Christian Life. Did a holy life consist of one or two nolilo deeds Borne Bignul specimens of doing, or enduring, or sufiuring we miht 'ac count lift- the failure, nnd reckon it email dishonor to turn buck in ouch a conflict. But a holy life is liindo up of a multitudo of small tiling. It in the little things of tho hour, and not the groat things or tlio ago, that nil up a life like that of Paul and John, like thnt of Rutherford, or Rniinord, or Wartyn. Littlo words, not eloquent speeches' or sermons; little deeds, not lnirack's,'ior battles, nor one great he roic act or mighty martyrdom, make up the true Christian life. The littlo constant sunbeam, not tho lighting; tho waters of Siloali, "that go softly" in their moek mission of refreshment, not "the waters of tho river great and mighty," rushing down in torront noise, and toreo, ate the true symbols of a holv life. The avoidance of littlo evils, little sins, little inconsistencies. littlo weaknesses, little follies, littlo in discretions and imprudences, little loi Lies, littlo indulgences of self and of. the flesh, littlo acts ol indolence or in decision, or slovlinoss or cowardice, lit tle equivocations or aberrations trom high integrity, little touches of shab biness and meanness, littlo bits of cov- ctousncss penurioustiess, little exhibi tions of worldliness and gayety, lit tle indifference to the feelings or wishes of others, little outbreaks of temper or crossness or sclfis.iness or vanity ; the evidence of such little things as these goes fur to make up at Jsast the negativo beauty of a holy life. And then attention to tho little duties of the day and hour, in public transactions, or private dealings, or lamily arrangements; to little words, and tones; little benevolences, or for bearanccs, or tendernesses; littlo self denials, and self-restraints, and sclf forgetfulness; little jdans of quiet kindness and thoughtful consideration for others; to punctuality, and meth od, and truo aim, in tho ordoring of each day Ihcso are tho active devel opemcnts of a holy life, the rich and divine mot-iacs of which it is compos ed. What makes your green hill so beautiful? Not the outstanding peak or stately elm, but tho bright sward which clothes its slopi-s, composed of Innumerable blades ot slcndor grass. It is of small things that a great life is made up; and he who will acknowl edge no life as great, save that which is built np of great things, will find little in Bible characters to admire or copy. Mode or Reproof. Some persons prido themselves on being blunt, or, as they call it, "honest';" but very blunt people do little good to others, get little love to themselves. Tho Scriptures recommend gentleness and kindness. Heproof should fall like tho dew, and not like tho rushing hailstorm. The oil insinuates itself ; the stone wounds and then bounds. (I'sa. cxli, 5.) Christ ians should take heed of getting fond of the work of "rebuking." .Such "spir itual constables" do a great deal of mischief without intending it. They arc in a Church what a very witty and sarcastic .person is in society, or what a tell-tale is in school ; and ap proximate very closely to that class which the apostle terms "lmsybodics in other men's matters." Our man ner must bo tender and winning, j The nail of reproof, says an old writer, must be well oiled in kindness before it is driven home. Meddling with the faults of others is like attempting to move a person afflicted with the rheu matic gout it must ho done slowly and tenderly, nor must we bo fright ened by an outcry or two. Tho great thing is to show tho person that you really lovo him ; and if you manifest this in tho sight of God he will bless your efforts, and give you favor in the sight of an erring brother. Candor. There is nothing sheds so fine a light upon the human mind as candor. It whs called whiteness by the ancients to denote its purity ; and it has always won tho esteem duo to the most admirable virtues. The man whose opinions make the deepest im pression upon his fellow man. whose influence is most lasting and efficient, whose friend-hip is instinctively ought where all others hove proved faithless, is not the man of brilliant parts, or flattering tongue, or splen did genius, but ho whoso lucid candor and ingenious truth transmit tho heart's real feelings pure and without refraction. There are other qualities which aro more showy, ami other traits that have a higher place in the world's codo of honor, but none wear better or gather less tarnish by use, or claim deeper homage in that silent reverence which mind pays to virtue. Accrr-TANCE or One's Lot. Perso vere in earnestly striving to conquer in yourself tho annoyance little ditilv vexations cause you ; turn nil your at tentions to this "point for the present; feel only nt this moment (iod only re quires this of you ; do not sow the seeds of good desires in the gardens of others, but tuliivato well your own. 10 not desire to bo what you are not, but rather desire to be well what you are; turn your thoughts to perfecting yourself thus, and to bearing the cross es, be they great or small, which you may theuiu encounter. A Wise Exccsk. On one occasion, t a dinner at the Bishop of Chester's, Hannah Moro urged Ir. Johnson to take a little wine. Ho replied : "I can't drink a little, child, anil there fore, 1 never touch it. Abstinence is as easy to me as temperance would be difficult.'' Many have tho same in firmity, but are destitute of the same conrago, and therefore arc mined. j Many have pnizlcd themselves1 bout the origin of evil. I observe I there it evil, and that there is a way to I tcapait and with tbitl betnn and end 1 he crtfnrfirtd tlrpubltan.
