It was our extreme pleasure to be
present and witness the proceedings

in the Wigwam, at 1 hiladelphia, on

ed of delegates from lib' States, 9 Ter
ritories and the District of Columbia
numbering nearly 1,400. The Wig
wam Was prepared tO KCat 15,000 JKT-ioot
sons, but it became so crowded on the
last duy, that every aisle and passage
way was filled up by persons standing,
and it was estimated by the Superin
tendent that at 12 o'clcik there were
At last 18,000 in the enclosure, one
third of whom were ladies, and we are
satisfied that their was an equal num
ber outside. The- oldest convention
goers declared it to be the greatest as
eemblago ever wongregatcd on this

quiet during the proceedings, as' we
ever saw u crowded Church gathering,
except when the applause came in.
Major General John A. Dix, of New
York, was temporary Chairman, and
Hon J. H Doolittle, U. S. Senator
from Wisconsin, was made the perma
nent officer. The Delegates, like the
officers, were the best men in their

fested, the cordiality w hich they have
shown, the wisdom and inoderation
whieh have guided their counsels, the
enthusiastic and contident eagerness
which bus waited upon their efforts,
all give the assurance that the work
of reconciliation is about completed,
that American people are again one
people, and that tho former impedi
ments which radicalism may, for a few
months longer,intcrpose to ihe orderly
movements ol every department ol
the public service, are but tho hideous

which will be remembered with a
shudder, as we remember the rack and
