numbering nearly 1,400. The Wig

last duy, that every aisle and passage
way was filled up by persons standing,
and it was estimated by the Superin

At last 18,000 in the enclosure, one
third of whom were ladies, and we are
satisfied that their was an equal num
ber outside. The- oldest convention
goers declared it to be the greatest as

continent. The tea of human faces
Snside the building, was as orderly and
quiet during the proceedings, as' we
ever saw u crowded Church gathering,
except when the applause came in.
Major General John A. Dix, of New
York, was temporary Chairman, and
Hon J. H Doolittle, U. S. Senator
from Wisconsin, was made the perma

,,u ic nU, 1 1mt nl lior heresy that any
constitutional sunctidineiit can be im-
posed upon any Stato without giving
it the riujht to u voice in riroiiosinjr
niul n voto upon its adoption in the
appointed tnodo. This is a statement
in the narrowest compass of tlio ena-
enco of what has been effected by the
Philadelphia convention. The address
which accompanies the deciitrauon 01
principles contains an nppeal, which
no truly American bosom can rcsict,
to unite in removing the only obsta
cles which now remain to national
happiness the extirpation of the fatal
heresies we have designated, and the
expulsion from place and power of
thoso who have promulgated and up-
i held their pestilent ductrines doc
trines which are as intolerant and
despotic as they are utterly destruc
tive of that (social intercourse and that
harmony and all'ection among the
people of the States, without which
liberty is but an empty name and life
itself among the dreariest of things.
It contains ulso a noble tribute to the
manly fcutl'eraiice with which the ene
mies of the constitution have bo per
sistently heaped upon them, and a
generous vindication ol their truln
p . 4 , ,r nnn ,
Hti1Til ,KSentence-the electric response
to which by the convention is but an
anticipation of its vibration upon the
generous soul of tho people :"

The man tier in w hich all t he deliber
ations of the Philadelphia- Convention
have been conducted, the considerate
ness which the members have mani
fested, the cordiality w hich they have
shown, the wisdom and inoderation
whieh have guided their counsels, the
enthusiastic and contident eagerness
which bus waited upon their efforts,
all give the assurance that the work
of reconciliation is about completed,
that American people are again one
people, and that tho former impedi
ments which radicalism may, for a few
months longer,intcrpose to ihe orderly
movements ol every department ol
the public service, are but tho hideous
chains which intolerance tins 1 urged
to offend for a lime the public eye,and
which will be remembered with a
shudder, as we remember the rack and
the thumb-screw of a more barbarous
ago. Most heartily do we congratu
late our fellow-citizens upon tho happy
termination of the labors of the con
vention and we bail in our hearts the
triumph which a waits the united efforts
of a free people for tho integrity of
their institutions.
Tho convention, before adjourn

Union Executive Committee, of two
from each State, of which John T.
Powell, of New Jersey, is chairman.
