Tm HxrrT Mors The happy morn Ii some Triumphant oe'r the gtaie The Saviour lcavee Hit tomb, Omnipotent to save: Captivity to captive lead, Far Jesus limb, who was drud. There are scores of young men, well intentioned, warmhearted, no lovers of evil, but adrill from their homes, or with homes as unattractive to lliem as so many of our homes to nnv j-oung man may well be, ho vet havo no place of resort for pood compniiion ship, for amusement, for an evening ol rational recreation which is not in di rect contact with coarsene89,camhling, rice, and poisonous drinks. Even to enjoy themselves it is requisite that thev snuff the airs of hell. There aro thousands of persons, rich and poor, vounfr and old, in the most astonish ing ignorance of useful scienco and art, and to whom cleanliness and ven tilation aro unknown ; who regard tho body as necessarily afflicted with all the ills it dow endures, and have no conception of the health and delicacy of which it is capable, and of tho reul joy of which it is intended to bo tho medium, while the thought of God's glory, ascrystalizcd in tho snow-flake, or dropping from the tonguo in words soft as wool, and electric as the light ning, is utterly inconceivable. This fact is terribly serious, and calls for an immediato and ample remedy. It is not to be treated lightly, hut to bo de plored and done away with at once. Wild Oats. In all tho wide range of accepted maxims thore is none, take it for all in all, more thoroughly abom inable than the one as to the sowing of wild oats. Look at it on what side you will, and I defyjouto make anything but a devil's maxim of it. hat a man be he young, old or middle aged sows, that, and nothing else, shall he reap. The only one thing to do with wild oats is to put them careful ly into the hottest part of the fire, and get them burnt to dust, every sued of them. If you sow them, no mutter in what ground, up they will come, with long, tough roots like tho couch grass, and luxuriant stalk and leaves, as sure as there is a sun in heaven a crop w hich it turns one's heart cold to think of. The devil, too, whoso spc cial crop they aro, will see that they thrive, and you, and nobody else, will have to reap them ; and no common reaping will get them out of the soil, which must be dug down deep again and again. Veil for you, if, with all your care, yoa can make the ground sweet again to your dying day. The greatest of temporal blessings is health of body, and the greatest of spiritual blessings that which in cludes all spiritual blessings in one is health of soul. Health of soul is the full nosscssion, harmonious action, and right direction of all the faculties; it is the joy in lite, and joy in the present, and a looking forward with out dismay; with infinite hope in the future ; contentment with all that 1 1 to may bring, and resignation in all t lint life may take away ; it is aspiration without uneasiness, progress without friction, freedom with perfect peace. This health is found in God alone, and without tho senso of immediate con tact and communion with him, there is no true health for man. The infin ite Father alone sufticcs, and alto gether suffices. Everybody has been taught to pray daily, "Tby kingdom come." Now, if we hear a man swear in the streets, we think it very wrong, and say he "takes God's name in vain." But there is a twenty times worso way of taking His name in vain than that. It is to ask God lor what wo don't want. If you do not wish for his kingdom don't pray for it. But if you do, yon must do moro than pray for it; you must work for it. And, to work for it, you must know what it ' it ; we have all prayed for it mnny a day without thinking. I have seen a professedly Christian mother more wrought up over tho mud brought in upou her carpet by her boy's shoes, than over tho lio that sullied bis conscience and proclaimed him n coward. I have seen her exhib it more anxiety when detained from church to hear from her daughter's lips how this and that one was dress ed than what the man of God said concerning tho great themes of death and eternity. Ah, thought I, will sho, through her instrumentality, find those children at the right hand on the last great day? I remember M'Cheyne says, "Christ gives last knocks." That is a very sorrowful thought. He knocks at the door, but there is such a thing as a last knock, and some of yoa will get your hist knock before long. Ho will never knock again ; you will never have another warning nor another in vitation, but he Mill sav, "Lot him alone, let him alono." You perhaps, will loci tho easier, but ah ! if you do not wake here, you will wake else where; and if before long God docs not startle you into ropuntaneo, you will startle into everlasting despair. Few realize how much a frequent indulgence in small fre tfulness can do to neutralize the social effect of Christ ian love and faith, howevor sincere. To tho mass of the world manner is every thing, and Christian parents es pecially are to remombtr Hint for bear anco a " inning way1 and consistent Christian conduct, are next to om nipotent in shaping the dostiny of a child's soul. .Variety of expression sometimes 'iows that the miud is not altogether absorbed in the object, but is still able to consider the mode of its ntteraneo ; but when the heart becomes entirely swallowed up in the desire it cannot stay to polish and fashion its words ; it seiaes upon any expression nearest to band, and with these it continues its entreaties. !So long as God under stands it, tho troubled mind has no anxiety about its modes of spocch. Religion is the only metaphysio that the multitude can understand and adopt. It is better to make one's self ac ceptable than to make one's self im portant. Absence cures little passions but aggravate great ones. Old men are the majesty of a people. l H. Foster. Kdwerd lVikr 1. D. U'Uirk.
