It is a shame for a rich Christian to bo like a Christmas box, that receives all, and nothing can be got out till it is broken in pieces. Our literature is full of sighing and lobbing sentimentality over the un satisfying character of life. Christi anity utters an incessant rebuke to this discontent, and points the fuiling out to "glory, immortality and eter nal life" as the solution of all this pro blem. A granite monument, like that of Bunker'Ilill.tliHt will defy the storms of ages and outlast the wear and tear of centuries, cannot he made ol loose and or sun-dried brick : and a heroic Christian life, which will extort the praise of skeptics like Hume, cannot be constructed from the easy creeds out ol which tuo vital doctrines of tho Gospel have been eliminated. Dr. Johnson used to say, "He who waits to do a great deal of good at once will never do any." "Little by little" is the way in which Providence opens to us opportunities of usefulness. We may not rule a city, but w can role our own spirit. Jo found a universi ty may not be in our power, but we can give a cup of cold water in the Dame or Christ. Rowland Hill once said, when stri ving to illustrato God's love to his peo ple, "I am uriabla to reach tho lofty theme 1 -yet I do not think that the imallent fish that swims in the hound less ocean ever complains of the im measurable vastness of tho deep. So it is with me j I can plunge, with my puny capacity, into a Buhjoet, tuo im mensity of which I may never be able to fully comprehend." The brief limits imposed upon man's earthly existence, especially when con sidered in connection with his capaci ties and longings, show that the nat ural life is not only worthless, but worso than worthless for such a being, ifithasnot a benefiting destiny be yond death. The elephant, the owl, the load outlive him. J ho nnnarc ly long perspective which in childhood seemed to extend before him, is found in old ago to have been an illusion, and his years seem like a shadow which has flitted over a desert. Solomon furnishes us with an emi nently practical prescription : "What soever thy hand lintleth to do, do it with thy might. Here wo Iiavo an appeal to the individual in the crowd. or the personal in the collective Let us not dissipate our responsibility. It is by each soldier bravely doing his amy that an army conquers; it is by each bee industriounly workinir that the hive is stored with honey; it is by each insect faithfully putting forth all it might that tho coral reef becomes an island, and cities nso from the bo som of the doep. "As we have there fore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them w ho are of the household of faith." Did you ever think how every part of your house can remind you of the great truths which Jesus Christ tim't of himself? Tho corner stone says, "Christ is the Corner-stone," the door, "I am tho door;" the burning candle, "Christ is tho Ught of tho World." You look out of tho window, and the sight of the starry sky bids you tni'n yuor eyes to "the bright and Morning Star." The rising sun speaks of the "Sun of righteousness, with healing in his wings." The loaf on your table whispers of tho "bread of life," and the water which quenches your thirst, "I am the water of life." When you lie down, you think of Him who had not where to lay His head ; and when you got up you rejoice that Ho is "the resurrection and tho life." Our Mercies. Tho talents which we have received are many and great. What people breathing on earth have had plainer instructions, or more forcible persuasions, or more constant admonitions, in season and out of season? Sermons, till wo have been weary of them ; and Sabbath, till we profaned them ? Excellent books in nueh plenty that we know not which to read ? What people have had God so near them ? or have seen so much of Christ crucified before their eyes? or havo had heaven or hell so open unto them ? What speed should such a people make for heaven ? How should they fly that arc thus winged ? And bow swia would they sail that have wind and tide to help them I A small measure of grace beseems not such a people, nor will an ordinary diligence in the work of God excuse them. All our lives have been filled with mercies. God has mercifully poured out upon us the riches of'sea and land, of heaven and earth. We are fed and clothed with mercy. We have mercies within and without. To numW then, is to count the stars or the ruikIs of the seashore. If there he any difference betwixt bell and earlh yes, or heaven and earth then certainly we have re ceived mercy. If the blood of tho Son of God bo mercy, then we are engaged to God by mercy. Shall God think nothing too much nor too good for us, and shall we think all too much that we do for Him ? When 1 compare my slow and unpro fitable life with the frequent and won derful mercies received, it shames me, it .ilones me, aDd leaves me inexcus-aMs. Rate f kuWrlptlor, Adtrrllelng slid Jobbing faetrrtrtl'va, I aifrflMie, .
