To convert men to character is the
great thing, not to convert thorn to

character. The effective churches
are men and womon who have made

A desire for learning is not leara
ing ; and a desiro for virtue, is not
virtue. Pitch desircs.it is to I iplirmoil
will lead to wisdom and to godliness;
cm a t nrisuan ciiaractercannot bo as
sumed in a moment, when the desire is
awakened. And amid tho excitement
of deathbeds, thero is hardly opportu
nity for the awakening of calm earnest
purposo.
Rowland Hill said to young Dan
iel Wilson, afterwards bishop of Cal
cutta, "Humility is a sweet and guar
dian graco. If I saw you port and
prond, and wanting to go without
tho Lord, 1 would not givo a farthing
for you or your preaching cither ; but
if you aro humblo and child like,
afraid to tako a single step unless tho
Lord point out tho way, then you
will be owned and blessed."
VTo walk hero, as it were, in tho
crypts of lilo; at times from the
great Cathedral abovo ns, wo can
bear tho organ and tho chanting of
the choir; we see light stream through
the open door, when somo friend goes
up beforo us and shall wo fear to
mount tho narrow staircaso of tho
grave that leads out of this uncertain
twilight into tho serene mansions of
tho lifo etornal?
Heaven is not a place to bo bar
gained foron a death bed or at life's
close. It is not a place into which
vou aro to bo ticketed by Priest or
by Tope, or by the Lord himself. Tho
future world cannot bo cheated of its
due, and w e cannot bo cheated of our
duo by tho fright of a sick room, or
by forced prayers on a sinking ship.
Ho are nil our lives long shaping
resistless energy mo characters
by which wo aro to bo judged in ac-t-ordanco
with tho words, "Ho that
is unjust let him bo unjust still ; and
lio that is filthy let him bo filthy
utill ; and bo that is righteous lot him
be righteous still ; and ho that is holy
lot bun be holy still."
Tho samo law of continnanco will
belong to us in tho future world as
in tho prcscut, because wo shall bo
tho same boings thcro as bore. You
aro to-day simply tho result of your
past lifo. You entered upon this
morning the man or woman which
your wholo previous cxnorinnr-n Wl
made you. Tho past, with its sorrow
and joy, with its sudden changes and
graduul movement, all tho incidents
and feelings ot your lifo havo deposit
cd their sediment to make tho solid
and beautiful earth of your charactor
this Sabbath morning. So when you
awako somo morning in tho other
world you will bo precisely what
your wbolo provioua lifo has mndo
you.
Thcro in an unending influence
connected with all that we door s:iy.
Yo can never undo tlio things which
we aro rising to day. Wo can never
unsay tho things which wo aro say
ing to day. When they havo trans
pitvu they leave their everlasting
influence upon us. Somo men think
to themselves, I will becomo wealthy
and then I will bo honest or benevo
lent. Hut during that long timo of
dishonesty or selfishness, you arc
putting stones into the structure of
j our everlasting life, which you can
i.cver remove; you aro marring the
beautiful teniplo of your character
and making its walls dark and difi,.'
tired with the- pictures of evil. And
tho past can never bo undone.
Somo would say that it seems fit
ting that wo should prepare ourselves
before wo go into the presence of God.
That notion arises from our contimini
and groat mistake of thinking that we
io not always in tho presence of Lira'
who is everywhere. Wo cannot re
ally got nearer to him by dying I
think that tho notion of preparation
for death, w hen reference is mado to
spiritual states, if wo should cxainino
it carefully, and test it Ihoroughly,
would bo found to have its root in
selfishness. Wo should perceive that
it originates, in most instances, in a
desiro to so manage at the lat, as to
get into aplaeo in the future, in which
wo do not deserve to bo. That seems
like selfishness ami dishonesty, and
must bo tho worst preparation for
Leaven and tho best preparation for
hell. !

Into its eompniilion, is warranted to exceed any
thing of the kind ever yet ellrred lo tbe Public
as an eitirnal application f..r th diseases for
which It is recommended. We are eatiefled that
It will work Its own road into tha conlidenre of
all who una It, and those who try it once will
never be without it, and therefore wo rely on
xperienee as lbs best test of its usefulness. It
is pronounced by Farriers, and all who have tried
il, to he th beat application ever need. This
Ktnbroeation baa been put np for over eight
years, and it is duly through the increasing de
mand and nrrent raiment of m M.ml. ami v.
Publie that 1 send it forth as the grand remedial
agent for tha varioua diseasee to which that
nobis and naeful animal, the herse, is subject.
Many remedies have been offered to the Pub
lic under different forms, some of lues are in
jurious, otfaets at best of little use, and many
wholly improper to answer the purposes for which
tboy aro recommended.
A judicious and really useful composition, free
from those objections, has therefore long been
desired by many gentlemen who have valuable
horses, and are unwilling to trust them to the
car of designing and pretended Farriers. Their
wishes are at length fully gratified, by ( Lr.
lleale) being prevailed upon U allow this valua
ble Kmbroeation (which has proved so efficacious
to the variuas diseases) to bo prepared and
brought out to the public.
This Kmbroeation was extensively nsed by
the Uovernment during the war.
