$rl!oloun liUlcffUanjf. Yoctiiitl Training. In tlie ivli gioui nurture of children we ohoulJ uddrcsiouiik'lvctfur more thnti we do to the ontinirnt of honnty in their wind. We aro enter to fill our homos with bountiful and costly objects, but nre slow to fill our minds mid their with beautiful thoughts. We are im patient to clothe ourselves and them In the finest nppnrcl, but we are alto gether too patient ol repulsive habits and (Informing dispositions. Wo want to geo ourselves and mako them sec that beauty, taste and cleganco are great things; and that all meanness, ill-tompcr, fretfulness, falsehood and wrong ure utterly ugly. We need to Bee for ourselves, and help them to feel tho unspcuknble attractiveness of mor al beauty, tho lovliness of truth, the charm of a sweet, forgiving spirit, and tho splendor ol selt'-snorilieo ; that every bad hubit is a sin against taste and beauty, as well as an offence against the. Holy Ghost; that a soul full of Christian goodness is as superi or to a pretty face and showy Urcss as a summer sunrise among the moun tains excels any landscape of Church or Lnndseer. And those lessons can and ought to bo taught and illustrat ed at all limes. The bowed head is not a prayer, but that posture ta in accord ance with the best taste and usage, and this attitude of devotion of itself calls up devout and prayerful thoughts, and we are moro likely to pray thus than when gazing about tho room. Let everything iu the room and tho service be designed and ordered with a view to awaken the love of beauty, and especially moral and spiritul beau ty, in children. Let them learn to associate religion with taste, refine ment, purity and propriety. Let beuuty and goodness be always con nected with each other in their lessons and services and experience ; and they will come 10 love goodness as beauty, and livo in the good they lovo. Christmas. It is well to celebrate the birth of a great and holy soul in to earth and time; for all true remem ing and revering bring us into closer communion and completer harmony with his greatness and holiness. And in the case of Christ, lot us remember and celebrate, not on the 25th of De cember only, but every day, what ho did and what he was. We would not diminish tho volume nor detract from the splendor of tho praise that rolls up from thousands of churches and homes and hourts on that great occasion. Only let not our reverence and praise find its only vent in pomp and festivi ty. Let not our praise escape in lip homago and float off in ineffectual waves of sound on tho undulating air. We honor Christ most by trying to bo liko him. We praise him most by doing most for men, lor truth, for jus tice, for God. Wo celebrate him best by feeding the hungry, clothing the nuked, visiting tho prisoner, uplifting t'le fallen, and breaking tho bread of life to those in the shadow of spiritual imago, and taking on tho features of Ins sublime luith, his all-conquoring trust, his fidelity to duty, his spirit of love and Bacririco, and his oneness w ith tho Father. Not Excitement, rat I'iett. Preaching that stirs us up to a sense of tho peril of men under tho law, and urges our responsibility in relation to it, possesses a great power for a time ; but these feelings quickly wear out. It is impossible for even the best of pooplo to live long under tho influence of an excited conscience. They can not bear it a great while. A reaction is suro to come. What we need is to be brought into a more fervent love of God, moro overflowing joy in the Holy Ghost, moro of that faith which feeds and rests on Christ ; then tho church will have food, not for forty days, but for forty years. We need an average level of feeling and actions muny times higher than at present, where tho feelings grow out of a higher class of Christian experience, which does not wear out. These promote health, nnd never leave tho body and mind to that langour which necessarily suc ceeds excitement. They keep up tho spiritual tone, and mako Christian work hearty and constant a "needs bo" of the "new mnn." The Path of Life. Whv not strew the path of life with flowers. It requires no stronger effort than to plant thorns and briars. Is it not Btraniro that we bend all our effm-t in cultivating thoso plants which af ford no pleasure, but, on the contrary, abridgu our happiness; while wo Buf fer to spring up, spontaneously, the iew suange nowcrs that occasionally throw a smile along our way fit need not be thus. The few happy men around us should teueh us an impor portiut lemon. There is no reason in the world why we should not be as linppy as they. If we would look on the path of life as a road, we must cultivate ourselves, and go diligently about it. Less frequently would we have causo to mourn over tho bitter pBt, or tho dark and cloudy present. If our years have run thus far to waste, let us with caro influence the future, nnd with all caro and attention cultivato thoso fruits and flowers that will yield ft harvest of agreeable pleasure. PlscnimAOED. We doubt not that thoro will bo seasons, even in the hnp picst Christian pilgrimage, when the soul will be "discouraged becauso of tho way." When difficulties which wo thought had passed over, will re. appear; when temptations, which wo honed had been forever vanquished, will again rise up against us ; when sins, which we trusted wo had forsa ken w ill onco moro tnnr our pnlh ; and theso things will lead us to feci a' doen sensation of despondency ; we Bhall be temptod to think that God cannot pardon delinquencies g0 fre quent and unprovoked, and that we shall certainly perish on the journey, nnu never arrive at that journey s blissful end. Let us bo careful that such feelings lead us not into tempfa- tion ; that they do not c lose our hearts against the infinity of God's mercy in Christ Jesus. One of tho saddest things about liu-' man nature is that a man may guide! oiners in me pain 01 mo without walk- J ing in it himself ; that ho may be a pilot, and yet a castaway. To the truo Christian Uiero should bo no exorciso so Bweot to his soul as that of secret communion with God. ?!u eimifirld rpublirau. Trn.M or p-tnst ription.
