Duty of Township Aiditoks. It
nitty not be generally known that a
general law of the last session of the
Legislature, ajprovod April 11, lSOC,
requires the bounty necounts of every
district to be carefully audited by the
Township Auditors, and "prepare a
condensed statement of the condition
ot these finances, and publish the saino,
fit the cost of the district, for three
successive weeks, in two papers.'' It
not only requires this duty to be per
formed by tho Township Auditors, but
imposes a penalty of fifty dollars upon
each Auditor who refuses to comply,
one-half of which lino goes to the
ppiKCcutor, and tho other half to the
aihool fund of tho district. It pro
vides also, that the Auditors shall
notify tho School Directors or other
parties having tho disbursement ol'
the bounty funds, to appear before
them ut such a time as the Auditors
shall fix, for tho purpose of enabling
the Auditors to closo up tho bounty
accounts of the township for tho fiscal
year.
Trolui.k with Tiiikey. A serious
cinbroglio in our relations with the
I'iviin has arisen as follows: Sarkis
llinasian, w ho has for many years act
ed us t':o resident agent in Turkey
fur tho sale of Dr. J. C. Aycr & Co.'s
medicines, driven by tho increase of
his business to a necessity for more
room.built his warehouses in Constan
tinople several stories higher, alter
liuving obtained tho necessary permit
from the authorities. Tho Iiiiniis of
a neighboring mosque, which over
looked the premises demanded a largo
present in money, which was refused.
They then applied to tho Grand Vi
rier, for tho enforcement of an obsolete
law, which had been disregarded two
hundred years, requiring him to take
down tho building to eighteen feet,
which was granted, and they com
menced tho work ol demolition. Mi
tiasian then applied to tho American
MiniMcr, who net i lied tho Sublime
Toi te that American property could
not thus bo trilled with, and that the
demolition must ccaso. Then com
menced the usual course of Mussulman
prevarication and promises, but no
real redress. Finally Minister Mor
ris informed them that if their depre
dations continued, he should order the
U. S. ships of war to enter tho Ios
phorus and Messrs. Aycrs' medical
warehouse would not be alone roofless.
A stroke ol his pen could have laid tho
wLolo city under the sweep of Ameri
can caution, backed by men w ho arc
not schooled in tho lessons of fear.
This brought them to their senses nnd
fpeedy redress. Minasian has now
un-ived itythis counlrj-, to present the
case to our State Department for in
demnity. At length it is something
to say among tho peoples of the earth
"I am an American ciiizcnl" Col
