EfUfllous WisftUanit. Pernlor, lave you ft home in lieavcn awaiting you? We liav no riglils which arc wrongs to other ooile. Those persons who do most good deeds are leaet conoious of it. JudgnuMit is the. throne of pru dence and silence is its sanctuary. God's wo)lo are bound to Bludy to promoto God's glory. The devout lile is life rondored up as an oflering on the alter of Human ity. The truly grateful heart may not be ablo to tell ot gratitude, uui it i-iiu lool and love ana act. Tl, Mutnen of the devout lilo l coiisccrntion, devotion to unselfish, hu mane, holy ends. ' It must bo life. Xo man is born into the world 'whoso work is not born, with him. There is always work, and tools to work with, tor those wno win. Because God has promised bread to those who nsk him, docs not loiiow .hat Christians are not to seek out and feed the hungry. Love to Christ, and holy zeal for the salvation of men, are alembics in which virulent hostilities are melted, and old friendships cemented with new strength. As the lapiardy brightened his hard diamond with dust planed from itself, so must we clear hard scriptures by others that are more plain and per picuous. The Sunday-school is the nursery of vour future church and the only guarantee you have that it ill have a future or even a continuous and healthful life in the preseut. For what is that church worth that nog lectsthe spiritual instructions of the young r The great want of the Church now is not learning, nor orthodoxy, nor pi ety "rcsiirncd to the course of provi dential events; but a manly, earnest, steadfast, personal consecration of be lieve to the daily work which the Lord of the vineyard summons his servants to do. Strike for somo noble and command ing usefulness, for an identification with some really valuable ana pcrmn. nent contribution to the well'aro of the race. Only God and angels really have Ivasure to be critics and lookers on. We who are in the tress and press of the great battle have no time to bo fault finders and satirists of oth ers' performances, but to take heed to make our own calling and election sure. Lost wealth may be regained by in dustry ; the wrock of health restored by temperance; lorgotten knowledge may be ours again by study; aliena ted friendship soothed into forgotful ncss; and even forfeited reputation redeemed by patience and virtue. But whoever again looked upon, his vanished hours t recalled his wasted years, stamped them with wisdom, or effaced from Heaven's record the fear ful blot of wasted life f At the present time a voice conies up from every part of the land, that the work of recruiting goes on cheer ily, and many aro "proclaiming their readiness to become good soldiers of Christ. What will bo the result f Will ther remain true to their profession f V ill they become a power in tho Lord's camp? Will they, withall their peart and soul, rodcem their pledgor Will they, in falling into the ranks, render the service which is reasonably expected 01 incmr I has often been a matter of regret that the Church may receive largo in gatherings without any future evi dence of proportionate strength. It would seem as if many imagined that all that was required rjf them was to declare themselves on the Lord's side, and having dono this, settle down in inactivity, as if their work was done. Tho church is filled, and yet evinces no additional life. So ought it not to be. Every one should, in his sphere, be a worker. The field is wide, and for every willingjhcart an appropriate service may be found. Tako any singlo congregation of the faithful, and pass it kindly and charitably under review, and what do we behold ? Anything like a union of hcaits and hands for tho furlher nnce of tho gospel f Anything lik.i tho pi esonce there of an iutenscdesire that the kingdom of God may speedily come ? Anything liko a universal re nunciation of fashion as a rule of faith nd practice f Anything like a stir ring up of professed disciples to take hold ujton the promises, and, with pro vailing toil, subdno the enemies at tho gate ? Alas ! alas ! out of every hun dred communicants, how many tons aro there tealons to keep and perform their vows? How many who arc reaily to prove their failu by their works? flow many act as though they recognize tho existence of any new or special obligations resting up on them hy reason of their connection with the Lord's people ? If Jerusa lem were now searched with candles by the Great Head of tho Church, Low man could abide his scrutiny and be approved as "faithful. " The interference of mind and w ill with the course of nature is no doubt more intelligible to us as taking place through human action, than if wo transcend human action. But we aro now speaking of possibility, in a strict logical sense. And, although we are entirely ignorant how tho Creator can t hango tho courso of nature otherwise than through man, it seems clearly unreasonable to nllirm that such other interference is impossible, because wo know nothing about it. If thero are invisible hcmr-a in tho universe, why should they not have wuno power of noting upon tho coarse of nature ? So f:ir as analog is any guide, the fact 1 that we, by our volitions, can alter the j course ol things without violating laws, would suggest a presumption ; that tho same thing can be dono in : other ways of which science simply! knows nothing and about which iin- agination cannot with much advant-i ago exercise its power of conjecture. ! It is conceivable, therefore, that pray-1 cr relating to definite physical ondsj might be answered without thoap-j pcarance of tin slightest departure from tho ordinarv course of iiiilure.
