nenco from the commission of evil is,
of course, a virtue in itself, and what
are styled tho pastiivo virtues, such as
pationco, forbearance and resignation,
are of inestimable valuo. Yut these
of thouisolvcs cannot give complete
ness to Christian character, however
essential they may be to its integral
composition.
Silent Influences It is the bub
bling spring which flows gentle, the
littlo rivulet which runs along, day
and night, by tho farm-honso, that is
useful, rather than tho swollen flood
or roaring cataract. Niagara excites
our wonder, and wo stand amazed at
the power and greatness of God, thoro.

the same world requires thousands
and tens of thousands of silver fount
ains and gently flowing rivulets, that
water every larm, aim meadow, ana
every garden, and that shall flow on,
evory day and night, with thoir gen
tle, quiet beauty. Bo with tho acts of
our lives. It is not by great deeds
like thoso of the martyrs that good is
to be done, but by tho daily and quiet
virtues of life, tho Christian temper,
the good qualities of relatives and
friends.
Little Things. Springs are littlo
things, but they are sources of large
streams; a helm is a little thing, but
it governs tho courso of a ship; a bridle-bit
is a little thing, but sec its use
and powers; nails and pegs are little
things, but they hold the parts of largo
buildings together; a word, a look, a
mile, a frown, are all little things,
but powerful for good or evil. Think
of thin, and mind the littlo things.
Pay that littlo debt; it is a promise,
redeem it it is a shilling, hand it
over ; you know nut what important
events hang upon it. Keep your word
sacredly keep it to children; they
will mark it sooner than any ono else ;
and the effects will probably be as
lasting as life. Mind the little things '.
A little thoughtful attention, how
happy it makes tho old ! They have
outlived most ot the friends of their
early youth. How lonoly their hours !
Often their partners in life have long
filled silent graves ; often their child
ren they have followed to tlio tomb.
They stand solitary, bending on their
staff, waiting till tlio sarao call shall
reach them. How often they must
think of absent lamented faces; of the
love which cherished them, and their
tears of sympathy that fell with theirs.
now all gone ! Why should not the
young cling around and comfort them,
cheering their gloom with songs and
happy smiles f
Faith enables us to see our frieuds
depart without murmuring, and to
meet our own disolution with resigna
tion and hope. Lut when the forces
of ambition ebb out of a man's con
sciences, when hope dies out of life,
when love decays within him, the
main-spring of his being is broken, and
desolation takes possession of his soul.
Flowers grow and bloom over bis
grave in the cemetery ; but over the
Krave of hopo and affection in the
heart nothing green will grow. The
ashes of the immortal children of the
heart are watched by angels who will
keep them sacred until tho deathless
ppark that sleeps within them, fanned
by the breath of God, shall flame forth
in purer lustre.
Ye read that when tho Lord de
scended on Mount Sinia, "there were
thunders and lightnings, and a thick
cloud upon the mount, and the voice
of the trumpet exceedingly loud, so
that ali tho people that were in the

camp trembled." But when Jcsun
came, all was lovliness and peace. A
beautiful star shone forth tothow the
placo where the Saviour of tho world
was lying, a little Laho. When the
law was given it was said, "Charge

"If we survey with care and candor
the present wraith of tho world I
mean its wealth intellectual, moral,
and spiritual wo find that Christian
ity has not only contributed to the
patrimony of men its brightest and
most precious jewels, but linj likewise
been vihat the Saviour pronounced it,
the salt or preserving priuciplo of all
the residue, and has maintained its
health, bo far as it has been maintain

There is a place and there is a duty
for every one. No ono need bean
idler, a mere lollowcr of the camp,
fiod wants faithful followers to form
his aggTessive host for tho suppres
sion ot the fearful rebellion which
threatens his kingdom. The profes

Th man who has but a single vir
tue of charity is very much like a hen
that has but one chit ken. The soli
tary chicken calls forth an amount of
. clucking and scratching that a whole
brood seldom does.
Vhat ever you wish children to be,
be that yourself. This is tho iocivt of
