It will cost us our
sins, and our Belf-righteousness, and
our ease, and our worldlincss.
- An hypocrito comes hardlior to
lieaveu than a gros9 sinner, and hath
far more obstacles. As ho that must
be stripped is not so soon clothed as
be that is naked, and as he climbs not
a tree bo soon that must first come
. down from the top of another tree
where he is porchea, so it is bere.
A Brief Sermon. A Rochester
clergyman made the following re
niarks in the pulpit on a Sunday
morning.
"I am informed that a lady who at
tonded a funeral in this church last
Sunday, lost in this house as she thinks
a, valuable breastpin. The article is
valued at riB much as five hundred
dollars, it is suid. I hope thut the
latter is not a member of this congre
gation ; and that if any one of you
should be tho owner of such costly
jewelry, it would not bo worn when
you come to the house of God on the
Sabbath, but that all would adorn
themselves for such occasions in a
meek and quiet spirit. If any one
has found the lost jowel, they uro re
quested to loavo it with the sexton."
Who Mape all That! It is re
lated that when Napoleon Bonaparte
was returning to France from the ex
pedition to Egypt, a group of French
officers entered into a discussion con
cerning the existence of a Uod. They
were on the deck of the vessel that
bore them over tho Mediterranean
' Sea. Thoroughly imbued with tho
infidel and atheistic spirit of the times,
they were unanimous in the doniul of
tins truth.
It was at length proposed to ask
the opinion of Napoleon on the ques
tion, who wase'tanding alone wrapped
up in silent thought. On hearing tho
question, is there a God f he raised his
hand and pointing to tho starry firm
ament simply respotidcd'Ucntleinan,
who made all that!"'
How to Avoid Calmnt. "If any
one epeiika ill of thee," said Epictetus,
"consider whether ho has truth on
his side, and if so reform thyself, thut
bis censures may not adeel thco."
' When Aximandrr was told that the
. very boys laughed at his singing, "Ah
said he, "then I must learn to sing
better." l'lato being told that he had
many onemics that spoko ill of him,
said: "It is no nuttier; I shall live
bo that none will believe them."
Hearing at another timo that an inti
mate friend had spoken detractingly
of him, ho said : "i am sure he would
not do it if he had not some reason
ibr ii." This is tho surest as well as
tho noblest way of drawing the-sting
out ot a reproach, and the true method
of preparing a man for that great and
only relief against tho pains of cal
umny. Forfeit lovo carries all other feel
ings with it and in it. And no man
knows how to bo a Christian till he
knows how to lovo Christ with a
sense that Christ s love is such as to !
lie cnotiKlt fronter tlmn all hin fmilts
and deficiencies to enable liim to bear
them. I do not need to go Lock to
bIiow how it is that we do not pre
sume upon thin lovo, and ain njrninRt
it. Wo cantot, if wo renliio it to be
a divine outpouring. It is not in liu
mnn nature to trcHMpaM agninpt good
iienuch aa (iod'g, whero it is rcal
ir.ed. It would reverse the very ac
tion of tho mind. Tho two status arc
incompatible with each other. Ijove
cannot dishonor lovo, from ruusons
which are iundumcntul to human na
ture ; and experience shows that no
man strives ao hard to be free from
imperfections and sins as tho man who
leels that he is swallowed up in tho
depths of divine forgiveness and di
vine lovo.
