If we wmiM lm nmnnjr tin; poml in
fut tiro life, wo must nook pondncsg
hero. If we would lie with blio just
in tho world to come, wo must neck
justico in this world.
To maintain nllrginnro nil our lives
long to tho devil, iiml then ttim our
ImckB upon him nt tho last, bocnuso it
will ny, is mean, nnd I think that
he.ivon receive no mean pooplo.
The best things of on unbelieving
tnan nro all in this life. Tho noaror
he draws to tho p-ravo, tho worse his
condition. Tho moment ho dies, tho
worst things begin, and continuo for
evermore.
When tho worldly man dies, his
sun sots, and sets to rise no more
When tho truo Christian dies, his sun
rises, nnd will shino on to all eternity.
Tho true Christian's best things arc
yet to como.
Tho other world is only tho inside
of which this is the outHide ; and we
shall differ thcro from what wo nro
here, only by having the dust brusliod
oil' from us, so that others shall seo
more distinctly what wo really nro.
Tho br mo laws of being will doubtless
continue us long as wo continuo.
Until wo aro utterly empty of self,
wo nro not read' to bo tilled by God ,
until we aro conscious of our own
weakness, wo aro not fit platforms for
the display of tho divine omnipotence.
Uutil tho arm of flesh is paralyzed,
nnd death is written upon tho whole
natural man, wo are not roady to bo
endowed with tho divine life and
energy.
Now, doing according to tho com
mon interpretation of things is not
enough. Hbat is done must bo dono
cheorfully, gracefully, beautifully.
There is such a thing as beauty of ho
liness, ltight qualities. may como up
nnd bo strong, but that is not enough.
They aro to associato themselves so
with tho Bathetic nature with that
part of the mind which ministers to
grace nnd beauty that they ehall bo
beautiful as well as right.
Yet alittlo whilo, and tho bcliovers
shall part forever with sin. Tliey
shall no longor have to crucify the flesti
with its affections nnd lusts. They
shall no longer need to watch and
pray lest they fall into temptation.
They shall no longer find tho tiesli
lusting against tho spirit. The' shall
no longer Lo constrained to say,
"When I do good evil is present with
mo." They shall bid an etornal good
ly to sin. This is ono of their best
things to como.
No longer is one's life, after ho be
comes a Christian, inspired by appo
tito, or pride, or selfishness. So lon
ger is that which is seculnr or animal
in tho ascendency. It mny havo a
great deal of power, but it is not in
tho ascendency. The reason and tho
moral sentiments assume tho author
ity. Jlon are ihcn inspired by that
which is right, and just, and truo, and
beautiful,. and good. And these aro
not occasional experiences. They bo
como tho controlling forces of lifo.
Vhilo in this world wo tnko rank
by reason of some condition of wealth
or nobility, wo shall, doubtless, in a
spiritual world, tako rank by reason
of our spiritual condition. As wo
leave all our earthly goods benind us,
woalth cannot thoro determine rank ;
and as wo leavo our bodies behind us,
blood cannot thcro dotermino rank.
But as wo tako our virtue and our
vico, our passions and our affections,
our moral and our religious natures,
nnd as we take theso only, these
must detcrmino rank in the fuluro
world.
Christians, got your thoughts to bo
well exercised ; be much in thinking;
think of the goodness and kindness,
holiness and compassion of tho Lord;
think often what great things the
Lord hath dono for your souls; think
what you would that bo should do
for you; much thinking on God nnd
holy things will leavo a holy tincturo
on your hearts, will by degrees do
much to tho begetting of holy habits
and dispositions in you; tho Lord
uses to convey down much of his
holy imago and likeness upon tho
heart by tho thoughts.
Evert Day Religion. Wo must
come back to our point, which is not
to urgo all of you to give yourselves
to mission work, bnt to servo God
more and more in connection with
your doily callings. I have heard
that a woman who has a mission
makes a poor wife and a bad mother;
this is very possible, and at the same
time lamentable ; but tho mission I
would nrgo is not of this sort. Iirty
rooms, Blattering gowns nnd children
with unwashed faces aro swift wit
nesses against tho sincority of thoso
who keep thorn' vinoyards and ne
glect their own. I havo no faith in
that woman who talks of peace and
glory abroad, and uses not soap and
water at homo. Serve God by doing
common actions in a heavenly spirit,
' and then if your daily calling only
leaves you cracks and croviccs of timo,
fill theso up with holy services. To
usotlio Apostles words, "As we havo
opportunity let us do good to all mn."
There is such an idea of being a
Christian as ought to bow every
man's head in reverence and in obedi
ence to it. I do not :;k you to be a
Christian for the sake of escaping
from destruction; I do not ask you
to be a Christian that you may ob
tain a kind of policy of insurance, as
though, on going through a cortain
amount of suffering, tho I-ord Jesus
Christ issues to you a certificate in
your heart or.poul that you shall not
be burned. If you look upon becom
ing a Christian ns taking out an in
sura nee policy, that is tho merest coin
mercial trafficking, and I donot won
der that yon think it unworthy. But
tho idoa of having your moral nature
brought into power and control, so
Hint spontaneously and increasingly,
and with nnmonso energy, on tho
plane of justice, and purity, and lovo,
and truth, and duly, you shall live
not only so as to niskeyou pure and no
ble but so as to make others so who come
under your influence that is an ideal
01 tnrisiiau character wmcu every
man is bound to respect.
