extreme jilonsuro this week of having

bunks, soap, fire arms, grape vines,
dress-making, real estate, railroads,

to tho report of Mr. Worrall, the Ln
giuoer appointed by Iho Governor to
construct sluices in the dams of the
Susquehanna nnd its tributaries, lor
the purpose of allow ing shad to pass
up tho streams. Should the plan prove
feasible we may expect, ere long, to
enjoy tho luxury of eating fresh shad
caught at our doors.
Mr. Swoope's lecture on "Chemical
Force," in tho Court House on Tues
day night, was well attended, and
highly appreciated by tho audienco.
In a pecuniary point of view, it was a
success, so far as tho Churches were
concerned, but we should eupposo that
Mr. Swoopo realized tho reverse, from
tho amount of material and labor he
bestowed for tho gratification of his
audience.
Horridle Murder. One of the most
inhuman murders ever committed in
this section of tho State, occurred on
the night of the 19th, on tho western
border of this county in Washington
township, Jclferson county. The house
of an old widow lady, aged 80 years,
named .McDonald, residing alone, and
who it was supposed hud considerable
money about her, was entered on the
j.ight in question. The old lady was
killed, her head split open with a
hatchet. Two men from Oil City,
who formerly resided in the neighbor
hood, named Charles Chase and Dean
Graves, aro charged with tho crimo
Tb former was arrested w hilo mo-
king for tho railroad at Ilidgway,
and is now in Erookville jail ; tho lat
ter stole a horse tho same night, and
'was not apprehended al last accounts.
Pennsylvania Kailroau. We this
week lay before our readers tho major
portion of tho annual report of this
corporation. Our peoplo in this sec
tion of tho Slato have heard a great
deal of debate pro and con, in reference
to this road, whilo but very few have
ever examined or read oncot its annu
al reports. This road is being rapidly
extended through tho Northwestern
portion of tho State, and it therefore
becomes tho duty of every citizen to
properly investigate it, in order to fully
understand its workings. Tho receipts
and expenditures of this road are truly
enormous equal to that of threo
States liko Pennsylvania, or tho ne
gro Bureau.
As this Company has now underta
ken to completo tho Tyrone and Clear
field branch to this place, it becomes
the duty of Iho citizens of this county
to interest thomselves particularly,
and for this purpose we Iny before
them this report, for which we bespeak
an attentive perusal.
Tho contract for grading and bridg
ing theioad toourtown has been give.)
to tho Messrs. Collins, one of the old
est and best railroad firms in tho State,
for tho sum of $10.1,000. Tho road is
to be finished not later than tho 1st of
April, 1SG8, and as much earlier as
possible They aro already on tho
ground, erecting shanties, etc.
