Lin's Summary.
M to Insect, to Insect Mud.
That's thy suitor, nu ol uiiud !

That's thy ouding acnes' lord !

That' thy .tiding beauty etueen !

That'i ihy tiding queen of grscc!

That's thy' lifetime child of sorrow !
Heavenly rraee, nouffht elee can span.
That's ihy oslt hope poor "man."
AVe expoct everything and are pro

Our vanity is inccdsantly the enemy
of our Bcli'-luvo.
It is by becoming more unhappy that
we sometimes learn to bo lens bo.
Loving hearts are like beggars ;
they live on what is given them.
By acting as we ought to think, we
end by thinking as we ought to act.
The most dangerous of flatteries is
the inferiority of That is around us.
He who has ceased to enjoy the
superiority of his friend, has ceased to
love lum.
Let us go alwa3-s beyond the duties
marked out, and keep within the
pleasures permitted.
Every man who is "diligent in bui
ness, serving the Lord," is a sermon
brimful of the energies of life and
truth, a witness to the comprehensive
ness and adaption of Christ's religion,
a preacher ot righteousness in scenes
where none can preach so eriectively
or so well
Oh 1 how humane, how divine, how
god-like, was the love that irradiated
the cross of Cbriut. ho can wonder
that that instrument of his death the
once accursed cross should b? fixed
forever an the emblem of the spirit,
the power, by jrhich tho world is to
be subdued to uod r
Your feelings and frames are noth
ing; Your ceremonies, and notions
and ereeds.and ordinances, and formttb
participation in worship, are all noth
ing without Christ ; but with trust in
linn there is not a height ol glory
and honor in the whole universe to
which a creature can attain, to which
you may not ascend.
We are called to be ourselves holy.
as Christ was holy, in all manner o
conversation. We are called to be
followers of God as dear children
yes, to bo perfect in our limited, finite
sphere, as the l'oitv is pcrlect in ins
Biilimited, infinite sphere : and we
bold that no belief is unto salvation
but that which incites us to godliness
Co not in the path of evil, deluded
men, but eschew everything which is
false and ignoble ' Then in thee shall
begin a heaven of the mind and soul
a heaven not dependent on the un
scriptural conditions which men may
make, but upon the laws ol man s in
tellectual and spiritual n::turc upon
the condition of activity, labor and
love.
The Christian is repeatedly called a
soldier in the New Tcstamont, and
his course compared to a warfare.
Though we often rrpeat this Buying,
with a general notion of i'.s fitness,
we are, perhaps, not apt to realize it.
To realize it, that is, to bring it into
actual consciousness and practice, is
to make the highest attainment in
Christian lite.
But controversy convinces nobody.
If any man does not see the divine in
Jeus, why waste words to prove it to
him f AY bile we argue about it on the
plane of the logical understanding, the
truth escapes us both, and leaves us
more barren than before. (July as
we see, do we know. The teli:noiiy
of tho humblest disciple is wiier iluin
the reasons of the greatest philosphcr.
Merchant rRF.ACitr.rts. A clergv-
man, if very faithful, may have, in
the course of a year, some t wo or
threo hundred opportunities, wherein
he may preach Christ. His studies so
seclude him that he can seldom mingle
with men. lint a Christian merchant
has, by his habitual intercourse with
men, a thousand opportunities each
year for commending unto them the
truth of his religion.
Morality is a very beautiful part of
a Christian's superstructure, but it is
rot a inundation. Oilier foundation,
remember, no man can lay, than that
is laid. We have seen sumo melan
choly crashes in the moral careers of
men ; we have heard some terrible
fulls in dying chambers. They were
the downtu mblings of a false hone
that was bottomed on the sand. When,
the floods came and the winds smote
on it, it fell, ahd great was the fall
thereof!
