Democratic Almanac. This valu
able publication for 1866 and 1867 can
be bad by calling at the Drug Store of
C. D. Watson. A copy for both years
mailed to any address on receipt of
60 cents, or eithor for 25 cents. Ao

It's possession is worth three times the
value of the money.
Local Improvements. Our town,
id view of coming events, seems to
manifest a desire to recover from
its former prostration and apparent
indifference in tho way of improve
ments. Atpresentthc religious seems
' to lead secular affairs. Two magnifi
cent church edifices are to be erected
during the coining summer, (a Meth
odist and a Presbyterian,) besides a
number of privato dwellings.
We are informed that in a few days
workmen well commence jouringdown
and removing the old Presbyterian
church, on the corner of Second and
Pine streets. This building was cnet-,
ed in 1840-41, under the superintend
ence of Rev. F. G. Betts then the
pastor of the congregation and has
been used as their house of worship
ever since. Iu original cost was
$800 a meagre sum for building pur
poses in these days, but it was a heavy
drain upon the congregation, then in
its infaucy, and it was not for some
time that the debt was discharged.
Since then the congregation has rap
idly increased both in numbers and in
wealth; and their object in removing
the old building, is to erect on its site
an edifice of a capacity suitable to
their wants and in better accordance
with thoir prosperity as a church and
the means of its individual members.
We have examined the plan of the
proposed edifice which was designed
by J. C. IToxio, of Philadelphia, and
is now in the possession of Mr. George
Thorn, who lias been chosen by the
Building Committed as General Su
perintendont of carpenter work ; but
our space will not permit uif to go into
a description of the details. The stylo
of the architecture will be Gothic
The entire building will cover a space
of 57 by 132 feet. This includes the
church proper and the lecture room,
which is to adjoin It in tbe rear; and
will be fronted by two towers, one
0 and tbe other 163 feet in height.
The walls will bo built entirely of
tono, laid in broken A shlor and rubble
Tnnsonry, and with small ornamental
projections and wings on each side.
A great portion of the dressed and
cut stone for arches and corbels for
the doors and windows is already fin
ished, and can bo seen at tbe shop of
3Ir. Thomas Liddell, contractor ior
stone work. The audience room will
bo well arranged for comfort and con
venience, having sufficient ornament
and embellishment to relieve its sice
and give elegance of appearance with
out display, and is intended to scat
comfortably between 500 and 600 peo
ple. The estimated cost of the entire
superstructure is $25,000, most of
which has already been subscribed.
When completed, it will without doubt
be the finest ehurcb edifice in this
aection of the State. Its architectural
beauty will be an ornament to the
town and a credit to tho enterprise
and liberulity of its builders.
Tho Mothodist church is to bo a
brick structuro of large sire, and will
be erected on Second street, between
Cherry and Walnut, and will cost
probably $20,000. We have not seen
design of tho building, but have no
doubt it will be an honor to tbe town.
These improvements, in connection
with tho privileges of the Boom
and Manufacturing Company, char
tered last winter for the erection of
a boom, mills, and manufacturing es
tablishments, will furnish our capital
ists with ample opportunities for in
vesting and multiplying their funds.
We observe that Senator Wallace, on
Friday lust, road a bill in place char
tering a Hotel .Company, which will
grant the privilego of erecting a hotel
equal in magnificence and stylo with
surrounding . improvements and the
demands of the public.

Cot'RT Our present toi-m of Court
was almost a fuilur ; more than hulf
the Jurors foiled to answer, while an
equal projiortion of parties and wit
nesses failed to appear. Nothing was
dono on Monday. On Tuesday morn
ing the Court succeeded iu getting a
Grand Jury by pressing spectators in
to tho box. The afternoon was con
sumed in the argument for a new trial
in the case of Mrs. Miller. The Court
has not rendered a docision as we go
to press. Wednesday was consumed
principally in the granting of Li
censes, road petitions, and reading
the Docket.
License. Tho Court, on yesterday,
granted license to tho following nam

After the business of tho meeting

for Israel Test, isq., who sooa appear

fully illustrated "loyalty," Military

the loadors of tho Disunion porty, and
that tho very men who mado them
selves hoarse a few years ago by shout
ing fur liberty and freedom, have in
tho few yeura they have been in power
