Religious Miscellany. Whene'er l duty wail fur thee. With kiIkt judgment view itt Ami never idly wih it don? Hrgin at ouoc, and do iu The word of God speaks of Him not as a law, but us tlio lil'o of nil tliat is the Being who feels and is ielt, it loved and loves nirnin ; fuel my heart throb into His; counts tho hairs of my head ; hears my prayers and in terprets them through a Spirit which has affinity with my spirit. To-Morrow may never come to ns We do not live in to-morrow. We cannot find it in any of our title deeds. J The man who owns whole blocks of real estate, and prent ships on the sea, does not own a single moment of to morrow. To-monow ! It is a mys terious possibility, not yet born. It lies under the seat of midnight, be hind the veil of glistening constella tions. Chapin. God has entrusted important truth to our chargo, and has given us clear, rational, beneficent idoas and princi ples, not for our selfish enjoyment and exclusive monopoly, but for the world. We are merely trustees and almoners, and are utterly ialse to our steward ship, if we tie up in an ecclesiastical nankin the precious trcasuro which Providence intended we should dis burse and distribute until it becomes the circulating medium of the world, and all mon are enriched and ennobled by their share of it. A forcible writer says : "A believing, loving heart, purified by faith, is the medium of divine knowledge. 'The pecrct of the Lord is with them that fear him ; and ho will show them bis covenant.' It is love that brings light. 'There would bo nojight in our world were it not for the atmosphere ; and just so is it with the soul. Love in the atmosphere through which light reaches the inmost vision of the soul. Without faith working by and through love, receiving the truth in the love of it, we are mere children of sense and darkness." Love not only puts away the darkness and hindrances to spiritual sight, bnt it introduces the soul to a high and heavenly atmos phere. A Christian cannot always hear, or always read, or always communicate, but he may pray continually. No placo, no company, can deprive him of this privilege. If be be on tho top of the house with Peter, be may pray ; if ho be in the bottom of the ocean with Jonah, he may pray ; if ho be walking in the field with Isaac, he may pray when no eye seeth him j if he be waiting at the tablo with Nehe rniah, he may pray when no carhear eth him. If he be in tho mountains with our Saviour, he may pray ; if he be in the prison with Paul, lie may Eray; wherover he is, prayer will clphim to find God out. Every saint is God's temple; "and ho thatcarrieth his tcmplo about him," saith Austin, "may go to prayer when ho pleuseth." ' Indeed, to a Christian, every house is a house of prayer, every closet a cham ber of presenco, and every place he conies to an alter whereon ho may ofl'er tho sacrifice of irnyvr.-Swinnoai. Prono as our earthly spirits are to clcavo unto tho dust, what should we be if all our worldly hopes were to be realized f Wiso and kind is that sys tem of discipline under which wo ore all i 'laced ; and when, at (ho closo of hie, we come to look back on our meiitul history, we shall never be in clined to say of this affliction or that mortification "It nnirlit have been spared." We shall then see that our prayers for spirituality of mind were answered by the removal of thoso worldly joys which produced a contra ry disposition ; and that when we do sired that "our affections might be set on things above," our dearest inenus were taken there ! that so heaven might become dearer, and earth less attractive. Such weaning events must tend, not only to reconcile our minds to the shortness of life, but to make us rejoice in it. We feel that "they are light afflictions," because "they are but for a moment. Were you sinking in mid ocean would you refuse a helping hand, till you had earned it, or unless tho honor of your preservation were to bo as signed to you? Why then should you bo guilty of the folly of refusings free and full Biilvation from death, and misery, and wrath, and hell f You know full well that you did nothing to induce God to send His Son into the world, ion know that you con iriimtea not one mite of merit to Christ's obedience, not ono particle of virtue to llissacntico; you know just as well that now you can add nothing to what Christ has done, has suffered! or still docs in heaven. Surely then it is far from rational to attempt to add anything an attempt made at the risk of eternal life. Xay, if you had had the planning of redemption, could you have desired anything more suitable to you than this, that Christ should have all the work, and all the honor too, whilo you received nil tho benefit f 1 ct tins is salvation. Where, fore be constrained, he induced, he on. courpged, to take of the water of life, without money and without prico. ' Am I asleep to righteousness? Io I fail to hear her invitations ? When she knocks at my door, do I not 1Pflr f or for a moment aroused, do I quickly fall asleep again? When I arise in the morning, urn I still asleep, so far as relates to hungering ami thirsting after righteousness? When she points to some spot where temptation is wait ing for ine, and bids me avoid it do 1 gounhording to that very spot ? When I road tho Scriptures, do I remain in sensible to her thrilling accents ? When she brings some poor distressed crcaturo to my door, do 1 motion the latter angrily? When she would draw me to some haunt of miserv, do I plead a more important engagement f When she Inds me leave nntasted the meal to which I am about to sit down, that I may carry words of consolation to some ' hihi of sorrow, do I bid her wait? Oh! let me remember that, when I am not awake to ri'rhtpotm- ness, I am sinning. Sin folds mo in her pall, and the night of death has dominion over me, if 1 be not awake (o righteousness. Awake to right eousness, that righteousness may tako thee by the hand, as the angel did Jt, and lead thee to a place of safety. in, a. WAi.i.ti i, x u, mints, I. BLilt WALTER, rAKK VIKLMNQ.
